Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] introduction myself to the group

2011-07-21 Thread E Sharp
Hi Ricardo,

I have done some research on the Chaves family from Santa Maria as someone
in my family married into this family. There is a book I was able to
purchase quite a few years ago and it came from Santa Maria (a friend got it
for me) and it is called Um Ramo Dos Chaves by Dr. Pe. Joao Chaves de
Bairos. He is/was a priest from Santo Espirto, Santa Maria who wrote a
genealogy book about the Chaves family. I don't have the book anymore it as
I gave it to this Chaves family.

Welcome to the group Ricardo! I have done some extensive work on my ancestry.
My maternal grandmother was from S. António além Capelas and I might be able to
give you some help in that area if you send me the particulars. I also have
some ancestors from Ribeira Grande. Since you live in S. Miguel you are
fortunate to have easy access to the Archives and to source material which is
not available to the rest of us. You also have living in Ponta Delgada, Dr.
Miguel Soares da Silva, who is probably the the leading expert on Santo António
families. The other, Rev. Joseph Viveiros, lives in the US.

Good luck, and let me know if I can be of any help.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] De Genere or applications to priesthood and old pictures of the Azores

2011-07-21 Thread joao ventura
Hi Cheri,

I am still adding information. These documents are important if you are
searching for information on a specific village and there are no longer parish
records available. On other occasions they confirm the information one has on a
family: in certain villages there are many couples with similar names, living
in the same time period. On the documents there is the name of the applicant,
his parents and grandparents and their places of birth. For example there is an
application for two brothers: one is native of Terceira and the other is native
of Faial.

Once someone pays for a record that information will be available for all.

I will be adding more photos soon.

Hi Joao,

This is a great resource!  Thanks for making these records available.  It must
have taken a lot of time and hours and hours of work!  Thank you!

A couple of questions on how to use the web site.

1) I guess if I knew I had a priest in my tree, I'd just type in his name.  But
I don't.  So I decided just to look at the list.  I didn't see anyone being
listed as a native of Sao Miguel.  Is this a list of everybody, or are you
still adding to it?

2) Blocked information:  Is that just a gray bar, or is that where the details
will become active once someone pays for that record?

I love the old photos.  I wonder who Mr. Borges was on Sao Miguel.  Someone
really liked his garden!

How nice to hear from another Chaves, even if we are not related. My paternal

I enjoyed reading your blog, and noticed your wife is from Nordeste. My

I also have Furtado in Pedreira and Achada, and Melo Botelho from Santo Antonio

If anything sounds familiar, let me know. I'm happy to share.

Hi Rick Judy,

I have checked my files for Antonio da Rosa Furtado born Dec 09, 1892 and do
not have him listed. If you are positive this birth date is correct then it
would seem that you need to research marriage records for this couple in
Oakland for 1917. Her father's last name would have been spelled Jorge.
George is of course Anglicized here.

As for Orta, that is how it sounds to us and said by our people. The
confusion often is in the lack of understanding that Horta, pronounced
Orta is often used for where they came from, but since the whole Island of
Faial is in the district or county of Horta, they often leave out that they
are also from a town, like Salao in the county of Horta. It is then similar
to being from New York City, New York State, but only saying your from New
York. On Faial we also have the city of Horta, in the district/county of
Horta, Faial. It can easily throw off even the best researchers if they
don't know or forget or assume to quickly.

Sorry I don't have more for you, but you have to little for me to go on
right now.

Hello Emil

Your cousin Donna said to check with you regarding my Furtado line. My
grandfather is from Faial (family said Orta I think they meant Horta.which I
think is not right, I found some information about Salao??)

He is Antonio Rosa Furtado (could have a Rosa line?) b. 12-9-1892 m. in
Oakland 1917 to Mary E. George , she born Half Moon Bay area California,
but her parents Antonio George and Mary Martin born in Azores (have not
started that line yet!). Grandpa died of cancer 1-17-1971 Santa Cruz, Ca.
where he retired. Thought some relatives to be in that area. He had
relatives in San Francisco area and Vallejo, California.

He I believe had a brother Joseph S Furtado and Grandpa sponsored his
nephew Manuel R Furtado (in his late 70's now) to come to Americas not sure
if Joseph is Manuel's father or not ?? He settled in Oakdale Ca. and
married a Marie Camboia?. I have tried to get information from him but
nothing yet (5 Months now.)

Somewhere I remember maybe another brother possibly named Manuel Furtado
(think younger) I do not have any more from his side than that and
everywhere I look it is a dead end.. I am beginning to wonder if he had
changed part of his name or dropped some but his relatives all have
Furtado.?? I have checked out some Furtado's from Faial and the only clue
maybe is the Rosa in his name. Most all the relatives who would remember
history are passed on except for one and her memory is short, my mother
Geraldine, youngest in the family had lots of knowledge of family but she
died of Alzheimer's . I also checked and the earthquake destroyed records
during his birth recording for that area so that's out.

Can you help me?? Are there any clues from what little I have provided that
maybe connects to your records that might direct me to my next step??

Anything would help

2011-07-21 Thread Jacki G.
Welcome Ricardo!

I am currently researching my roots from Sao Miguel. Which is my Fernandes
and Furtado line. I am only to my 4th great grandparents. They were from
Fajã de Cima and Fajã de Baixo. It's taken me 6 years to get that far. First
I am only able to research part time like you and second because my great
grandfather was killed when my grandmother was 2 and she only knew his name
and her grandmother's first name and married name from her second
marriage. Also, my grandmother died before I started my research so I only
have my mother and aunt to try and remember bits of information. My mother
is nearly eighty and my aunt is 84 so their information is not always that
reliable or helpful.

It's nice to know that we have someone in the group who has lived in Sao
Miguel. (Of course there could be others that I don't know of too) Who
knows, maybe our lines will end up crossing somewhere. The world is awfully
small sometimes.

Anyway, it's good to have you in the group.

Costa and daughter Lina Tavares. This is my mother's paternal side and my
cousins.

My father's aunt, Merces de Sousa Caloura m. Manuel de Silva Rocha from
Ribeira Grande. Their son, my father's first cousin, Padre Anton de Sousa
Caloura Rocha is a retired priest there. He is around 86 now.

Hope you can find your family.

I have a cousin from Lisbon who wrote a book on his father's paternal side
(my father's paternal side). They had migrated to Canada from Sao Miguel. My
Aunt has the book which is in Portuguese. I learned a lot with the family
tree on it and some stories about them. It was published in Portugal.

Good luck on your endeavor and maybe we are connected, too.

Hello researchers,

I would like to say hi to all here, my name is Ricardo Chaves, I still
have a lot of work to do but already done some research with baptism
books and after many hours of work, I got my first results. I am at my
6th generation on my father's side. Chaves. I was born in Santa Maria,
I live in Sao Miguel for 17 years. I don't do Genealogy as a full time
job, I do it at free time. My main goal is to write a book for my
family. I try to research all names I can, including my wife's side
too. I also love to work with old pictures.

I sincerely hope to find some connections here, although I believe no
one in my most direct family is doing this, as far as I know, I am the
only one that had made some longer steps.

These are the names on my father side: Chaves and Carvalho from Santo
Espirito-Santa Maria, Tavares and Resendes from Ribeira Grande-Sao
Miguel), Rocha from Santo Antonio - São Miguel), and more.

These are the names on me mother side: Ponte from Lomba do Botao -
Povoacao - Sao Miguel, Freitas from Santa Barbara - Santa Maria,
Cabral from Sao Pedro - Santa Maria, and much more.

I have been doing it for over 4 years but very slowly, this to say
that I am not an expert but have learned a lot by reading and talking
with people. I hope I can be of any help here and hope mostly to learn
and find roots.

Thank you all for reading, more here www.rchaves.com/blog

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] De Genere or applications to priesthood and old pictures of the Azores

2011-07-21 Thread celeste perry
Something happened when Joao was going over some of these records.  I had an
ancestor whose father was not named on his baptism record.  Joao was looking
for information on someone in the same area (for someone else) and he found my
grandfather's ancestor and his father and paternal grandparents were named.  I
think Joao told me that to prove the person was an old christian he had to
have some people who were living at the time verify his father's name, even
though it was incognito on his baptism record.

Whoops!

This link is for NEW orders for the sale that I was talking about:
http://goo.gl/bnbq7

If you are an EXISTING customer, the only thing on sale for you is Family
Finder. To order that, go to www.ftdna.com and log in with your kit number
and password.

Hi Edward,

It depends on your goal (or if you have a goal) for DNA testing. I'll give
