@datajake1999:It's SpeechFX, formerly Fonix. That's all we need to know to find that this is anything but 4.3. It's my understanding that Force Computers likely dumped it when they upgraded the thing to 4.6.1, because they *they* thought it sounde d better when in reality it doesn't.

Re: rant about insanely high prices!

Another thing to think about is if this is really DECtalk 4.3, or if it is just marketing telling us something that is too good to be true. If they have newer versions such as DECtalk 5.0, why on earth would they sell an older version? This doesn't make any sense.Furthermore, we haven't heard any audio samples of this "DECtalk 4.3", so I wouldn't get all excited about something that most likely is too good to be true.

Some people may prefer Vocalizer. I personally do not prefer it unless it's with the nathan or Malcum voices, or any of the SVox offshoots (though I have always preferred their originals to be honest).

I also have two keys for sapi5 eloquence that I purchased. they both work fine and codeFactory sapi5 eloquence works fine. But its $60 or so price is a reasonable price. And vocalizer sapi5 for $115 is good also. But really, why should I buy vocalizer voices when the windows 10 OneCore voices with the latest NVDA give me the same thing? My sapi5 codeFactory eloquence works fine for audio games. But if I want to play with languages like Japanese, why spend the $115 on codeFactory vocalizer when I can with the latest Windows version: Windows 10Ver1903 (32-bit) build 18362.239  on my RCA cambio tablet I can just go in and add a japanese windows oneCore voice for free. I also found that vocalizer likes to garble unusual words whereas eloquence and dectalk and espeak just pronounce them perfectly fine, no garbling mushy sound of spliced together human recordings. hey if someone wanted to make some money on here. Maybe take the decTalk voice from one of the good decTalk NVDA addons and write a sapi5 interface for it, sell it for $5 or $10 or so? It would get you some income because I would buy a copy of a good sapi5 decTalk for playing games and stuff. This RCA 2-in-1 tablet with touch screen with its intel atom z8350 processor and 2gigs ram and 32bit windows10 is ok, but I really can't wait to save up the money in my able disability savings account and then buy an asus tough gaming laptop with 8gigs ram, 4gigs graphics card that is its own dedicated graphics card, 64bit windows10 with at least a 512gb ssd. This $110 tablet I just got it because one of me and my son's laptops died and I needed a windows machine and was on a tight budget at the time. So after I get the braille me display from atguys.com and when christmas is over with and I replace my son's krappy laptop with a good one for high school, then its my turn to save money and get me a good gaming laptop with some high specs... That won't be until the beginning of the year 2020 when I have that money saved up though. But really, why buy vocalizer, I have jaws and somehow I ended up with 5 SMA's. and with jaws you get vocalizer for free anyway. Sometimes I load up jaws because sometimes it can do stuff that NVDA cannot such as reading the decTalk speak windows a bit better.

Re: rant about insanely high prices!

Back when Digital was carrying Dectalk, a Dectalk 4.3 software development kit, which is what screen reader manufacturers would have obtained, sold for $500 for a copy with 4 concurrent licenses for 4 speech objects, that would be 4 applications. In addition to Dectalk's api, you also had access to MS Sapi, though in the earlier days it could have been sapi3. That was a very fair price at the time, and probably still would be now if Force Computers and Speech FX didn't screw with the sound so damn much, that's where charging thousands for it is absolutely absurd.

When I saw the topic name, my first thought was, "Oh boy, is he gonna be talking about the national NFB convention?" as for the price point for Dectalk, I have to agree that it shouldn't exist, for 1 reason. You're not gonna find a dectalk speak window or an NVDA addon anywhere that costs anymore than free, so why should they charge for this? Not to mention the price is absolutely obserd. Either charge for everything, or charge for none of it.

Plus, I would pay good money for a true Dectalk sdk/source if it were preserved at the time of 4.2/4.3. It is in my opinion one of the best synths around, and the only synth that really has the on-purpose capability to sing, other than the dedicated singing synths such as Vocal Writer.

Live with the factthat we have currency, trade, etc., and that currency, in any of its innumerable forms, exists, and that there is always a price for something. well, if you google search "free decTalk", you can get the same stuff that he wants $9000.00 for, you can get it for free. and it works just fine on windows 10! DecTalk also works good with the NVDA addons which are free. Are they legal? who knows really... And yes if you want to make decTalk sing and make tones, the speak-windows, basically notepad with built-in decTalk work just fine in windows 10 as well.

Re: rant about insanely high prices!

What's even worse than the current broken copyright system and the clear lack of oversight on tts acquisition (especially of old synths) is this even still compatible/potentially usable with modern hardware? As in, could anyone so much as hope to get a proof of concept from them that this has the source and isn't just the dectalk api that interacts with the closed dectalk 4.3 dll. Also, I can confirm that Speech FX, formerly Fonix Corporation, is not using anything Dectalk 4.3 related. They have their own spinoff that is used in Mobile Speak, the Orion TI84+, and other things. You can safely write them off. Now to go see if my Dectalk Express chipset rom could be potentially dumped. I have a firmware diskette, and would love to think it could be doable without opening the unit, but who knows at this point. If dectalk 2.0 could be emulated in Mame then I'm half convinced the Dectalk Express can be as well. Dectalk 4.2 was the best version of Dectalk around.

Re: rant about insanely high prices!

The proprietary nature of these kinds of things usually causes fist fights. The short answer is what @2 said. When you are the only one that specializes in or maintains access to something, you hold the ability to charge whatever price you wish to in order for others to be granted access. Is it right? That's for everyone to decide on their own. It is precisely the concept of competition that keeps prices down, and why monopolies are illegal; however, there isn't stopping anybody from specializing in synthetic speech. As much as we'd like for these things to be more accessible in the sense it's more affordable, we have no choice because there's only one top dog that specializes in the product they offer (in this case, DecTalk, not synthetic voices generally speaking). I'll reserve my opinions but thought I'd offer at least reasoning behind it.

How can they justify such high prices? especially when some anonymous people put up decTalk stuff for free? I bet even ESpeak is loosely-based on decTalk code and stuff.
