Thanks for your patient help. I think you’ve supported the FTDNA suggestion: Y-DNA 37 is a reasonable place to start for males, coupled with Family Finder. Then, as you explained, people can go back and purchase upgrades as needed/wanted over time - especially when on sale : ). I did spend more time going through FamilyFinder matches, and found 11 pertinent surname matches leading to the sought after ancestor. So, in this instance, probably a lack of direct males testing via Y-DNA. FYI, suspect a website glitch: when searching from the main FamilyFinder Results page, just 2 surname matches were found. The other matches were revealed when searching trees attached to individuals within the master list. (I had saved emails re prior searches and was able to ‘re-find’ the additional ‘hits’ – this time making a master list of them.)
