RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Records I have Compiled.

2011-12-28 Thread Gayle Machado
Eliseu,

I have found another record for Ribeira Grande:
Manuel Furtado Forinhao (son of Manuel Furtado Forinhao and Ana Gaspar)
married Gracia Gularte (widow of Mateus Luis, she was the daughter of Manuel da
Costa and Clara Gularte). He was born in Ribeira Grande, she was from
Candelaria. They married 27 Feb 1729.

If I find any more I'll let you know.

Gayle

P.S. Is there a reason for your request ? Are you looking for someone in
particular ?

Subject: RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Records I have Compiled.

Eliseu,

The list is rather short. But, here goes:
 From Graciosa
1. Andre Rodrigues Miranda (son of Antonio Miranda and Maria Reyes,
deceased) married Theresa Garcia
(daughter of Gaspar Garcia Sarmento and Maria Pereira.) She was
born in Candelaria, Pico, and he was
from Luz, Garciosa. Date of Marriage 17 Aug 1733

 From Sao Miguel
2. Antonio Rodrigues Benavides (son of Manuel Benavides and Maria
Rodrigues) married Maria Gularte
(widow of Manuel Pereira.) He was from Rabo Peixo, Ribeira
Grande, Sao Miguel, while she was from
Candelaria, Pico. They married 25 Oct 1730.

3. Antonio Rodrigues Luis (son of Antonio Rodrigues Luis and Maria
da Conceicao) married Maria
Estrella/Josefa (widow of Manuel Arruda). He was from
Candelaria. Either she or her prior husband was
from Nossa Senhora da Conceicao, Ribeira Grande, Sao Miguel. (I
must have thought I knew which one I
meant when I wrote out the record 17+ years ago.) Also, my
records show Maria da Estrella while NEPS
shows her as Maria Josefa from Candelaria. They married 3/13
May 1806. Once again a conflict with
NEPS as to the actual date.

I apologize for the confusion in the last record. There are two primary
reasons: 1) The Candelaria records are difficult to read due to fading, ink
smears and bleeding; 2) I was learning as I went with the marriage records
being the first records I transcribed. I did the obits next and some of the
baptisms. I would rather tell you where I am unsure than to pretend I was an
authority. If the people in the last record as of interest to you, I figure
you'll check it out and get back to me with your interpretation. I suspect you
can read Portuguese better than I do.

I hope this helps you. Good luck with your research.

Gayle

Hi Gayle,

Is it possible for you to send me any possible records of people from
Graciosa and Ribeira Grande that may have married in Pico?

I would appreciate it enormously!!!

2011-12-28 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
Hi Ed,

You are not doing badly for a beginner. The date is 4 Jun 1867 the book this
is in is "Santa Cruz Marriages 1867" The book is held in the archives in
Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel

I read Antonio da Costa Medeiros baptized Nossa Senhora da Rosario, Logoa,
age 18 Legitimate son of Francisco da Costa Medeiros baptized Nossa Senhora
da Rosario, Logoa and Antonia Emelia do Coraco baptized Santa Cruz, Logoa
married

Rosa Isabel do Carmo baptized Santa Cruz, Logoa, age 20, Legitimate daughter
of Antonio Tavares baptized Santa Curz Logoa, and Jacinta Rosa baptized Sao
Roque, Rosto do Cao

I added the full names of the parish where they were baptized. The marriages
for the parents could be in either Santa Cruz or Rosario so you may have to
look in both. I would start looking in the mothers parish first in this case
Santa Cruz for Antonia Emelia and Sao Roque for Jacinta Rosa.

Hi Ed,

I started a new thread so it can be followed easier.

It sounds like the information you need is the marriage of your
great-grandparents Antonio da Costa and Maria Rosa Isabel. If your
information is correct about Lagoa then you need to search the marriage
records in that location. The two churches are Santa Cruz which is the
Matriz or mother church and Nossa Senhora das Necessidades a newer and
smaller church. The film from the family history center is Marriages for
Santa Cruz #1438008 which has the marriage records from 1555 - 1870. I
would start at the very end of the film and work back based on the fact
that Jose da Costa was born on 15 Jun 1870. If he was the first child then
you should be able to find the marriage record fairly easily.

I do not have the information on NS Necessidades so I am not sure what years
their records cover perhaps someone else on the list knows but I would look
on that film only if I did not find them on the one above.

But wait I just remembered Logoa is on the CCA website Check this record out
http://pg.azores.gov.pt/drac/cca/biblioteca_digital/SMLAGSTCC1860-1869/SMLAG
STCC1860-1869_item1/P108.html The brides name is off a little but I think it
is your great-grandparents. I will let others weigh in on this. The marriage
date is 4 Jun 1867.

I received a copy of the passport appeal which had to be done in the Azores
before Jacinto Vieira Anselmo and family could leave Sao Miguel and go to
the Hawaiian Kingdom to work. Apparently they had to describe the workers
before the passport was issued by the local authorities to the Hawaiian
ones. They have an emigration museum in the province Ribeira Grande on Sao

If you want to do a search the site é http: / / mea.cm-ribeiragrande.pt

received this from the curator of the museum.

  Hello group

I came across something in one of my lines.
I have Justa Coelho, b. Feb.8.1582 in Se, Angra do Heroismo,
Terceira and married to Pedro Goncalves Linhares baptizing a child in Porto
Judeu Dec. 8 1644. 62 years after!!! I believe some genealogical references are
incorrect as for the parents of Justa Coelho married to Pedro, as a daughter of
Joao Garcia Romayo and Barbara Coelho, more likely a grandaughter and possible
daughter of a Justa Coelho, born in 1582.

Mabe the Genealogias da Ilha Terceira by Jorge Forjaz might
have something about it.

I have two people, from Sao Miguel, that I am researching:

Manoel NUNES from Sao Vincente Ferreiro Parish, (born about 1867 to

is very interesting. I actually found the village information on the Hawaiian
passports on the CCA site.

I received a copy of the passport appeal which had to be done in the Azores
before Jacinto Vieira Anselmo and family could leave Sao Miguel and go to the
Hawaiian Kingdom to work. Apparently they had to describe the workers before
the passport was issued by the local authorities to the Hawaiian ones. They
have an emigration museum in the province Ribeira Grande on Sao Miguel.
If you want to do a search the site é http: / / mea.cm-ribeiragrande.pt /. It
doesn't have alot but will grow. I received this from the curator of the
museum.

My husband found his great grandfathers on the draft registration. My
grandmothers was on her sisters obituary.

Good luck with your search,
Patsy (Dutra/Anselmo) Nostrome

For those going on this trip, Southwest Airlines yesterday, and it ends

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Locating the village or freguesia

2011-12-28 Thread Gail Elizares
Ava,

This is so cool, finding about your family. Remember the saying you don't
know who you are related too? It's going to take some time for me to find
out where my grandparents came from. On the de Souza family his first name
doesn't even show up on the ships list. I don't know if he went by another
name. I don't know if he was married in Portugal or in Hawaii. His
immigration was in 1883 and his marriage. It shows 2 girls by the name of
Maria, one born in 1882 and one in 1883. I don't know if they are the same
in one person or different. It showed my grandmother had 8 children and 6
was living but what I had is 7 if I include the 2 Marias. If they had two
Maria's one could have died. I think there youngest child either died or
moved with someone else. He was 4 years old in the 1900 census and doesn't
appear in the 1910 census. A lot of groundwork on this one. I just wish I
could spend more time with it. Pretty soon I'm going to be really busy and
won't be able to do anything. I'm trying to find out as much as I can using
whatever resources I have and probably make the trip to Honolulu to find the
rest.

Hi Ed,

I started a new thread so it can be followed easier.

It sounds like the information you need is the marriage of your
great-grandparents Antonio da Costa and Maria Rosa Isabel. If your information
is correct about Lagoa then you need to search the marriage records in that
location. The two churches are Santa Cruz which is the Matriz or mother church
and Nossa Senhora das Necessidades a newer and smaller church. The film from
the family history center is Marriages for Santa Cruz #1438008 which has the
marriage records from 1555 – 1870. I would start at the very end of the film
and work back based on the fact that Jose da Costa was born on 15 Jun 1870. If
he was the first child then you should be able to find the marriage record
fairly easily.

I do not have the information on NS Necessidades so I am not sure what years
their records cover perhaps someone else on the list knows but I would look on
that film only if I did not find them on the one above.

But wait I just remembered Logoa is on the CCA website Check this record out
http://pg.azores.gov.pt/drac/cca/biblioteca_digital/SMLAGSTCC1860-1869/SMLAGSTCC1860-1869_item1/P108.html
The brides name is off a little but I think it is your great-grandparents. I
will let others weigh in on this. The marriage date is 4 Jun 1867.

Rick

Not sure if you can help me I am just a beginner my great great grandparents
are reported to have come from Lagoa Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel. Antonio da
Costa about 1835 and his wife Maria Rosa Isabel about 1839 had a son Jose da
Costa 15 Jun 1870 and three girl all listed as Maria 1872,1877 and 1881.

Maybe you can point me where to start.

Thanks Ed
