Re: orbit reader 20 now on sale

nope, no conversion at all. Get braille blaster or a rather mediocre script APH created called send to braille for getting English only grade 2. Other languages and so on will have to be done manually or using software. Oh, and also, tech support will not even bother to respond to anything, so don't even consider it if you plan to have good support or wish to be treated well as a quote valued customer. Aside from this, device works wonderfully.

Re: orbit reader 20 now on sale

Hi all, still about the grade 1 and grade 2 in Orbit. Suppose if you open a txt file, will it automatically convert the text into grade 2 contracted braille? This has been on my mind for some time, and something in consideration as whether or not to buy the Orbit Reader or not. I would personally prefer grade 2 braille by default, and more support for other file format which illiminate the need for conversion.

Re: orbit reader 20 now on sale

I will do that and see what happens. in the meantime, and another little interesting thing, not sure if this has happened to anyone else, but there is no explanation anywhere...It turns out that when you turn the orbit reader off and store it, if you have not used it for say, a couple of days it turns on and off randomly, like really quick I guess to refresh the cells, it does this twice very quickly, and this has startled me at night hahahahathere is actually no predefined time, it just happens very randomly and lasts for about 4 seconds or so. I have noticed this does not happen when battery is about or below 50%.Maybe this is a self-regulating thing? a temperature and weather thing...aside from this no quirks or issues at all.

Hi.I just checked, and no, there is no official spanish distributor. I just thought that because of the translation.I'll recommend you to contact Orbit Research directly and offer a better translation. The translation works a bit strange, and the translation documentation could have been much better.

Re: orbit reader 20 now on sale

I have no idea if orbit research has a spanish distributor, I bought it directly from APH when they were one. I guess I could change the files to something more coherent and then submit them, but orbit does not state where I could do that and I believe that translations are no longer open source, or that is what an update from a couple of months back made me think.

Re: orbit reader 20 now on sale

and just in time for Easter, orbit had come up with yet another upgrade to their firmware. I normally do not announce them here as its a bit irrelevant and the information can be publicly browsed, but this time it was a big surprise. I normally was just fine reading the way I was doing it, and then I upgraded just today that I had time (life does really get in the way of reading, sadly) and was delighted to find out that they now have done autoScrolling in stand-alone reading mode! (the screen reader handles this automatically when the display is connected to whatever device)yeah, for the fancy expensive displays/notetakers this is probably a no brainer, and probably laughable at best, but I took it for a spin and it went really well. The only minor downside (that I could change myself but I am lazy lol) is the really poor translation they used in the displayed Spanish messages for naming the feature. But, OK. Here is the quick review on it.When you are reading a document and press space bar to start or stop auto scrolling, you have a default time of 10 seconds per line which I found to be way too slow, but its sensible if the readers are beginners. Pressing space to start will advance the display right away, as well. I had to shorten it to about 4 dot something seconds and it still gave me time to really double check what I had read (I say this because grade 2 in Spanish is still a bit difficult for me as we normally used grade one during pretty much all of our lives but I am enjoying it a lot)so I think in terms of speed I can do pretty decently. I would really congratulate a person who could read with auto scrolling using the max speed which is every second, that would be amazing!Setting the speed is a bit counter intuitive, at least for me, because if you think in number terms, pressing space bar plus up arrow should increase the number, not decrease it, but then.. well, it would increase the speed, so there is that. I really liked that you can actually use every command that is listed in the manual for the reading mode without interrupting the braille pacer feature as they call it. Which means that if you were reading something and were not quite finished yet but the display scrolled, you can scroll it back, and then either wait for the next 4 seconds to go by to scroll again, or scroll it forward again, and the timer gets reset each time you issue a command, so its pretty flexible. As for checking the current speed besides the number you get when changing it,  you can do so from the menu too, but you cannot modify it from there, and it is better if you change it with auto scroll disabled because if you change the speed when auto scroll is on, you will not get any numbers telling you the new value. Lastly, the value is saved every time it is modified, and it should be that way until you change it again or restore the display to the defaults. So, I now will enjoy reading even more!

Yeah, you do not have to use UEB to use it. I asked at a convention a while ago.I do have a problem with UEB on a 20... well, on a braille disp... well, in general, I guess, in that it is significantly less space efficient than US grade 2 (I can't speak for UK but I think I've encountered enough to guess the same goes there). In a letter from the government, it doesn't matter. In a book, or on a device where every cell counts? It matters. ... Also UEB diacritics are hidious but back on topic bye!
