I have them, but it didn't correspond to Joao da Ponte or Rodrigues, so I 
did not think it was them. I have him as Joao de Sousa Bulhao cc Josefa da 
Ponte. It certainly makes Azorean research interesting to say the least.

Miz or what often looks like Mtz is short for Martins. However, it may very 
well be short for Moniz in mainland Portugal or other Islands. I have yet 
to see it represent Moniz on Sao Miguel.

Hi Becky,
I was gone for when you posted this but saved it as I thought it rang a 
bellyou probably know that he was the brother to your husband's 
great-grandmother  Luisa Emilia and my great-grandmother Anna Luisa.  I 
have these notes on him in my program which are family oral tradition (my 
grandfather
's brother's daughter, who lived in the Azores told us this)
  Manuel went to the United States and lived in the Oakland area. He and 
his wife had four children. Manuel caught his wife in infidelity and went 
to the Acores and never came back.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Name Abbreviations

Hi,

 

I have two different results from two sources of Portuguese name lists for
the abbreviation “Miz.” One list says it is “Martins” and one says “Moniz.”
Anybody know which one is correct? The University of Minho database shows it
as “Moniz” in one record and “Martins” in the other. Here is the example
below.
