RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Passport/passenger list question
Shirely, I’m sorry it could be Hayward, CA. We do have them in the census in Hawaii, and one census says they came in 1883 and one says 1887 but it has to be 1883 because Maria was born in Hawaii. I don’t know if it is accurate but I show a child name Maria born in 1882 and approximate date of marriage 1883. They show a second child name Maria da Estrella Souza born in 1883 in Hawaii. Second Maria married Joseph Dias and lived in Alameda County. I tried ordering death certificates covering 1931 through 1935 but they couldn’t find any. They are double checking with the state to make sure they didn’t die during that period. If it comes back a no record found I will try to order another death certificate covering the next five years. I’m doing this because I can’t find them in the 1940 census so I think they died during that period. It seems like at one point there were two Maria’s in Hawaii but I’m not sure. I got an email overnight from Mr. Doug da Rocha Holmes. He has traced all the names in my list from Lajes do Pico and has sent me the translation of my GGgrandmother Maria Lial da Roza baptism from the church record. I had the year right but now have the date. But best of all He Identified me as one of his cousins, so I have my first official living cousin from the Azoires. Since he has already traced everyone he is going to be my source for ordering documents from my families lines. Sounds like a great connection. I am just starting with all this (maybe since it seems daunting) How long did you work on things before finding this great connection? lucky, lucky you! so far I have not found one person researching my family lines. FTDNA has received my test kit, so hopefully I will be lucky also and find someone that way. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] confirmation
Fred, Mike joined this list about 10 weeks ago. Not too sure what he did on his genealogy before that, but he was pretty much a beginner in the world of Portuguese genealogy. He must have read up on things. He posted his findings here. This census, that marriage, a WWI Draft, etc. Since the posts were coming as he made the discoveries, I emailed him offline, suggesting he make a post on one ancestor outlining everything he did on that particular ancestor (as I, (as well as others), was getting confused over time). Elaine S. and others helped piece it together. Not too sure where Mike read up on things, but I do have my how to guide on the Azores GenWeb here: goo.gl/9CO4r If you run Mike's email addy through this group's archives/web board search feature, you can read his journey here: http://groups.google.com/group/azores From my end, it looks like Mike took only 2.5 months. When I started 20 years ago (no computers), it took me 4 years. Times are different now! Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] confirmation
Lisa, It seems like most researchers (Portuguese and otherwise) need to go back about 200 years (to the early 1800s) to find another genealogist researching those same lines. Note I said most. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] confirmation
I still almost can't believe it, I've been on ancestry for about two years and for the most part thought I had exhausted that until Cheri s suggestion then Elaine found one thing then another and I got lucky on the neps site. But if I hadn't sent the email about the DNA website and then talked to Cheri on the phone I'd still I'd still be where I was. Fred keep looking and asking, i'm sure I asked questions that made no sense but the group was great about it, didn't throw me out and kept helping me, I can't wait until the next discovery...
