I don't have a problem with the praying, but a professional pilot panicing is a bit worrying. timmo you know what i hate timmo errors that wont go away Guilty So you dislike children too 2009/3/25 DMcD slutsw...@gmail.com An Italian court has jailed a Tunisian pilot who paused to pray instead of taking emergency measures before ditching his plane, killing 16 people. A fuel gauge fault was partly to blame for the crash off Sicily in 2005 but judges convicted Chafik Garbi of manslaughter, jailing him for 10 years. Prosecutors say that after both the plane's engines cut out, the pilot succumbed to panic, praying out loud instead of following emergency procedures and then opting to crash-land in the Mediterranean instead of trying to reach the nearest airport or performing a controlled water landing like that other clever bugger in the US. ___ Aus-soaring mailing list Aus-soaring@lists.internode.on.net To check or change subscription details, visit: http://lists.internode.on.net/mailman/listinfo/aus-soaring ___ Aus-soaring mailing list Aus-soaring@lists.internode.on.net To check or change subscription details, visit: http://lists.internode.on.net/mailman/listinfo/aus-soaring
Re: [Aus-soaring] The power of prayer?
Not so long ago a professional pilot flying a light twin was reported to have frozen at the controls The story goes that he ran the tanks he was using dry but still had fuel in another two tanks. instead of changing tanks he froze and was luck to survive the crash landing Fortunately he was by himself and I suspect he has now chosen a different career path. Re: [Aus-soaring] New aerodynamics idea
Don't think alltogether new. Have a look at http://www.hammertek.com/case-study-grain-miller.asp . Totally different application but surprisingly similar pictures and claims about vortex application. These things work but we found that a simple dead end works almost as well. I would take any report from the media with a grain of salt. Sounds like a bit of a racist beat up. How many of you would mutter some oath when things are going wrong? All 366 pages? Yup! ;-) Why let the facts get in the way of a good story? Much of the report comprises appendices (these in themselves are interesting). The conclusion starts at page 193 and goes for about 10 or so pages. ___ Aus-soaring mailing list Aus-soaring@lists.internode.on.net To check or change subscription details, visit: http://lists.internode.on.net/mailman/listinfo/aus-soaring
Re: [Aus-soaring] The power of the media, was RE: The power of prayer?
Well said! I detest the way in which the media presents lies as fact - they have no intention of telling the truth, only entertainment for those who enjoy that sort of thing. Did anyone else notice the news report last year, where the newsreader said it was a "glider crash", and the picture behind him showed the burned wreckage of a twin... Then when they cut to the newsreel, the reporter said it was an "ultralight" crash! IF they used a photo of the actual accident which they claimed to be reporting, then it was clearly a GA twin and could not have been a glider or ultralight! Where is the accountability? Kym. That a commercial pilot should believe that praying was a better option than trying to work out a solution to the problem. 2. As Richard Dawkins said, if praying actually worked, the religion industry would be making a pretty big fuss about the results. In the largest scientific test of its kind, heart surgery patients showed no benefit when strangers prayed for their recovery. And patients who knew they were being prayed for had a slightly higher rate of complications. So as a paying passenger on a plane which was about to auger in, I would rather the pilot was an atheist :-) ___ Aus-soaring mailing list Aus-soaring@lists.internode.on.net To check or change subscription details, visit: http://lists.internode.on.net/mailman/listinfo/aus-soaring
[Aus-soaring] GFA Board Term of Office
There are quite a number of current Board members who are approaching that limit. Can you list who the members are off list is ok m...@mals.net Who is proposing the change ? This came up 12 years ago. http://www.gfa.org.au/Docs/minutes/agm1997.pdf ACM 12.2 MOTIONS FROM THE EXECUTIVE ACM 12.2.1 MOTION 1 (Page 81 Second Round Papers) That the following clause be added to the Council Regulations under the heading Executive - The tenure of the office-bearers of the Council in accordance with Article 17(a) (ii) and 42(a) shall not exceed five (5) years except in the case of the Immediate Past President whose term shall be limited to one (I) year, this being the first year of the succeeding President's term, and in the case of the Executive Vice-President whose term shall, in the normal course, be limited to one (I) year this being the last year of the existing President's term or otherwise as Council may determine. The Council may extend the period which an Executive member normally subject to a five (5) year limit may hold office by two (2) years, to a total of seven (7) consecutive years where exceptional circumstances are seen to exist. Any such vote shall require a majority of a least 75% of the members of Council to be passed. The changes to the Articles of Association adopted at the Annual General Meeting gave to Council the power to set the term of office for GFA officer-bearers. After deliberating the above motion it was the consensus of Council that the Executive motion be withdrawn, leaving those positions relative to Executive office-bearers subject to annual election. However it was considered appropriate that limitations be placed on the term of office of the President and the Immediate Past President. ___ Aus-soaring mailing list Aus-soaring@lists.internode.on.net To check or change subscription details, visit: http://lists.internode.on.net/mailman/listinfo/aus-soaring
