Just my luck, the Alpha came yeterday but the transformer broke during shipping. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: SB-3 and external DAC
cliveb Wrote: It's refreshing to see a little bit of sanity creeping in over this issue. Up til now there seems to have been an almost dogmatic assumption by many that an external high-end DAC is mandatory for audiophile quality. But my experience is that the SB2 analogue output sounds absolutely bloody marvelous. And I'm not running any kind of micky-mouse system: the SB2 is directly feeding a pair of ATC SCM100A active monitors. They've never sounded so good. Imo the SB2 is good but in no way compares to my Cal Audio Lab redbook cd player. Prehaps the some of the biggest improvement gains by using an external DAC is going to be the replacement of the internal op amp with a high quality amplifier. I input into a Classe CP60 analogue preamp instead of running into my Anthem AVM20 pre/pro. The Anthem like most processors is going to convert it back to digital for processing. -- Kenr Kenr's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1134 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=17948 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Will an outboard dac be an improvment over my Anthem AVM20
I just bought a California Audio Labs Alpha Dac. I figured I liked my CAL Aria so much that the Alpha might be the way to go, if not I can resell it for my cost. I also bought a Elpac PS at present I can't tell the difference but I haven't tried to critically compare. -- Kenr Kenr's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1134 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=17286 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

PhilNYC Wrote: I bought one by Elpac (5v, 1.5amp) off an electronics surplus website. Unfortunately, it appears they are out of stock on the one I bought. I'll dig around and see if I can come up with another one...there's a lot of discussion about what people are finding on audiocircle.com. I ordered the Elpac and it came yesterday. I will let you know how it works out, now waiting for my SB3. -- Kenr ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

mkozlows Wrote: The CAL has tubes, right? If so, then it's clearly worse (in the measurable fidelity sense) than both the Anthem and the SB2; but if you like the tube thing, then get a tube DAC. Yes the CAL is tubed. Some of the best electronics are tubed and they are usually preferred for guitar amps. -- Kenr ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Unit mods or external dac?
PhilNYC Wrote: Two things to consider about mods; first, it voids your warranty, and second, often times selling a modded unit is harder than selling stock. That said, modding can definitely give you some great results...despite the great transport performance of the SB2, my reference transport is still a heavily modded ($1300) Sony S7700 dvd player. The important thing, as is always the case in audio, is to see if you can audition it before committing to the modded unit. I disagree. The resale price of a SB2 can't be all that much. I would be willing to pay more for a redwine or a bolder modded sb. -- Kenr ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

PhilNYC Wrote: What are you hearing that the CAL player is doing better than the SB2? I just replaced the stock power supply with a relatively inexpensive linear power supply (for $20), and I found very good improvement in the sound (I'm using my SB2 via digital out to an outboard DAC). Prior to the upgrade, I found a little bit of sibilance in the sound, especially on female vocals. With the power supply upgrade, the sibilance is completely gone... To me the SB2 is a litlle coarse sounding in the upper ranges, maybe sibilance is a good way to describe it. One the other hand the CAL gives silky presentation and is very involving. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Will an outboard dac be an improvment over my Anthem AVM20
I have my SB2 hooked up into the coax digital input in my AVM20. The sound is fine but not nearly as good as my CAL Aria CD player. I was wondering if I would hear any improvement if I switch to an outboard dac. I like the sound of tubes so I have been thinking of buying a Scott Nixon dac. What do you think?
