[AZORES-Genealogy] Registo Civil in Terceira

I'm hoping someone would know how much it costs to request a Baptismo,
Casamento or Obit from a Registo Civil on the island of Terceira.

I agree Rick. It could have been that. It also could be that the "story" has
gotten skewed so-to-speak in the telling.

So far, I haven't found her birth record. I will eventually though, I hope.
Right now my focus is on my ancestors from Sao Miguel. She was from Faial.
Hopefully, by the time I switch focus, Faial will have more records on line.

That seems kind of strange. I would suspect that the priest knew who the
parents of your 3d great grandparents were and it was more of a matter of a
close relation ship and they could not get a dispensation.

If you could find her birth record it would be interesting.

I have never actually seen a record like that but it doesn't surprise me
that they would identify if it that way. My 3rd great grandmother according
to family history was never allowed to actually marry my 3rd great
grandfather because she was the result of a rape. Her mother ended up in the
Azores due to a shipwreck and she was raped by one of the sailors. The
catholic church labeled her (the baby) as "unclean" and would not allow the
marriage. So they just lived together for 60 years and had 9 children.

I've wondered how they would label her birth.

Greetings,

I've been reading all of the baptisms for Topo for 1860...I've seen
2 unusual records that I've never seen before and wonder if anyone else has
seen similar records. One of them says the birth is to a solteria and in
parentheses it says (vulgar assault), the other says the woman was married
but the child was due to adultery. I had often wondered if some of those
"roda" babies were due to assault by pirates but the records never indicated
it so since this one did I guess they do put it on the records. Has anyone
ever seen other records in Sao Jorge such as these?

Hi Jackie,

That's an interesting story..sad, but interesting so 3rd
grandmother.about what year was she born? I'm just curious because it
seems odd to me that I've never seen these kinds of records before and I've
read so many Sao Jorge records.the only other one that ever alluded to
such was from 1872 in Rosais that said the child was from the "crime" of
incest. Other than that they are all so similar regarding the births to
single mothers.

Marek,

Looks like there is an immigration port there.

Check the LDS catalog to see what was filmed. The bigger ports for Azoreans
were on the east coast (Providence, Boston, New Bedford, New York) and then
to HI and I think somewhat to San Francisco. But I've heard of a couple of
stories where they did come in through a lesser known port.

Celeste,

The shiplist here of Jan 1908 shows brothers Jose and Jacinto Avila Areias
traveling to Hayward California to join friend Joao M Diniz.  They are from
Villa Nova, Terceira. It's in the Concelho of Praia da Vitoria. Good chance
that's where Joao is from.

was 20 years old; a son, John who was 18 years old and a daughter, Mamie M. who
was 16 years old.  The father of these children was listed as being born in the

I am trying to find the birth place of John & Mary.  I have Azores on the

In this particular case I would venture to guess that the priest had heard
the annual obligatory Easter Duty confession of the "father" and the priest
may very well have known who the father was. But, because he was bound by
the seal of confession, he could never confront the child's mother and tell
her that "so and so" had told him in confession that he had fathered a child
with... Those small villages had one (maybe 2) priests. They knew everybody
personally, and since Easter Duty was obligatory, they heard everybody's
confession every year. They knew who was having illicit sex with whom. They
knew
who had abandoned their baby. Those priests must have suppressed smiles
when they recorded "pai não sabido". Happy Easter!

Nancy,
The URL or something is needed to navigate to that particular record, because
the # 2 that I found was a Maria, filha legitimata. Nothing unusual there.

Perhaps the priest. Most don't give a lot of detail (the supply of paper and
ink could be one factor). I remember sitting once with George Pacheco in
N.Dartmouth and I found a baptism that didn't follow the norm. George took a
look and in the baptism the priest documented that he asked the mother 3 times
who the father was and she stated every time she didn't know, but that the
priest felt that she did indeed know who the father of her baby was. And he
wrote something to that effect in the document. Another time, on a marriage,
there was a line that didn't follow the norm (or it was the first time that I
had ancestors get married around Easter). It said that they had fulfilled
their Lenten duties or something like that.

I think those are more of a rare find though. I think most priests and scribes
just did what they were told and followed the form for writing a baptism. They
had no idea that people would be looking at them hundreds of years later for
clues!

I've wondered how they would label her birth.

Nancy,

I would guess that "vulgar assault" would be a rape by today's standards. They
language was just different for it then. I'm sure a native speaker could shed
more light on that. I would guess that rapes or vulgar assaults have been
around since the beginning of time, but now it is more widely reported and
receives more press in the news. I would guess that back in the 1800s (or
earlier) it was considered something that the woman did to deserve it. Very
different perception then.

I've seen a record on Sao Miguel where it says the baby was born to the man,
single, adulterer and to the woman, married to so-and-so. By today's standards
though, the woman was the adulterer, as she was the one who was married. I
guess that would make the man a "player?" Is that the current lingo for men
who mess around with married women?

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] odd records

2010-03-31 Thread Cheri Mello
Nancy,

I would guess that "vulgar assault" would be a rape by today's standards.
They language was just different for it then. I'm sure a native speaker
could shed more light on that. I would guess that rapes or vulgar assaults
have been around since the beginning of time, but now it is more widely
reported and receives more press in the news. I would guess that back in
the 1800s (or earlier) it was considered something that the woman did to
deserve it. Very different perception then.

I've seen a record on Sao Miguel where it says the baby was born to the man,
single, adulterer and to the woman, married to so-and-so. By today's
standards though, the woman was the adulterer, as she was the one who was
married. I guess that would make the man a "player?" Is that the current
lingo for men who mess around with married women?

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] odd records

2010-03-31 Thread Jacki G.

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] odd records

Regards,
Nancy Jean
