Would that be Duarte Tavares?. He married Anna de Pimentel who would be his
sister, in Sao Pedro, RS, 17 Nov 1609.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Pedro Coelho and Breatris de Souza

2016-02-14 Thread JR
There is way to go about this even if you never find their marriage.
Beatriz left will as stated on the side margin, with escrivao, "mulher de
Po Coelho Pimentel testamento escrivao Francisco da Costa Morato." So she
was well off and likely from an important family. Not sure if the wills are
on line, but that would one way to find out more.

Next look in Ribeira Grande Estrella if you have not already done so, circa
1623 and back.

I think your Pedro is the son of the father named on the baptism of the
first born Antonio. It states, Pad- "Henrique Tavares, filho de Po Roiz
Home e Margarida Cabeceiras, filha de Antonio Coelho todos desta freg." so
if you look for the baptism of Pedro, born to Antonio Coelho, you will have
match. His sister would be the said Margarida Cabeceiras. In fact, you can
keep going and try to find the baptism of Margarida as well.

Have you checked the godparents for clues? There are some Resendes Coelho

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] help with a Rodrigo Rodriques awkward translation

2016-02-14 Thread MaryAnn Santos
Hi Joe,

You may already have this info but in Chapter 9, Section 5, page 191 of the
copy of RR that I got from NY Public Library Salvador Afonso Pimental and
Maria de Froes have 4 children:

Roque Afonso de Resendes who married Eva Coelho of Nordeste
Clara Afonso who married Gaspar Manuel
Manuel Afonso Caramasel, 3rd Judge of Orfãos in Villa Franca
Unnamed child - of this unidentified child was born: Salvador Resende
Pimental resident in Vila Franca and Estêvão Pimentel de Brito, resident of
Lisbon.

I'm slowly making my way through the descendents of Afonso Lourenço and it
will take me a while to get to page 191 but I thought I'd send this bit
along to you.

I'm having a problem with a sentence in R.R. I'm not sure of the
translation and would love it if someone could help.

Here is the entire Portuguese text followed by my translation with the
area in yellow highlight where the translation is "iffy".

sua nomeação foi feita a 12.7.1492. ('Arquivo dos Açores', Vol. I, página
vem citado no libelo acima referido" R.R., Chapter 9, p 177*

"Afonso Lourenço, whom Frutuoso also called João Afonso Lourenço, but
whose real name is Afonso Lourenço, as he was called in a libel (libelo)
that his grandsom Gaspar Lourenço proposed to his uncle (of Gaspar
Lourneço) Domingos Afonso, a libel (libelo) that was judged in Lisbon
March 17 1558. Afonso Lourenço is also named thus by law (son-in-law)
Tomé Vaz Pacheco in his testament of April 9 1516 in which it says (or he
says) he to be the father-in-law and is already deceased. Afonso
Lourenço came from Portugal to the island of São Miguel, where he was
Procurador do Número (Attorney of Number?). His appointment was made July
12, 1492 *(“Archivo dos Açores”, Vol. 1, page 315)*. According to
Frutuoso he was married to Joana Pimentel or Joana Lourenço Tição, but Dr.
Ernest do Canto says that her name is Branca Gonçalves, and it
actually seems to be that the latter is her real name, that is cited in the
 libel referred to above." R.R., Chapter 9, p 177
 Thanks.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Confirmations

2016-02-14 Thread 'John Raposo' via Azores Genealogy
I have been following this discussion with great interest. Here is what I know
(or think I know):
Angra is a very old Diocese and has had a resident Bishop (who was sometimes
absent) since its creation. Traveling to the other 8 islands, before the modern
age, by boat, across stormy seas was a real obstacle. Confirmations did not
happen on an annual basis.
It might be many years between pastoral visits when the Sacrament was
administered.
My parents (who were from different churches in Bretanha) received confirmation
on the same day in the church in Ajuda, which was not the parish church for
either of them, and despite the fact that my mother was 3 years younger than my
father. The Bishop had not visited in many, many years. Many adults were
confirmed that day because they had been too young to be confirmed when the
Bishop had last made a pastoral visit. And it would be several years before he
made another visit.
Today things are different. Since then, fast boats and air transportation have
made the Bishop's visits more routine. In addition, the Bishop has Vicars on
each island who can administer the Sacrament in his absence and even the parish
priest can be delegated as an extraordinary minister of the Sacrament, and can
administer the Sacrament of Confirmation.
In my own experience in the Diocese of Fall River, the Sacrament used to be
administered every other year by the Bishop. For the last several years, the
Sacrament has been administered yearly, sometimes by the Bishop, sometimes by
his vicar and sometimes by the pastor.
The age for reception of the Sacrament has varied over the years (in my
lifetime) from 12 to 16 years old. The Roman church seems always to have been
ambivalent about when this Sacrament should be confirmed. The Eastern rite has
always been much less ambivalent: the Sacrament of Confirmation is conferred
immediately following Baptism.
It has been an interesting discussion.

I am only researching Sao Jorge. The documents often refer to the Diocese of
Angra. There would be a bishop there unless it was a time between appointments.
