Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Revoredo marriage record. Alexandre and Maria da conceićao

2016-01-26 Thread Margaret Vicente
Nelia,

According to both records above Francisco is the son of Alexandre da
Camara, baptized in S. Sebastiao, Matriz, Ponta Delgada and of unknown
parents. Fostered City Hall (Camara) children were most often given or
took on the surname "Camara".

The Name Revoredo could be through Francisco's Maternal side or simply
adopted as their very own.

I've been trying to decipher this marriage record. Alexandre's father's
name is Da Camara but Alexandre's last name is Revoredo. As well it states
he and his mother are from esta freguesia. It's written oddly. If you would
be so kind as to help me figure this one out. I would greatly appreciate

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Marriage separation?

2016-01-26 Thread Mark
Cheri,

Please do use these records to let others know that you never know what you
are going to find.

. Below is two links for Emilia and Rufino's exposto, children Henrique &
Jose. What was funny to me is that on these records, Rufino is listed as
"auzente" or "ausente". I am roughly translating that as missing?? Rufino
sure does have a lot of kids for someone who is listed as separated, or
immigrated, or missing.

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-PD-CANDELARIA-B-1880-1889/SMG-PD-CANDELARIA-B-1880-1889_item1/P131.html

I think the only "normal" baptism record I have for a child of Rufino da
Camara and Emilia de Jesus is my great grandfather Manuel dos Santos
Amarante but then again, I'm not sure how "normal" that one is as family
lore goes that he was "adopted by a lady in the Azores named Roza
Ermilinda Amarante" hence my last name Amarantes and not da Camara.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Marriage separation?

2016-01-26 Thread Margaret Vicente
The ceremonial act of the child presentation is being erroneously
interpreted.

Link 1: Henrique is not a child of Rufino. The priest says he named the
child Henrique of incognito parents. The child was presented to him by
Emilia de Jesus wife of Rufino who is away. The presenter of the child
could be the parents or a family member but in this case of parents unknown
perhaps Emilia was caring for the baby at this point.

Link 2: exposto child also presented by Emilia.

It is safe to conclude that either Emilia was the church housekeeper or she
was looking after abandoned babies.

When records say "ausente" it really means not present for this act or in
fact away because they took jobs elsewhere on the island or emigrated.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Flight to SLC Sep 5/Sep 11

2016-01-26 Thread Rosemarie Capodicci
Hi All,

Just for the fun of it, I tried to find out the cheapest flights to Salt
Lake for our conference in Sept.. I can't believe a non-stop flight from
San Jose CA to SLC, round-trip for only $192.20! This is non-stop on either
American or Alaska. I always fly on the Alaska plane, not fancy but it gets
me there and back. Flight is 1 hr 55 min. Last year I paid $252.50 for
round-trip. Flight leaves at 10:40pdt. You have to add the baggage fee of
$25 too each way but still cheap!

Joseph Matos was "baptizado neste dita Matriz." Maria do Amaral viuva de de
Joam da Costa Furtado, sepultado nesta dita Matrix onde a contrahente foi
dezobrigada (feminine). She was disobligated in Santa Cruz. He was
disobligated in Rosario, Lagoa. It does not say where the bride is from. In
my experience, when a person marries a second time, the general practice of
marrying where the bride is from does not apply. She could be from either
parish.

JR, I don't know what disobligated means. Joam da Costa Furtado's death was
in Santa Cruz. If he was disobligated in Rosario could that be a clue to

[AZORES-Genealogy] Help reading record

families were from before coming to Doze Ribeiros. On line 6 (starting at
the top of the page) I see the name Beatriz Goncalves and then I need help
with the rest of the line and continuing to the end, which is line 11.

2016-01-26 Thread JR
He paid his obligation tax or fee at Quaresma-Lent= disobilgated. It was
not Joao that was disobligated but Joseph Matos. I can only assume he is
from Lagoa, which has such a variety of surnames, I could not even guess
where he came from.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Help reading record

2016-01-26 Thread linda
Hi Barb,

I see:

"...fregueses de Sao Pedro do Lugar dos [
-os] com Barbara da Costa f.a de An. Miz Castanho e de sua
m.er M.a da Costa freguezes desa freguezia ..."

Sao Pedro is a parish in Angra. I have ancestors from Doze Ribeiras and
Santa Barbara, and some of those records reference relationships with
parishioners of Sao Pedro, Angra. I have not seen "Sao Pedro do Lugar dos
[???] in my records, and so I don't know whether the phrase here refers to
the location of the church (a different Sao Pedro than the one in Angra,
perhaps), or if it might refer to the location where Beatriz and her
husband were living.

hope that's helpful,

Linda

Very interesting. I guess I didn't realize there were so many and so
frequently!

Thanks!

[AZORES-Genealogy] Revoredo marriage record. Alexandre and Maria da conceićao

2016-01-26 Thread Nelia DiBiase
Hi there,

I sent a previous message and forgot to attach the link! Yikes!

I've been trying to decipher this marriage record. Alexandre's father's name is
Da Camara but Alexandre's last name is Revoredo. As well it states he and his
mother are from esta freguesia. It's written oddly. If you would be so kind as
to help me figure this one out. I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you!

You have it right.

Go find the groom's baptism. It will probably list his grandparents. That
may give you a clue as to where Revoredo came from.
