Thanks for your patient help.  I think you’ve supported the FTDNA
suggestion: Y-DNA 37 is a reasonable place to start for males, coupled with
Family Finder.  Then, as you explained, people can go back and purchase
upgrades as needed/wanted over time - especially when on sale : ).



I did spend more time going through FamilyFinder matches, and found 11
pertinent surname matches leading to the sought after ancestor.  So, in
this instance, probably a lack of direct males testing via Y-DNA.



FYI, suspect a website glitch:  when searching from the main FamilyFinder
Results page, just 2 surname matches were found.  The other matches were
revealed when searching trees attached to individuals within the master
list. (I had saved emails re prior searches and was able to ‘re-find’ the
additional ‘hits’ – this time making a master list of them.)

of an NPE (Non-Paternal Event, but I prefer to call it Not the Parent

Manoel,

The reason I am interested in this couple is because I have a DNA match and
we are trying fill out the family information he had from several years
ago.  He had Francisco Goncalves de Sousa and Beatriz Ferreira and two
children in Rosto de Cao, Sao Roque. We now
have five children.  We also have Francisco and Beatriz' marriage in Sao
Jose, Ponte Delgada, however, no parents were listed.

Your ancestors, Joao Fernandes Pexim and Anna Martins were padrinhos to
their first and fourth children.  I am assuming they may be
relatives.
