Hello Pam,

Give Al Sim (of GoSoaring), a JoeyGlide sponsor a call on: 07 5499 4636

He knows the MH O2 system very well, plus a local to us in SEQ for refilling
with ease.

Hi Pam,
Most US bottles will not fit in Schleicher holder. Either a smaller bottle with
packing or get a German steel bottle [which will fit, and gives max capacity]
and use German DIN44 fittings. An alternative, which both our gliders have is
the German bottle with a DIN44 to American std CGA[64?] adapter
to use the std US regulator from MH. The adapters are on the MH website, you
can then use this adapter for filling. The extra money for the reg with gauge
is worth it as the MH bottles have gauge on bottle side of tap but German
bottle does not. The US is the aviation standard here.
With a refilling kit you can hire a big bottle and refill your own bottles.
Talk to Maddog as`well.

Regards,
Tom

FYI there is a chamber in NZ run by the RNZAF. They welcome glider pilots to
use it (helps pay for upkeep!). I went on a hypoxia course organised for
Gliding NZ last year, well worth it. Perhaps a bunch of GFA members could get
together and pop on over the ditch. Let me know if you need contact details.

Re: [Aus-soaring] Oxygen systems

2012-07-09 Thread eckey

Hi Pam

Please allow me to clarify the matter.

Depending on customer requirements Schleicher installs bottles holders
to suit either European or US made oxygen
bottles. European oxy bottles are 100 mm whereby US bottles are
usually 108 mm in diameter.
If your fittings are for European bottles you will not be able to fit
the larger diameter US bottles.

If you let me know which size bottle you require I will ask Schleicher
to submit a quote directly to you. On request the
bottle can soon be shipped to Melbourne in a container with two
gliders for Victorian customers. This can reduce the
shipping costs for you. Please note that the ex-works delivery date of
these gliders is the second half of August.

Please let me have your thoughts on the matter.

Kind regards

Bernard

[Aus-soaring] CADO versus Hypobaric hypoxia

2012-07-09 Thread Texler, Michael
One paper (see below) concludes that Combined Altitude Depleted Oxygen
(CADO) is just as effective a tool for hypoxia awareness training as
hypobaric hypoxia.
It could be said that an explosive decompression is not a usual scenario
for glider pilots at altitude (unless you are in a pressurised cockpit
for extreme altitude flights), hence a gradual 'physiological ascent' by
turning down the oxygen ratio will simulate the insidious nature of
hypoxia during an ascent more realistically.

Decompression chambers have been associated with occurrences of the
bends, I know of one person who had the bends following a chamber run.

Any comment from AvMed types?

Re: [Aus-soaring] CADO versus Hypobaric hypoxia

2012-07-09 Thread Texler, Michael
But then again, there is this presentation that say there are
differences between normobaric hypoxia (i.e breathing oxygen poor
mixtures at sea level pressure), CADO (in a chamber at 10,000' altitude
breathing an oxygen poor mixture) and hypobaric hypoxia ( HH i.e full
chamber to 25,000').

It depends whether you want to know what you hypoxia symptoms (in
normobaric and CADO) are versus the rapidity of onset in HH (to
reinforce the urgency of the situation).

Thinking back to my previous post, one cause for sudden hypoxia for
glider pilots would be a sudden malfunction of the oxygen supply system
or running out of O2!
