[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Azores history TV spots

Thanks for sharing this. I watched a few (until my computer froze) . Too
bad they don't have titles under each video so you know which islands they
are featuring. I wanted to mostly go through the Sao Miguel ones.

[AZORES-Genealogy] How to Make a Good Genealogy Post

2013-12-02 Thread Cheri Mello
With so many new people lately, now might be a good time to go over this.

Here is a good way to make a post that will get responses. Notice the
first thing I did. The subject is "How to Make a Good Genealogy Post" and
notice that I basically restated that in the body. The subject is just an
eye catcher to make people open and read your post. If you don't restate
it, they don't think to go back to subject and look. They just think you
make no sense.

In trying to connect with an ancestor, I suggest the surname, location, and
dates. Mello, Ribeira das Tainhas, Sao Miguel island, 1880s-1900. Please
put the island. Do you know how many Santo Antonios, Santo Amaros,
Ribeirinha, there are in the Azores? I also suggest you put what you have
done. If you have done census work, say so. That way no one duplicates
your work. When people find out that they've duplicated what you've
already done, they are less likely to help you in the future.

In record translations, try a subject such as Baptism, Angra, Terceira,
1873. Even if someone can't translate, they may start watching that thread
becasue they have ancestors in Angra, Terceira in the 1870s. Also give the
link to the record and state where it is (left, or left top if there are 2
on the page).

Hope this helps streamline things a bit and gets people more responses!

2013-12-02 Thread Cheri Mello
Ricardo C,

An extended family member is a collateral relative. Not a direct ancestor.

Direct: Parents, grandparents, great grands (doesn't matter how many
greats).

Extended or collateral: Aunts & uncles, cousins, great aunts & great
uncles. Basically, the siblings of your direct ancestors.

Here's the definition from Dick Eastman's Encyclopedia of Genealogy:

I've been watching these short Azorean history programs from Portuguese TV

interesting.

E,

what do you mean by Extended family? I tracked my Chaves line, at least
back to 1840's, its a prediction based on the names and generations I
already have, and still Chaves. That doesn't mean it couldn't end in Cabral
one day! After all, Captain Goncalo Velho Cabral was one of the first in
the island!

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Stowaways

2013-12-02 Thread Kawika322
>From what I have researched of Passengers traveling from either Madeira or
the Azores to Hawaii, there are instances of "stowaways" listed on the
regular passenger manifests. However, It seems to be more likely that these
individuals or families were accounted for and known to be aboard the ship,
but were without the proper paperwork (e.g. passport documents etc.) and
were therefore deemed "Clandestino" literally meaning stowaway.

I have a relative who falls under that category. He was from Madeira and
was was listed on the passenger ship list like everyone else, however like
many on the same page of the list it states he is a Clandestino. To double
check idea that he did not have the proper paperwork, I went to the Arquivo
Madeira website, and sure enough he does not show up on any of the searches
for passports.

Maybe someone could clarify if Clandestino had a different meaning in these
cases.

As half-descended from Azoreans, it is important to keep in mind not only
the mixed nature of the population of the Azores, but of larger Europe, as
well. I came up as 92% French and Orcadian, as well, with 7%

BUT, I also know that there was a da Rosa, in my Azorean family (potential
pointer to Flemish heritage), as well as the fact half of my Azorean half is
from Capelas, and Ajuda de Bratanha before that. I have to admit some of
them look a little French.

On my mother's side, a portion of her English ancestors were Normans, who
many French people will tell you are not actually French and were
Danish/Viking, although the intermarried and blended, as well.

Just some things to keep in mind. Happy researching, Group, and I can't

[AZORES-Genealogy] DNA: Identity By Descent (IBD)

2013-12-02 Thread Cheri Mello
Here's a blog discussing Identity By Descent (IBD) with illustrations:
http://goo.gl/KlKFZ6

Is it kind of complicated and confusing? Probably is. Read it anyway.
The next time I post something about IBD, it will make a little more
sense. And by the 10th time I post something about IBD, it will be making
enough sense that you can follow it. You just need to get your feet wet.

Now, in addition to learning Wilma Flintstone's maiden name, you've also
learned something about DNA. :)

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Genealogy Software to make a Gedcom

2013-12-02 Thread Cheri Mello
I just checked my other email (where I get all the sales promotions) and I
saw this:

RootsMagic is on sale for $20 includes the printed user's guide. Offer
good through Dec. 30th.
http://www.rootsmagic.com/holidayoffer/

Legacy's newsletter did not announce a holiday sale, but said their new 8.0
was out for $30 (download only). Book and software is $40.
http://www.legacyfamilytreestore.com/SearchResults.asp?Cat=1

Legacy usually has a sale.

The Master Genealogist (TMG) used to have a sale at the end of the year but
they have not done that in the last 2 or so years.

I don't think Family Tree Maker (FTM) has any kind of sale.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Genealogy Software to make a Gedcom

2013-12-02 Thread Cheri Mello
Tony,

We discuss genealogy software a few times a year. Some people get a new
computer and get new software. Some people outgrow their software.
Sometimes, their software gets a new version that the person simply cannot
stand. So they post to the list.

Now is a good time to discuss software because many of the companies will
have a sale for Christmas.

I was pretty tired last night and just hunted up the link from a previous
post.

Having your tree on Ancestry is great because it can be accessed anywhere.
I made a fake tree on Ancestry just to play around with it. And to see
what it would do when I entered Fred Flintstone and Wilma Slaghoople, two
fictional characters.

I'd strongly suggest you have a program on your computer that can do way
more for you than Ancestry can. Ancestry is very, very limited. The stand
alone genealogy programs can do much more for you. You can store your back
up on a flash/thumb/USB drive, up in the cloud (Dropbox, Carbonite,
whatever), and you can create a Gedcom and upload it to Ancestry as well.

If you are a PC, play around with 3 of the big 4 (Legacy, RootsMagic, and
The Master Genealogist; Family Tree Maker doesn't have a trial version to
play with) and see if you like them. Go to your local Family History
Center or genealogy society and find someone with Family Tree Maker. It's
published by Ancestry and will link and upload directly to Ancestry (or so
I understand).

If you like Legacy, RootsMagic, or The Master Genealogist, subscribe to
their newsletters. They will announce their holiday sales.

Thank you John,

appreciate your assistance, if I find myself stuck somewhere I will let you
know. My intention in this post was to find someone researching Resendes as
well, I guess not. I found my great grandfather already, born 1900. I am
waiting to see what is wrong with some periods prior 1900 on CCA that are
unavailable for at least 3 weeks, producing 404 server errors. Hopefully
will be fixed and I will keep tracking Resendes.

Hi Pam,

I don't at all! Pat to Georgia goes a long way hehe! It was my Dad's fault
as well hehe! for almost 2 years lead me to think my Bisavo was born in Rib
Grande, actually he lived there, but only a few weeks ago my Dad told me
that he was born in Santo Antonio. Before CCA started publishing the books
online I spent some considerable time reading "INLOCO" at Ponta Delgada. I
believe I will be there soon again because Santa Maria, my main line of
research, will take some time. I sent an email to CCA about this, lets see
what they say!

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Genealogy Software to make a Gedcom

2013-12-02 Thread Anthony Soares
Thank you Cheri,
For all others please disregard as I found a post by Cheri explaining how
to do it on Ancestry. Mine now uploaded to FTDNA. Not much info yet on
Azores side though.
Obrigado Tony

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Tavares / Resendes (Santo Antonio Alem Capelas)

2013-12-02 Thread João Ventura
This is why I got a copy of my father's birth certificate, even though he's
still alive. Also got my parents marriage certificate. Now I'm sure I'm a
'filho legitimo' :) Can't be too sure who to trust in this day and age.

And yes, I'm joking. Except I really do have those certificates, because
I'm running a fact-based operation on my DB. I even have my own marriage
certificate on file, even though I clearly remember the event.
