2014-03-29 Thread Maria Lima
Thanks for that explanation ; yes I did read your earlier post about the out
of Africa theory. Paul is it for his family except for his one cousin who is
7 years older. Yes, I have gone back on his other lines so I'll. Look for the
summer sale and do the Autosomal DNA. Thank you Cheri.

Yeah, math teacher. With over 1200 readers, some experienced and know what
you meant and some are brand new to genealogy, well, I just don't want people
to take things as the gospel truth.

The information you provided is your husband's strict maternal line. All
women all the way back to the woman in question.

 2 strategies for this line.
 1) mtDNA testing. This focuses on this one line ONLY. HOWEVER, unless there
happens to be a rare mutation, the results are generally anthropological in
nature. By that, I mean you get a lot of the out of Africa theory. I made
an post earlier today about mtDNA testing in regards to the current sale.

 2) Autosomal DNA (Family Finder) testing. This focuses on ALL of your
husband's lines going back about 200 years from his birth. If you have most
of his lines documented except this Luzia de Jesus Correia line, then this
test will work for you. If your husband's mother or grandmother is alive, it
would be better to test the oldest one (test grandma if she is alive. If
not, test mom if she is alive. If not, test hubby).

You can do both. You can order the mtDNA with this current sale (but don't
hope for a genealogy match) and wait for the Sizzling Summer Sale around
June/July. Family Finder won't be on sale (price is $99 USD + postage), but
the last 2 sales they have offered a $100 gift card to www.Restaurant.com
(good for U.S. restaurants - smaller mom-and-pop types, not big chain
restaurants) with the purchase of a Family Finder test.

Hi  Margaret;

Thanks for helping me once again. I noticed that the Jacintho Jose and Bento
(?) were the standard witnesses at the 4 baptisms on that page and when I
was looking in the Sao Sebastao records, the same pattern existed in that two
witnesses seemed to be the same over and over- at least on the number pages
that I read.

Could it be that witnesses gave or suggested a name for the child and that
they were prominent people in the parish. Or perhaps they were affiliated with
the parish by volunteering at the chapel or whenever the priest needed help or
maybe they lived close to the church and were present at each of these
baptisms.(!). Lots of suppositions.
I wonder if these babies were just a day or two old. Doug brought up a good
point- in that you can't tell the difference in a baby that's just a couple of
days old.

My husband wondered if these babies were left at the Roda by a mother from
another town (or parish) other than their own. In a few cases I noticed they
were given to people from other parishes. The Camera or board that ordered the
child to be given to someone must have acted quickly and they must have had a
list of people waiting. (Maybe someone on the list has knowledge on this)

I started looking for the marriage of the couple that raised her last night
(late) and very early this morning because I'm itching to find SOME clue but I
have an all day event today and alas, I have to wait till tomorrow to pursue
this quest. Isn't that funny how we can't wait to find these ancestors?

One thing you might be able to do, if she had any daughters, and if
these daughters had any daughters who are living to this day, is get the
mt-DNA test and maybe somehow, someone in the future will match and you
can find that one maternal line.
Also, the Family Finder test will register her DNA, but as Cheri has
pointed out many times, it will take time to figure out relatives you
are getting from her unknown parents.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Luiza de Jesus of Pais incognito

2014-03-29 Thread Margaret Vicente
Maria,

Luisa was left at the roda da Misericordia this would be in the Hospital
of Santa Casa da Misericordia of S. Jose.

The witness selection by the priest if an important person were present at
the time of the baptism their name/status would lend statust/honour to the
document. Where you see the same name most often that would be because
they were assisting the priest during baptisms on a regular basis to act as
witnesses.

The name giving is a guess at this point but knowing they lived in close
community, it could be anyone handling that particular child.

The situation was very serious where the babies and toddlers were being
abandoned with those lucky enough to make it through living on the streets.
They were so many that people regarded them they were trampled to death by
horses, carriages and other animal driven carts. The City then passed a
law to penalize and fine anyone who accidentally may cause harm to the
children. Secondly they started by opening houses to take them in. For
the babies they set up the rodas for anonymity to prevent abandonment.
The Camara City Hall enlisted families to foster the children. After a
while the foster parents for Ponta Delgada were over capacity they enlisted
out of town families. These people were nursing women for babies and other
women for older children, widows especially since this would be their only
source of income, who would raise the children for the City. Many of these
children only chance of survival was the surety that if they died there
would be no money coming in for the families that foster parented them.
Many of these children would be given the surname Camara for they were
their ward. This situation was not endemic to the islands; it was seen
throughout most European countries, England, France etc.

Few families could afford to send their pregnant daughter to a far away
relative but in most cases these children would be from the same town. We
also should take into account the timeline of each occurrence and learn the
history of that particular era for that particular place. The islands were
evolving the people in power were building and creating work opportunities
attracting many from all over the islands and the mainland even foreigner
countries.

Please note that the main points above are based on journal records of the
City Hall (Camara) archives of Ponta Delgada.

Hope this helps you have a better idea of how and why these things were.

Take care,

Margaret Vicente

priest needed help or maybe they lived close to the church and were present
at each of these baptisms.(!). Lots of suppositions.
I wonder if these babies were just a day or two old. Doug brought up a
good point- in that you can't tell the difference in a baby that's just a
 couple of days old.

My husband wondered if these babies were left at the Roda by a mother from
another town (or parish) other than their own. In a few cases I noticed
they were given to people from other parishes. The Camera or board that
ordered the child to be given to someone must have acted quickly and they
must have had a list of people waiting. (Maybe someone on the list has
 knowledge on this)

I started looking for the marriage of the couple that raised her last
night (late) and very early this morning because I'm itching to find SOME
clue but I have an all day event today and alas, I have to wait till
tomorrow to pursue this quest. Isn't that funny how we can't wait to find
 these ancestors?

[AZORES-Genealogy] Marriage records; where the banns were read

2014-03-29 Thread climbatree2
Good day everyone. I have been extracting the records from Ribeira Seca,
Sao Jorge. I know how to pull the basic information out of the records,
but really don't read Portuguese.

My question RE: 1764-1803 Ribeira Seca Marriages #0005, left side, the
banns were read in both the villages of Topo and Norte Grande I believe,
but does not state definitively as to who came from where.

Can someone take a look at this record please, and tell me if I am way out
in left field on this.

Also can someone direct me to where I might find images with translations
of B,M,D records so I can learn to read the records.

Thanks.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Fontes/Soares

2014-03-29 Thread Laura
I am trying to find information about my great grandparents Mary Conceicao
Fontes, and Mariano Soares before they came to the US. Mariano was born
March 4, 1876 in (I think San Miguel) and died Oct 29, l943 in Oakland,
Calif. My great grandmother Mary Conceicao Fontes was born July 5, 1874, (I
think in San Miguel,) and died Sept, 15, 1951 in Oakland, Calif. I know
that they immigrated to San Fransico from Hawaii. My grandmother Laura
Soares Cabral was born in Hawaii in 1998. They had 8 children and lived in
the Oakland bay area after they came here.
I am trying to find any birth, marriage or baptism records for them.
Thanks,

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Fontes/Soares

2014-03-29 Thread Cheri Mello
Laura,

You need to have stuff in Portuguese, not Spanish. So in your genealogy
program, type Sao Miguel or São Miguel. People trying to do a search on
Portuguese research from the island of Sao Miguel won't be typing in
Spanish.

You need the freguesia over there on Sao Miguel. There are about 70
freguesias/villages on Sao Miguel alone. You can't find their marriages or
baptisms until you find their freguesia.

You need to start with their deaths and everything that they did in CA and
HI tracing your way back in time. Where to begin can be found on the
Azores GenWeb here: http://goo.gl/WT5Ra1

IslandRoutes (Portuguese to Hawaii) is also another source:
http://www.yourislandroutes.com/

There are people on this list with Bob de Mello's and Edgar Knowleton's
Immigration to HI books that might be able to do a look up. Those books
contain the freguesia in many cases.

I'm guessing you have a typo on your ancestor's year of 1998. And with
people on this list living in America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the
Azoreswell, when you say they came here this list of 1200 has no idea
what you mean. Since we have a global audience it helps to write that they
came to ___.

Good luck! Hope a Portuguese Hawaiian researcher posts here soon!

 Hi to all,
The surname Soutomaior is in my file. My wife and I both connect to this
family. Calheta, Sao Jorge, and Lisbon, Portugal are the areas they are
found.in my file. I have not pursued much of this line as of now.
