Nancy,

If your Josefa Maria Conceicao was born on the 20th of April in 1721, then you
and I also connect here. Freddy and I have known we're connected for many
years. I also descend through the daughter Josefa Clara.

But, I've never done a DNA test.

Gayle,

Now is a good time to DNA test. There's a sale and I can get you coupon
code for more of a discount. By testing, you can help other researchers too.
You could have the documentation on the branch that another researcher is
missing. After finding out they match you DNA wise, you can work to figure
it all out.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Fixing Error in Tree

2015-12-03 Thread bsei2816
On the baptism, I see the same parent names that you do. Manuel was born
on 3 Oct 1846 and baptized on the 25th of the same month. Parish is, as
you said, Arcanjo São Miguel, Prioral de Villa Franca (of the Villa Franca
priory). Joaquim Ferreira Souto is the priest (Cura). Padrinhos
(godparents) are José dos Santos Tavares, single, parishioner of São Pedro
and Theresa Ludovina, also single, parishioner of this priory. Witnesses
are Manuel Jacinto dos Santos and Antonio Cabral, the caretaker (sacristão)
and bell-ringer (sineiro) of this church.

For Manuel's marriage to Maria: The date is 28 Dec 1873 and the parish is
the same as above but written as "igreja Matriz Prioral de Archanjo de Sam
Miguel, concelho de Villa Franca do Campo, diocese de Angra" I don't know
if this means that in 1846 (the above baptism) Arcanjo Sao Miguel came
under the Priory of Villa Franca, but in this 1873 record it is now the
mother church of the priory; but in any case, we are talking about the same
parish. Manuel Luiz and Maria de Jesus, he is 27 years of age, single,
soldier of the sixth company, infantry battalion number eleven (infantry is
a guess; caçadores literally translates as hunters), stationed in the city
of Ponta Delgada and with the permission of his commander, native and
baptized in this parish, son of Antonio Luiz and Francisca Thomasia,
natives of this parish of Sam Miguel. She is 24 years of age, single,
living with her parents, native, resident, and baptized in this parish of
Sam Miguel, daughter of Manuel da Costa and Claudina Concieção, natives of
this same parish of Sam Miguel. Witnesses are Manuel Jacinto de Andrade
and Antonio de Lima Carvalho.

For Antonio's marriage to Francisca Thomazia: Parish I believe is the same,
this time written as Igreja Prioral de Sam Miguel de Villa Franca do Campo
and the date is 20 April 1835. I think Jose Francisco Tavares de Mello is
a priest that issued some sort of ruling and Jose Francisco Tavares de Lima
is the priest that wrote this record. Witnesses are Marianno José Lopes
and Antonio Nunes Furtado. The first is married and the second is "sui
juris" (single and takes care of himself, I think). Groom is Antonio Luiz,
son of Francisco Luiz and Maria do Rosario. Bride is Fransica Thomazia,
daughter of João de Pimental and Rosa Jacinta, parishioners of the referred
to parish.

I apologize in advance for any errors. This one just interested me because
I've never seen military details as the one marriage record shows.

I see the 1910 census for East Merced with Mary P Edwards, children Joseph
15 yrs, Tony 10 yrs, all b. Portugal and Alameda 3 yrs b California they
arrived in 1905

1920 Maria , son Anthony, daughter Elma

1930- Maria, widowed, son Tony, daughter Elma, and two grand daughters, and
a grandson

1940 Maria, son Tony and three grandaughters

I can find no information for a Tony Edwards with any possible spellings
born on 2 Jun 1902

Tony Thomas Edwards born 13 July 1903 died in Atwater on 17 Nov 1984-
mother's maiden Silveira

That points to this family:

1920 census Merced county shows the family of Frank T (Francisco Tomas
Eduardo) and Mary F Edwards ( Maria Federico de Ceu)- with a 16 yr old
Antone and a 14 yr old Joseph. born Portugal, with many other siblings

This family is all buried at Cavalry Cemetery, Merced

The 1920 census for Merced county shows Mary P Edwards b 1881, widowed,
with son Anthony 19 yrs born Portugal, and daughter Elvira 12yrs. born
California

Jose Valadao Eduardo arrived in Boston aboard the Canopic on 28 Apr 1920.
He was 16 yrs old ,born 25 June 1903 in Fajazinha , Flores to Jose Valdao
Eduardo and Maria Jose Corvelo.

His destination is Oakland, Ca to his uncle , Federico N Corvelo.
Ancestry.com family trees confirm this information with baptism records and
shiplists.

The Joe Valladao in Atwater was born in Flores in 7 Jun 1884/5 and was
married to Maria Souza. Their children, born in Atwater were Jessie b 195,
Walter b 1923 and Edward b 1926

Joe F Valldao doesn't appear on the 1940 census, but his 1942 draft card
places him in Atwater. He died in Stanislaus county in 1972

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Fixing Error in Tree

Joe M. is correct that Manuel's godparent is Theresa Lucianna (not Ludovina
as I wrote). The tail of the "f" in the above line made me think there was
a "d" there instead of a "c".

Bill,

Thanks for the help.

Do you have a theory as to why his military information is in the record?

Was military service a requirement of young people in the Azores? Was there a
draft? very curious.

2015-12-03 Thread brownat68
Thanks again.

I know I have the correct family line now because the Pimentel surname is
showing up finally. My grandfather Furtado went to live with a Pimental family
in Taunton, MA when his mother died in 1931.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Eduardo, born 1879, Flores to Merced, California

2015-12-03 Thread Kawika322
Here appears to be the correct family:

This is a baptismal record for a Jose, born 27 Jun 1903 in Fazajinha to a Jose
Valladao Eduardo and Maria Jose Corvelho. It looks like they might not have
been married based on the record. Record is on right side at bottom of page,
no. 6 and on next page on top left.

Maybe the birthdays of Joseph and Tony were mixed up.
