Re: messed up things in audio games?

It's just loaded, that's all. I'm not saying it's some enormous deal that totally breaks the game. Please keep my objection within its own context. What I said is that doing it this way creates precisely the sort of backlash I was upset by when I heard it on Chris's stream. He pays zero attention to Norman neglecting Sangora, and instead goes on laughing jags and drops insults on Sangora, a character who, after being left alone by her partner as a teenager, was charmed by, seduced by and ultimately slept with one person, one time, who happened to have a fatal disease he passed on to her. She made a mistake. There's no doubt about that. But the way that mistake was framed and narrated and reflected within the story is something I find a little troubling. And no, obviously not every author or content creator has the same views as every one of their characters. That's silly, I didn't say that, and again, I'd appreciate you folks sticking to facts. I'm talking about something that has more to do with simply professing points of view. I'm talking about language. I'm talking about the choice to have one thing highlighted without the other. For instance, does anyone, Norman or Sangora or anyone else, ever suggest that Dragomier's errant Draco Breaker is his just reward for abandoning his love? That if Norman hadn't abandoned Sangora the way he did, to go on his journey, neither he nor Sangora would've died? Because trace this back for a sec. Norman doesn't leave. Sangora has no reason to be unfaithful, so she doesn't contract a deadly disease. Norman is not on his manamon journey, and is not killed. By that logic, Norman's choice set others into motion, including his own death. Even the main character may have culpability, and I believe this is touched on. But these angles are far quieter than the "Sangora was unfaithful so she caught a disease" angle. Need I remind you that the dude who gave Sangora her fatal disease...really isn't even touched on much. There's not a lot of anger toward him, no desire to track him down (assuming he's not already dead, of course). There's no discussion of how it was his lack of safety and his transmission of a disease he already had that was a large part of the issue. If Sangora had been seduced by someone safe, someone who had no disease, then suddenly she's not dying. So say what you want about Sangora and the bad choice she made, but I personally think that someone who knowingly has sex with someone while infected with a fatal disease, -without telling that person, is way, way, way worse. Yet, again, not touched on.There is a large message buried in this. The trope that women sleep around, the trope that those who sleep around (especially women, but not just women, obviously) get sick from doing it when statistically speaking this is actually not nearly as likely as it's being made out to be. I mean, the sheer odds of Sangora getting fatally ill from her one single trist are staggering. Also, the ignoring of the fact that the man Sangora slept with was sick, didn't inform her. Nope. We're so dead focused on Sangora's impropriety that pretty much everything else gets forgotten. I find that extremely telling. So in a big-picture sense, it raises a whole lot of questions. And the way that some players responded to the story proves my point more eloquently than I ever could.Put another way, folks, this isn't some huge hill I want to die on. I have some pretty heavy questions and such, and I'm not super happy about the way this was portrayed. I think it takes a defter touch than Aaron has in order to approach this subject matter in a way that maximizes realistic emotional impact while minimizing the potential for the silliness I saw on that stream. But I don't think it ruins the game, or the characters, and I absolutely do not believe that you have to write character with only your own worldview. In the novel I'm writing, I have plenty of characters who don't agree with me, and some of them say and do some pretty ugly things. But as a writer, I feel it is on me to very carefully manage the message that gets to my audience, and I think that's true everywhere, not just with me. But, yet again, this is bothersome, but not an enormous deal. Please do not take my issues out of context and start talking about Hitler and Tolkien trying to rule the world or whatnot. It proves that you're missing the point.

And writing a character that does it is not a sign of anything but a character being written to have certain beliefs.

There have been rumors that Hitler's grandfather on mother's side was a jew but most historians seem to dismiss this as not prooveable hypotheses. This feels like potential dangerous misinformation to me because it is myth-building. Myths lead to oversimplification, oversimplification leads to belittlement. Hitler didn't need the back story of a over the top evil fantasy villain to become probably the most ruthless leader of all time.In times like this where radicalisation is starting to become socially acceptable again it is more important than ever to understand that true real life evil has no red glowing eyes and speaks parseltongue. This Hitler-Voldemort comparison is for me true to the topic a little messed up.Sorry for this rant but as a german maybe I react especially allergic to Hitler mentionings. Also on-topic:Postal 2 anyone? Have to agree with Simba and Dan_Gero. You take this far, far too seriously. We would have to rewrite half of the worlds literature if we started to say the author has an uncomon opinion based of a line a character says. I mean, Tolkien didn't want to rule the world either, and yet he wrote the character of Sauron. It's also quite troubling for me to see how often a person is said to have a misogenistic view these days. You basically can't write or say anything today without being afraid you step on somebodys toes.

Hi.At 41 dude, it's a game, no reason to get your thong in a knot and assume that the streamer and or the author of a game think that what the girl was doing was right or wrong, a good author can portray a great deal of characters with their own personalitys, viewpoints and behaviour. Yes, you will see the authors viewpoints coming through in one or more characters, but to outright go and assume or wondering if an author has the same views as one of the characters is just not acceptable in my opinion.Greetings Moritz.

Re: messed up things in audio games?

I wouldn't be to upset with the streamer. At the end of the day, he's playing the game because he wants to enjoy it. From an outsider looking in because I've never played all the way through Manamon 2, what I personally gathered from the general conversation on this thread is that Sangora has been sleeping around with other guys after claiming she'd remain faithful to Norman, and she contracted a disease and died because of her foolish actions. You would be surprised how many teens sleep around with other teens. Maybe they didn't contract a fatal disease, but my point still stands. I don't see the issue with this plot point, and thus I don't see a problem with the streamer having no comments on it. At the end of the day, streamers play games to entertain themselves and the people watching, not to get into debates on whether or not a game's story has Misogynistic views. As such, I don't see why anyone should have a problem with any of this.

Unfortunately, Trajectory, what I'm saying is that when this is projected using the voice of that character, it may not be part of the actual narrative but it is absolutely part of the experience an end user will glean from it. It feels a little clunky and forced, and it gives people an excuse to latch onto it, go "Hey, see, right there! She friggin' said it herself!". It validates cultural misogyny, even if it is a thing Sangora might well have thought and might have articulated. You, and by extension Aaron, made the choice to include this line, and so the ramifications lie with you. Now, is it an enormous deal? Not really. And I'd agree that the blame is roughly 50-50. But it's still a thing that happened and something which made me cring when I read it. First thought was like "aww, dude, don't feed the beast."

Re: messed up things in audio games?

@Jayde, where exactly does Aaron himself state that the disease is Sangora's punishment for her actions? Sangora does make a statement to this effect, but it is certainly not stated as some kind of narrative.I gave Aaron an outline of the story which he molded to fit within the context of his game. The line you are referring to comes directly from me. I stated that Sangora believes her disease to be "justified karmic punishment for her actions". It is simply the individual character's views on her own situation, not the views of the main character or anybody outside the fourth wall.My own world views would divide the blame roughly 50/50, were both of the characters adults. Since they aren't, then I would blame the fact that neither one was mature enough to chew what either of them had bitten off. Perhaps on a subconscious level, part of these characters and their attitudes stem from my own tendency to look back on mistakes I made as a child and let my own conscience put me on trial for them as an adult.

Re: messed up things in audio games?

Also? I've now listened to the stream in question, Trajectory. Thanks for pointing me at it.Needless to say I won't be listening to any more of it. I haven't been that angry in awhile.Because no. Again, cheating is not a good thing to do. But the sheer misogyny in that stream makes my blood boil.I didn't hear a single comment about how Norman basically ran off on Sangora, or how, when faced with a tough situation, she even sold off her manamon because she wanted to try to see Norman one more time, to cheer him on or whatnot. It's not really cool that she was unfaithful. eing unfaithful is generally something one doesn't do in a monogamous relationship. But just fucking off and leaving your partner alone, especially when you're both young, isn't something you should do either, and I find it pretty telling that this wasn't even commented on.Again, it was executed clumsily, which adds to the issue. On one hand I can hardly blame those in the stream for acting as they did, because Aaron even had Sangora state that maybe this was her punishment, and all that. Makes me wonder if Aaron holds these misogynistic views as well, and whether or not he would've written it the same way if it was a dude who'd been unfaithful. Hell, if it had been a dude in Sangora's place. I wonder if he'd even have -thought to make him unfaithful at all, or are we playing with the "loose woman" stereotype here?Just a cauldron of gross, IMO.

Eshcon's identity was actually kind of neat, and redeemed him a little bit.I still say that the Sangora plot line would have been even better if it had been written better. i.e., the frame of the story is decent, and got me interested, but the words used and the way it was all constructed lent itself to problems.Shades of Doom: great huge installation, and only two toilets, one on floor 2 and one on floor 5.By contrast: no toilets in Kiarre itself, yet there are five or six in Requia Castle alone.

As for the Sangora thing they were both at fault. I know Liam didn't think much of that subplot either. He was more impressed with the revelation of Eshkin's true identity. I certainly wouldn't have guessed that, though in retrospect I suppose there were hints.

Jayde wrote:Where exactly do you get the notion that the court of public opinion holds Sangora responsible? There are a few sources for this statement. One prominent one being Chris's live stream and accompanying chat. Others being semi private conversations through the manamon trading Skype group. Others being various individuals including sighted people who were asked for their opinions after having listened to me play through the story. I obviously can't prove some of these sources, but there is Chris's live stream which is available for public viewing.Jayde wrote:As such, it almost feels as if the game's own narrative is suggesting that Sangora deserved and received more punishment for what happened.Perhaps she didn't deserve more punishment than Norman, but perhaps she did receive it. Or perhaps Norman's accident was fate's crewel way of punishing him for his own roll. After all, Sangora would have died anyway. Not so for Norman, who might have gone on to live a full life had the accident not have happened. Then there's Andromeda, which I had nothing to do with. Bad shit happens to good people, and the road to hell is paved with good intentions.Jayde wrote:I would love to be a fly on the wall if someone were to write a similar story, reverse or muddy the genders, and have the man get sick, or the one who went away on their journey get ill while the one left behind did not. I dunno. So would I. I hypothesize that the people who currently blame the woman for cheating would switch to blaming the woman for putting her own desires over the man's needs, but maybe I'm being too cynical.I was also trying to bring the quality VS quantity of life question to light. Mercilla, being a doctor, would probably never have agreed to bring Sangora to the game (or bring the game to her). By not doing so, she might have been able to prolong Sangora's life by a small amount. The main character, on the other hand, makes the opposite choice. Sure, nobody expected the accident, but even in its absence there is still the question of whether or not to move someone in her condition and allow them to exert that level of energy and/or emotion. So again, who is right and who is wrong?

Re: messed up things in audio games?

For the record, I actually see Norman as having had more blame than Sangora, albeit not by much.Teenagers are ill-equipped to make life choices, if only for the fact that their brains are still quite literally not done development. Mistakes and impulsive behaviour, to some degree at least, should be expected. No, Sangora should not have been unfaithful if she had agreed that she would be. That's wrong regardless of gender. But in the same breath, Norman decided that running off to tame magical creatures mattered more than keeping his love alive. He decided to be selfish. And this isn't altogether a bad thing, but were I Sangora, or in a place like hers, I might have been tempted to say something like, "look, you do you, but depending on how long you're gone, I may not wait forever. I'm young, things can happen. I have no plan to be unfaithful, but I don't think it's fair for me to just hang on the hook you're leaving me either". So I think they both screwed up in different ways.Where exactly do you get the notion that the court of public opinion holds Sangora responsible?Because the bit I actually find more troubling is not public opinion, but the story itself. Sangora is unfaithful, and as a result she contracts a fatal disease. Yes, this can happen, but it's not super common. Norman, on the other hand, is alive and well until Ruben's Dragomier goes nuts, seems to have suffered no ill effects. As such, it almost feels as if the game's own narrative is suggesting that Sangora deserved and received more punishment for what happened.I would love to be a fly on the wall if someone were to write a similar story, reverse or muddy the genders, and have the man get sick, or the one who went away on their journey get ill while the one left behind did not. Re: messed up things in audio games?

Can we talk about Sangora? Before I go into this, I should reiterate that I'm the one who wrote that subplot (or at least the outline for it).I've been quietly observing reactions to it, which has been fascinating. There's been everything from admissions of having cried to indifference to mockery, which is of course to be expected (everybody takes their cup of tea a little differently). But one common theme stands out which I think deserves mentioning.Sangora and Norman are teenagers in love. Norman decides to leave Sangora for a period of time anywhere from months to years in order to pursue a manamon taming career, all the while expecting Sangora to wait for him. Sangora promises to wait for him, but fails to do so and pays the worst possible price for it.It fascinates me that in the court of public opinion, Sangora receives 100 percent of the blame while Norman seems to get a free pass. Perhaps this is anecdotal evidence that some level of misogyny (at least subconsciously) is still alive and well in modern day society.Would I be correct to suspect that were I able to go back in time and rework that story to reverse rolls, that Sangora would still be held to account (for abandoning Norman), and Norman would get a free pass for not remaining celibate? We'll never know.I obviously have way too much bias to be able to make this statement, but I would like to believe that if I had come across this story without having written it (and thus could see it objectively), I would still see the blame as being roughly 50/50 between the two of them. And I'm a man.

There are just scenarios in Aaron's games that don't quite work for one reason or another. When I see it, I just see a scenario where the author seems to have forgotten what he was doing, or wasn't quite sure of what to do, or was uncertain about how to do it. And then I realize I should probably just hand-wave it and play the game and ignore the story.

Re: messed up things in audio games?

I have an issue with the flirting thing because, well, the game makes a point of not being anything beyond maybe PG, and then throws in...that. In some places, that sort of thing would be pretty freaking illegal.NPCs standing in place is something that tons of RPGs do. Check out virtually any Final Fantasy game, and shops are always open, people are always standing or sitting or sleeping in the same place no matter when you show up. Manamon tries to get around this by simulating movement (some tamers move, some cutscenes let you listen to excruciatingly slow walking steps).Either way, though, it's a quirk of games in general. NPCs just wait on you...forever.

Re: messed up things in audio games?

Here's a mechanically related one, this is one to not take too seriously but I still find it funny when I think about it.How come, in top speed 3, when you move in a direction, the car goes to the side, and I mean the entire engine, and sometimes quickly. If you let go, it stays there. Wouldn't that mean that the car is technically strafing, rather than turning? This would mean that the cars are racing by literally sliding around the tracks. Yer if you crash at full speed you stop, rather than slow right down. Meaning that hitting the side of something with the car would fracture the entire side of the vehicle rather than a head on crash. Saying that, though, the glass would then go through the side. Yet here's the thing. The vehicle's engine just starts again and you can continue racing. Thing is, you hear the car change it's position, and logically you could say there's a camera in the center of the track, so, how come when you crash the sound is in the center even though you crashed on the left or right?

Re: messed up things in audio games?

Personally I didn't mind the disturbing lady in manamon, I mean, they're an evil organisation who want to blow up the world for some reason, they're not exactly going to be paragons of virtue. what did sort of bother me a bit more in Manamon from a moral perspective was the hole business with your father getting tortured, and you actually having options to "not forgive your father," not to mention yavin just basically saying, "Yes, I knew your father was just sitting around in Eternal agony, , sorry about that."On a less grim note, one thing I find really messed up in both Manamon and paladin of the sky, is the way everybody! and I mean everybody, just basically stand there for the entire game, unless they have to move to let you go somewhere else, or unless they're those annoying guards trying to catch you. I mean, just to take a random example, there is the guy in Wondrous valley who constantly complains about being thirsty, yet just stands there! My new theory, is that actually the war between the dragons and humans at the start of paladin of the sky resulted in the complete destruction of humanity, with the last few humans being reduced to the level of brains in jars, stuck on a spaceship going out into space. ross is actually the ship's robotically operated security system and thus he, and his fellow robots are actually the only  able to move in that game. In Manamon, the timeline has progressed, and the original brains are now planted all over the alien planety they colonised, and have used their telepathic powers to enslave the local fauna to do their will. this is the true purpose of a Manamon Journey, since only by having their brain jar carried by either  Leafox, Aquaffe or similar creature, can the once humans get any sort of mobility around their planet, however given the low breeding rates among those starters, once the human brain matures beyond the adolescent stage, it has to relinquish it's animal assistance and  planted in a house somewhere. this is also why nobody in any of  worlds needs to eat, but why the droubt in manamon 2 is such a serious matter, since without water, the preservation fluid for the brains in jars is likely to dry up. See! it all makes perfect sense .

I'd bet that not many of his Death Eaters knew the truth about his ancestry. Re: messed up things in audio games?

Psyco strike's menu system is messed up. Want to go to the bar? You choose it from the menu, done you're teleported there. At least some kind of walking on the street filled with people should have been made. The game had a lot of potential due to it's theme but it has been ruined.

What confuses me is why P air is so dead set on killing off all the dragon halflings, when he’s a halfling himself. Evidence of this can be seen in the final boss battle, when he attempts to cast toxic ball.

@Dragomier, that is why it is called crazy party, because you are crzy! .@Eliza, I wouldn't say games depicting hating someone for being different is something wrong with the game, it's just the way people work. Unfortunately, Paladin of the sky isn't really a great example of that, mostly because the hole dragon halfling business got somewhat dropped, and the idea of humans who are just human vs all these half magical dragons with awesome abilities seems a bit bonkers anyway, (it's pretty clear who'd come out ontop in a war).

Here's what I'm confused about. How come in Crazy Party, you just keep putting yourself in these situations that will get you eaten by freakishly large ants, murdered by scissors, or bombed from above? And why do you like doing it so much?

Re: messed up things in audio games?

Lol I'm  with Jayde on this one. Old Nick (and not the Saintly one), has had quite a distinguished video game career, mostly getting smacked around by the Hero one way or another. I was especially amused by this in suepr Castlevania, where apparently the devil and the grim  reaper are both Dracula's minions, what a come down .Okay here's a few things I've noticed. Alien outback, anyone ever wondered why apparently busher Bob's shotgun from the boot of his car is powerful enough to take out an alien ship with two hits? especially a ship which (if your life meater in the game is to be believed), can take a lot of lasers. As well as the right angles,  Who the heck in shades of doom ever thought that having an experiment which takes four different wafers to shut down was a good idea? I mean I can see it now: "Shall I add a cutoff switch to the device so we can shut this down if it goes wrong?" "nah, I'm sure we'll have time to insert several plastic wafers into small slots in a randomised order before anything bad happens."In Manamon I personally just thought  woman who talked about the character's good looks despite his age was being disturbing in the anime fashion. Apart from the mention of Satan though, what did slightly confuse me is where the heck was Matthew throughout the game? He says he's going off on his own journey to collect stadium keys, yet we don't see him at all until he's already defeated the master, indeed what happened to the previous master anyway? Then again, manamon's plot is a bit bonkers in some ways, I'm hoping two will have a better general story.

Re: messed up things in audio games?

Well, the ones I pointed out could have something to do with the way I was raised. I spent a good chunk of my life in church. Also, is it just me, or is the hatred of the halflings in Paladin very very similar to what we deal with already? There's something fundamentally wrong with hating someone for being different. That isn't just in a game. That's everywhere. Jade, you have spent quite a lot of time with the stories in these games. Here is a place to share all of your frustrations with things like this.

Re: messed up things in audio games?

iI haven't seen any culturally wonky things in the manner you're describing. Fight the devil? Fight St. Peter because he's challenging you, determining how worthy you are? All sounds right on board with Christian theology, really.I can think of some general oddities, but they're not cultural, most of them.1. In manamon 2, when the character realizes that no one in Mamia has a phone, he is almost shockingly rude about the whole thing. I mean, some guy just randomly rescued him, and he's all, "Oh, you guys don't have a phone? I'll be going then. Nah, I don't want to stay and enjoy your hospitality. Just...bye." Extremely rude.2. On a more mechanical level, almost every room in Shades of Doom is made up purely of right angles, and does not appear to be complex (i.e., squares and rectangles predominate).3. Paladin of the sky deals with a ship that has a druggie hideout, a whole palace for a dude named Burt, a drug factory, a hidden floor, an enormous unused storage room full of ghosts, and plenty of other weird and wonderful places. How does all this exist on one ship? I'm just picturing some security guy going, "Right. Okay, did you check the druggie hideaway for stowaways, Bill? We had problems with it on the last flight."4. In manamon 1, your character is twelve or so, and yet one of the people in the Manalith Factory says something like, "Your good looks were distracting me". Uh...what?

Re: messed up things in audio games?

I think Hadies/the devil appearing in games/tv/video games is more of a trope than anything else, so it's probably not meant to be taken as seriously.Speaking of the devil, not that I took offense to this, but did you notice in Manamon 1 that Octoross mentions Satan? And it came out of nowhere, not quite breaking the forth wall though as is other tamers, like trying to find text to speech voices online. ol!

messed up things in audio games?

Ok, so I know we've all seen this, something in a game that just isn't quite right in our culture, something we consider messed up. What are some things you guys have seen? I'm not writing this to make anyone angry or criticize anyone. It's just something I notice. Also, a spoiler alert is in effect for this entire thread. Here is my list. First, the gate. I was all set to buy a copy until I saw someone play through the final fight. Your final boss is the devil! How is that ok? Second, Paladin of the Sky. Overall, I like this game, but a couple of things stick out to me. One of the bosses during the game is Saint Peter. You also have to fight God Killers and other things that just kind of bother me deep down. It isn't enough to make me hate the game, not by a long shot, but that is just kind of wrong. If you guys have seen anything like this, please share. Video games are ok too, for those who play them.
