[AZORES-Genealogy] One thing DNA Testing Can Do

2012-01-04 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
Hi All,

I recently had a family finder test done on my father (he is 91) and even
though I have my genealogy done with no brick walls or parents unknown I
thought it would be a good idea to add the data to the pool especially since
my dad's ancestry is all from Sao Miguel.

When the results were posted I had a number of matches but what was
interesting was one of them was a person I have had contact with on this and
other lists over the years. He was at a brick wall with his
great-grandmother. He had found his other great-grandparents from Fayal but
he did not have an island for this great-grandmother. As my father's
ancestors are all from Sao Miguel with no one from Fayal then my friend now
has an Island and a few villages to search bringing him closer to jumping
over his brick wall.

This only emphasis the importance of adding more tests to the DNA data to
help us contact cousins but also help others through their brick walls.

Just a reminder, there are only a few days left on the DNA Test sale (See
below)

Archives.com Partners with Family Tree DNA to Offer DNA Testing
DNA Tests Available Through Archives.com for the First Time Providing Access
to the World's Largest Genetic Genealogy Database

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. -- Archives.com, a website devoted to making family
history simple and affordable, announces another exciting way users can
explore their family heritage. Archives has partnered with Family Tree DNA ,
the world leader in genetic genealogy, to enable users to purchase DNA tests
through its website for the first time. These are being offered at up to 30
percent off the regular price for a limited time. Archives recognizes that
DNA testing plays a critical role in family history research, and is glad to
offer a simple, convenient way for users to get started with genetic
genealogy.

The growing field of genetic genealogy utilizes science to tell us more
about our ancestors, and maternal and paternal lineages. Family Tree DNA can
help researchers to verify known connections or uncover previously unknown
ethnic ties with the world's largest genetic genealogy database of over 350
thousand records, several times larger than the nearest competitor.
Archives.com now offers three types of DNA tests: the Y-chromosome DNA test
to trace paternal lines and surname matches; the mitochondrial DNA test to
determine maternal line matches; and the Family Finder test kit, which tests
autosomal DNA to reveal ethnic percentages and trace genes across maternal
and paternal lines.

Archives Director of Product Joe Godfrey commented, "Genetic genealogy is an
extremely exciting field. We've been interested in integrating DNA testing
into Archives.com for some time, and I'm glad we are working with Family
Tree DNA, the world's largest genetic genealogy database, to make this
happen. This initial integration will give users the ability to find
historical records and start exploring their genetic genealogy all in one
place. In the future, we intend to provide users with more robust tools and
resources that will enhance the experience even further."

Family Tree DNA VP of Operations Max Blankfeld noted, "We are thrilled to
partner with Archives.com, a website we know will play an important role in
the future of online family history research. Archives.com provides a
genuine alternative to the more expensive websites out there. Easy access to
DNA testing will allow Archives.com users to expl

Eric,

I was working on a Linhares family from Ribeira Quente, Povacao. They
settled in Flores around 1900. As I looked through the parish records I saw
dozens of families that came from there settling around Lajes Flores.
Wonder what prompted that?

Hi List,

I was (am still) at the Oakland FHL today and it was suggested that I try
and find out which town on Sao Miguel had Linhares in it. This is to help
narrow down the bigger search that I have to do to locate the family. If
anyone has Linhares from Sao Miguel, and you happen to know which area they
are from, please let me know.

Thanks in advance!

My Great Grandmothers name was Mary Henriques.  Henriques is her maiden name
according to my grandmothers social security application.  She was born in
approx. 1840 according to her death certificate.  She died in 1923 in Butte
County.

Now her sister Rosa is using the maiden name of Bettencourt.  But on her death
certificate her father and mothers last names are Silvester and Silviera.  So I
don't know if Bettencourt is a married name if she was married when she had her
1st child in 1878 in Sao Jorge?

Hi,

It reads "Morsinha" if you look at the "r" in the word portuguese you will
be able to match it and the "s". The i is a littler harder to see because
it looks because it looks like the person dragged the pen in order to "dot"

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] What Happened to FURTADO'S in Fall River, Massachusetts?

2012-01-04 Thread Pat McCoy
That is so sad! Now that I've discovered that the descendants of
Caetano Moniz FURTADO are related to my friend, I was hoping to be
able to contact them. My friend grew up knowing virtually nothing
about his Portuguese heritage and I thought it would be nice to put
him in touch with his new-found cousins.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Help with word on marriage certificate for Charles Costa (pimental) and Violet Vasconcel(l)os

2012-01-04 Thread Dano
I read the name as Moronha (which would be the normal spelling of this
name), however, you should take note of the fact that a notation at
the bottom of the document states that there is an "alteration." It
could just mean that the name was originally misspelled and then
corrected after the fact.

Kim,

Do you have this?  Is this them?

Applying for a Passport for a trip back to from Azores to US for embarking and
landing.

Frank Smith July 3, 1901, consulate, Sao Miguel.  Travelling with wife Rosa
Smith, children:  Annie Smith b. 9/26/1884, Rosa Smith b. Jan 18, 1889, Mary
Smith b. 8/3/1895, Agnes Smith b. 7/27/1895.  All b. San Rafael CA.

It says Frank was born in Sao Jorge Apr. 28, 1856, came to US on the Schooner
Galena from Sao Jorge June 19, 1874 and he has resided in San Rafael for 26
years, 1874-1900.  He was naturalized Aug. 1, 1881, Superior Court, San Rafael
CA.  He is a dairyman.

They left the US Sep 12, 1900, landed in Sao Jorge Sep 24, 1900 and resided in
Sao Jorge since Sep 24, 1900.  He is temporarily residing in Sao Miguel for 30
days awating this Passport.  Signed July 2, 1901 Consulate in Sao Miguel.

I can send you a copy in the mail.  In the meantime, I will try and find their
ship's manifest on the way back and maybe to the Passportes from Sao Miguel
which will give you her birth name.

2012-01-04 Thread Kim Rowe
Hi Elaine,

Yes that is them.  I already have that information.  I really appreciate you
offering to send it to me.  I just didn't know how to go about finding the
freqesia and village for them.

Rose (it could also be Rosa, RosIE or Rosalind) Frank Smiths wife had there 1st
child Mary was born in June 1878 (according to the 1900 census under Manuel &
Mary Freitas) in Sao Jorge I found out from her death certificate I think it
was.

My great grandmothers sister Rose Smith (who is married to Frank Smith) is
using the last names of Bettencourt, Silviera & Silvester.  And the name of
Sodre is popping up I find.  She was born in December 1855.  Is there something
I can do to help look for the information.  I have ancestry also.  But not the
world edition.  I have just the U.S. edition.

Thank you,
Kim Rowe
