I had not had problems with the site until just now, when I tried to access baptismos in Sao Jose, Ponta Delgada. It appears that all, or most, of the Sao Jose records are inaccessible. [AZORES-Genealogy] Ancestors from Corvo
Repost for Michael Hallstone, michael.hallstone at gmail.com I stumbled upon this thread looking for Portuguese butcher shop near Turlock, California. My great grandparents were originally from the small island of Corvo and came to Central California in the early 1900s or so. I've been to Corvo, so trust me, my great grandparents did not immigrate to the US from that tiny island because they were from the middle or upper classes. -- For options, such as changing to List, Digest, Abridged, or No Mail (vacation) mode, log into your Google account and visit this group at http://groups.google.com/group/Azores. Thank you Margaret and Cheri! Cheri, I agree; way too many commas and I was sure it was all about her (which I should be) but was confused when they put the Pico information after her husband's name. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help with an Obitos - Laurianna Florida
Lee E, They were a little too comma crazy back then. I don't know what modern Portuguese is like in these records today, but if I wrote something with that many commas in English, I'd have a lot of red marks on my paper and probably sent to remedial English. Laurianna Florinda, of the age of 74 years, worker domestic, widow of Francisco Costa Duarte, native of the freguesia of Sao Matheus of the island of Pico, council of Magdalena, of the same Diocese, daughter legitimate of Francisco de Mattos, and of Joanna Ignacia, ja de functoS, naturaeS of the same freguesia of Sao Matheus, blah blah blah Too many commas. And you would think that the reference after the name should refer to the last named person, but not all priests/scribes wrote like that. I read it a couple of times. The "s" after Laurianna's parents are referring to both parents. When both parents are from the same freguesia, the notation is made after the mother's name and has an "s" after it. Laurianna's parents are from Pico. Laurianna might be from Pico too. I kinda think that's what the first mention of S.Matheus refers to. Even though this is one big paragraph with a zillion commas, Laurianna is the subject and I think that the references are all to her, even though they put the S.Matheus after Francisco's name. They should have written (in my opinion) that Laurianna was 74, native of S. Mateus, widow of Francisco, daughter of so and so Then it would have been crystal clear. Laurianna's marriage will state where she's from. Check S.Mateus on Pico and check the village Francisco is from. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] DNA Question - Match with different surname
Trevor C's questions/statements with response: 1) Y-DNA goes way back. Yes. Father to son. 2) The lack of importance the Azoreans gave to surnames is one way the names can end up being different, at the end of the day. Also, when these Y-DNA markers decided to show up, nations weren't, in general, using surnames. Thus your extended family could have been ascribed different names, in different locales. Well, I don't know if I'd call it lack of importance, but we do jump around with our surnames. And yes, Y-DNA was there long before the use of surnames began somewhere in the Middle Ages, I believe. 3) I have never found a Y-DNA match that matches my surname. Supposedly, my original surname is Fernandes. Doesn't help me when my Y-DNA matches are from1) the US (Weeks) ,2) Canary Islands (Rodriguez), and 3) Georgia, Europe. What's most important for me is that if I get a match, one day, I should be able to trace father after fathers line to them. Yes, and I KNOW I have male cousins not only with the name of Mello, but DeMelo, Rose, Silva, Pine, and I can't remember what else. These men are all genetically Mello but wound up with different surnames. And I'm waiting for 37 or 67 marker matches with someone who is Portuguese. Since my dad is R1b, the lower level (12 and 25 marker) matches will be something like Middle Ages or before. My genealogy doesn't go back that far. When my dad's DNA gets the 37 or 67 marker matches, I should be able to trace father after father to them. (By-the-way, I have turned off my dad's 12 marker matches. Being an R1b, he has s many of them and since he has the most common R1b, these matches are anthropological and I'm more interested in the genealogical). 35 out of 37 is related. A genetic distance of 2: http://goo.gl/Xt61e7 But 23 out of 25 is starting to fall apart. RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] DNA Question - Match with different surname
Elaine I would not get too excited about this match. The two step match means that two of the 37 do not match so this is more of an anthropological match. In other words the common ancestor could be more than 24 generations back. The more step difference the further back you go. I believe at 2 steps there is some connection. I also have 3 matches with the same surname one at 0 steps (both from same Generation),one at 1 step, 1 at 2 steps (and this is the one I believe we are descended from so I am still scratching my head). Maybe because one tested is Generation 8 and the other Generation 9??? Nonetheless, I am also trying to figure out why this different surname tested at 2 steps??
