Hi, I know Henrietta quite well, and there isn't much that she knows about my family that hasn't already been shared; however, that doesn't really answer my question that whatever the format is that you used, I can't open it, and apparently, I am not the only one since Marilyn is asking about the format. If the format is one that I won't be able to get to without purchasing a program that is fine, but I thought maybe there was a way to get to look at the data. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Sousa family
Tyler S, Every genealogy program out there as their own format that you save. You do your work on your tree (apparently in Family Tree Builder), hit File - Save and it saves it as a .uzed. Those using Family Tree Maker hit File - Save and I think it saves as .ftm Mine get saved as .pjc. So with all these software programs on the market with their proprietary inner workings can't talk to each other. So that's when the LDS Church came up with the GEDCOM format (GEnealogy Data COMmunication). All genealogy software programs have the ability to read and create a GEDCOM. The GEDCOM format is a bit dated now. So not everything you've done will come through (pictures, attachments of an ancestor's death certificate, etc). But the basics will. In just about any genealogy program, go to File - Export. Somewhere in there is an option to export as a GEDCOM (and if it asks, it's version 5.5). Now Tyler, just to be sure, you want to send your database out to this list of 1100 people and anyone who sees the file in the archive/web board/forum? Or would you rather state the name of the couple from Sao Jorge, their freguesia and birth dates and then do the same for your ancestors from Terceira? Those that have those surnames from those locations can then contact you directly and you can send a Gedcom to them. [AZORES-Genealogy] Souza anywhere in the U.S.
Repost for Fred Souza, fsouza31 at comcast.net Cheri, Thanks so much for clarifying how this works. I don't have any connection to a genealogy program yet, but I regularly read the correspondence from within the group, and this was the first time I had seen SOUSA mentioned, so I wanted to look at what he had just in case it gave some hints to my family. My only surviving uncle (born in the US) seems to think there was a dramatic name change so that our last name shouldn't even be Souza, (and I have some feeling that he may be right since my dad had issues when he retired because of the name he thinks is the right one being on his birth certificate). Of course, this makes finding any information really complicated. On the other side it is even more complicated because there maternal surname issue and there being a lack of any family to contact creates another dead end. At this point I will be satisfied to just get back to the information from the original immigrants, and leave it up to my kids and cousins to go from there. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Souza anywhere in the U.S.
Fred S, You can get a stand alone genealogy software program that you install on your own computer, or you can do one in the cloud, such has housing your tree on Ancestry.com or Geni.com or any thing similar. I'm pretty sure Sousa (or the older spelling Souza) are one of the top 5 Portuguese surnames. I'm pretty sure just about every island has Sousa families on it. I don't know your definition of dramatic is, but most of us deal with the name changes. They seem to change every couple of generations, but most names can be found back in the family tree somewhere. I'm lucky that I'm the 10th generation to have the surname Mello. When I go back to that ancestor, his name was Jacome. His wife was a Mello. So my line gets it from her. Without specifics on your immigrant ancestors (names, dates, places) it is difficult to help. Gail E, You tested your DNA, so you know more than you think. Don't know which one of your lines yet, but your DNA is dancing around a group of us with Vila Franca ancestry. RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Souza anywhere in the U.S.
Aloha Cheri, Sorry Cheri my misspelling it should be Sao Miguel in the Azores. I did find quite a bit more info since I posted my tree. Just need to find the time to put it in. My biggest set back on the Souza side is I can't find him in any of the ship lists nor my great grandmother. This is where I'm hoping that George is going to be able to help me. I'm not sure where we connect but I do have a feeling it is through the Barboza or Barbosa side. That would be my mother's grandmother. If that is our link, just to let you know I do have a family pic with her and her husband and all the children. I'll keep on trudging... Thanks, Gail E. "Lajes, Terceira" is certainly sufficient.Similarly, when writing São Roque, if you mean the one on Pico, write as "São Roque do Pico" or "São Roque, Pico." And don't call it "ROGUE" by mistake. RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Souza anywhere in the U.S.
Cheri, Looking into my notes she was born in Sao Miguel, Azores, around 1872 and died in Paauilo, Hi 1943. Her dad was Jose Freitas Silva born Aug 05, 1884, (I don't know where) and died October 22, 1908 probably in Paauilo because he is buried at Kukaiau County Cemetery next to Paauilo. I don't have anything on her mother. Her husband Francisco da Luz came from Madeira. It seems she came over around 1882 to Hawaii. From my notes that I got from a family member it seems she had 3 brothers Manuel, Marion, and Antone, two sisters Evelyn and Dolores. It seems Antone, Evelyn and Dolores carried the Barboza name. Gosh Portuguese carries too many names, LOL. Through the DNA it does seem we have a closer connection right? I'm just curious to see where the connection is. I'm still kind of tied up now but hopefully I can spend a lot more time researching and getting more organized in a couple of months. Gail E.
