Elaine,

I don't know why you have to sign in on some records Family Search, but you
do.

As for as I can tell, it's just an index that says William Chadwick married
a Foley in 1889 in Philadelphia.  It's not the actual marriage itself.
You'd want the license for them.  That would have the parents, if they were
asking for it in Philly in 1889.

[AZORES-Genealogy] FHC Site Question

 Not Portuguese genealogy but I am perplexed by the "sign in to see the
record" requirement

I found a family marriage on FHC site:
Groom:William Chadwick
Bride: Annie Foley
Date:  1889
Lic 24004
Image: 00110

It says I must sign in to see the record.  I have not seen this
beforesigning in to see the record.  Anyone have access to this record.
 I am particularly interested if it lists her parents names.

I am James Henriques and I live in Sacramento.  I've
done a little genealogical research on my father's side of the family (from
Flores Island); but, I haven't done any research on my mother' lineage.  My
mother's family was from Faial.  They lived in the Castelo Branco region of
the
Island where Flamingos is located.  On my mother's maternal line, the family

name was Garcia de Silva (Garcia Silva).  I am not sure if these ancestors
were
from Flamingos or not; however, it is very possible.

You'll find this name all Catholic Europe. It's a saints name , of course

some Scandinavians with the name also.

I always wonder if the Anselmo came from an Italian since that is common in 
part of Italy.

I have to say that this thread has given me some good giggles...
 
Anyway though, I just got off the phone with the California DMV. Driver's
licenses weren't required until 1913 and verbal and aduio tests can be given
as well as having an interpreter. Reading is not a required skill. You just
have to know the laws and obey them and be able to manuever the car with
sufficient skill. Which I seriously question how some people pass the
"sufficient skill" part. However, I imagine it would be pretty much the same
for other states as well.
 
My mother had a friend who has passed now, but he was totally color blind.
He could only see in greyscale. He drove and had a driver's license. He had
to memorize what order the red, yellow and green lights where in so that he
could tell which light was lit.

Chapter 326 of the Motor Vehicle Act, approved May 31, 1913, establishes the
document authorizing a person to operate a motor vehicle as an "operator's
license" or a "chauffeur's license." After December 31, 1913, no one may

So there you have it from Calif. anyway.

room temperature you got a license. Seriously they probably did not have

This has all been pretty interesting.  My grandfather went 
back to the Azores after fathering 11 children.  He died 
there.  I have no idea if he ever learned to read and write 
but; I know my grandmother did not.  Yet she owned a home in 
CA, raised her 11 children by herself or I should probably say 
with the help of the older children as I know they contributed 
their wages to her while living in her home and when they 
moved out continued to support her in various ways.  What 
wonderful examples of families pulling together for the

[AZORES-Genealogy] DNA by Ancestry.com

I set up two DNA projects on Ancestry.com:  Azores Y-DNA and Azores mtDNA.

If you tested with Ancestry and bought only 1 test, their DNA set up sort of
works.  Sort of.

I have the Ancestry subscription.  My name is Cheri, a female.  However, I
entered my dad's male (Y-DNA) results.  Ancestry doesn't ask about whose
results they are.  They just pull from my main account info and say that the
DNA results are Cheri's because I'm the one with the Ancestry subscription.
Never mind that I'm not a male with a Y chromosome.  Someone needs to teach
Ancestry about proxies.

Well, I guess I'll have to deal with that.  When seeing a female name in the
Y-DNA (male) project, users will have to ask if they are the proxy on the
kit.

But suppose you've tested 2 or more people's DNA with Ancestry?  And you
want to join one of the Azores DNA projects on Ancestry?  By default,
Ancestry will pull your kit and your Ancestry.com subscription info by
default and put it in the project.  You don't have a choice.

Ancestry says to do this:
Call the Ancestry DNA division at (800) 958-9124.
Each kit actually has an alternate log in.  You need to request it for each
kit.
Once you get the log in for the first kit, (let's pretend it's Y or male
DNA), you can join the Azores Y-DNA project.
Then get the log in for the 2nd kit (let's pretend it's mtDNA), you can join
the Azores mtDNA project.

And so forth and so on.  Their administrator tools there only all me to
accept people into a project.  Other than that, the seem to be almost the
same as the public end.  Ancestry pretty much has to assist DNA users, not
the administrators.

The main Azores DNA projects are on Family Tree DNA so if you are thinking
about where to test, that is the preferred company (www.ftdna.com).

Anything is possible.  In the US Anselmo has been changed many times but 
usually just the vowels or first letter.  Even in the Azores lists sometimes 
Ancelmo or Anzelmo.  In the US one translated it to Enselmo or Rnselmo.

My grandfather had a drivers license. I remember helping him study for it  
when I first learned to read. They had pictures of the road signs and I  
can't remember, but I would assume he took an oral test. He never signed  
his name.
My grandmother learned how to read and write when she came to the United  
States. He made an 'x'... she signed his name.

the one she picked. If not, then she asked for another pretty card to be  
read to her.




Now, I don't know if that card story is true (my mom was the  
granddaughter-in-law). It may have been a story to tell an 8 year old so  
I would go away and she could finish the laundry or whatever. The car  
story is true though. My dad was there in the car with his grandparents  
and knew how they drove.

I have also found in a lot of documents that my ancestors could not
read or write. But still today i have a Godfather, born on Sao Miguel
island in 1935, immigrated to Canada, got his drivers licence ( i also
believe it was something he paid under the table for) and completed
lists of things to do by his boss by getting someone to read it to
him. He'd amazingly memorize his duties and got the jobs done!  My
Grandmother was born in 1925 and never learned to read or write...but
i have letters from her...written by my aunts or cousins who would
write for her while she would dictate. Although it isn't her hand
writing...the letters are precious to me.

room temperature you got a license. Seriously they probably did not have
