2013-03-29 Thread Karen Huffman
I am native Santa Claran. I have 3 generations of grandparents from one
side and 4 on the other that are buried in Santa Clara Mission Cemetery.
For some reason one set of great grandparents are in Calvary in San Jose. I
grew up with MANY Portuguese and Italian families in our neighborhoods. I
do go pay respects every so often to all these relatives. If you need a
look-up or picture I will do it for you. I now live 2 1/2 hours from there
so it won't be immediate though.

I am trying to find the names of the old catholic Cemeteries in San Jose, CA

Unfortunately an Obit would help but I do not have access to San Jose Mercury.
So if anyone knows the names I think one is Calvary but I think there is

Good Day Everyone, I am searching my family line: da Silveira / Silveira.
When they immigrated in 1893, their surname was da Silveira. In America, all
records have Silveira. The family immigrated from Faial to New Bedford, MA in
1893. I am trying to find records, from Horta, Faial. Actually any records
would be wonderful. Joao Ignacio da Silveira (Silveira) and Rosa Leanora Perry
Da Rosa immigrated with seven children. One child was born in New, Bedford,
soon after they immigrated, in 1893. They may have had more children, born in
Faial, yet I am not sure. Joao Ignacio da Silveira b. approx. 1854 (I don't

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Considerations in Quoting Sources

Hi all,

Before CCA began to place images on line the only source I used for the records
I had from the Acores was to use the Church, year and page number from the film
at the FHC.

This worked well in most cases except when the record pages were unreadable. In
those cases I would end up using a statement like “Image number 16 on the film,
bottom right side”. In all cases this method worked well when going back to the
film to verify information and to re-look the record. Not doing it this way you
would have to search for the date which could be time consuming.

When using the images from the CCA site besides the information I previously
included in citing the source I add “CCA image number (i.e. 0049)”. This
allows me not only to go to the film image but to go to the CCA image to
re-look a record. This is helpful when you did not make a copy of the record
and cannot get back to the FHC.

I guess the question is what and how are you recording your sources and are you
including the CCA image number?

My grandfather came to the United States in the early 1880's. His name
was Francisco Jose Luiz(s) from Pedro Miguel, Faial. It is spelled Luiz on
this gravestone here in Sacramento, Ca. However, as of the 1900 census,
he was already going by Frank Lewis and all of his descendants have used
the Lewis surname instead of Luiz.

In my database, I have 19 people of Portuguese descent with the first name
of Luis or Luiz. I have 27 people of Portuguese descent with the last

I need to figure out how many people I have in my database of Portuguese
descent. I merged it together many years ago with my mom's Ozark lines.
Should have never done that. If I had it separate, I would know what
percentage of people that I have with the name of Luis/Luiz and that would let
me
know how common it is. It seems it my family to be of medium frequency
(based on my research).
