2016-09-04 Thread Walt Teixeira
Christian,

I found a baptism for Francisco in Praia, Baptism records 1826-1833, Image
0084, Top Right, date of birth 1 Nov 1832. Father - Manuel Machado &
Mother - Maria do Rosario. Paternal Grandmother - Rosa Maria - single.
Maternal Grandparents - Francisco Jose Espinola and Maria do Rosario. Is
this the baptism record you have for their son Francisco?

Very well put Cheri. That should help clarify it for a lot of people.
Yes, sometimes they will put sections or areas of the village and sometimes
they will put street names and even path descriptions to describe where the
person resided.

 Hi there,

In the following baptismal record, 9 lines from the top, is an ancestor
of mine named Pastorinho José D'Amorim. I've elsewhere seen him referred to
as Pastor. Translated that means Shepherd according to Google translate.
Would this have been his name or could he have been a pastor of some kind?
I'm guessing no because it's a Catholic island but then did they use that
 word for Catholics there?

hi everyone

thanks for the correction

i found a birth date for francesco on a family tree on ancestry - october 18,
1854

here's his marriage to jacinta de jesus

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-PD-SAOJOSE-C-1870-1879/SMG-PD-SAOJOSE-C-1870-1879_item1/P273.html

may 5 1879

his parents - António Jacintho & Anna Augusta
her parents - Jacinto de Teves & Anna de Jesús

if i'm reading it right he is 30 and she is 24

that would make his birth date around 1840

back searching

thank you

Hi Margaret,

Thank you. That helps a lot. I also spoke to a man from Lisbon whose native
language is Portuguese and he mentioned that Pastor is the word used for a
Pastor and that Pastorinho is a proper and approved name. I'm going to look
for his birth record and see what I can find out.

Many thanks!

Christian,

If I may; Pastor is the name, Pastorinho is the diminuitive of Pastor. It
can be used interchangeably. To be certain which might be the original
name, you will have to look up his birth record.

Pastor as first name is not indicative of the office of herding sheep. And
it definitely has nothing to do with Catholics on the island. It is an old
first name used in the latin countries, in France is common to see Pasteur.

Hope this helps.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Graciosa Confessional Roll abbreviations

2016-09-04 Thread Cheri Mello
Christian,

Let's say you are moving to Omaha, Nebraska. You find an real estate agent
to show you some homes. First he shows you a home in the Conestoga part of
Omaha. Too quaint for your taste. Then he shows you a home in the Deer Park
section of Omaha. Too rustic. Then he shows you one in the Happy Heights
section and you absolutely love it. So you tell all your friends to go to
realtor.com and type in 1234 Happy Dance Rd, Omaha, NE to see your new
home. You didn't tell them 1234 Happy Dance Rd, Happy Heights, NE. And they
aren't going to mail your birthday card to Happy Heights either. They are
going to mail it to Omaha.

So when you are reading the Portuguese records, you will see them sometimes
mention the neighborhood of that freguesia, and sometimes, even the street
name. Feteira is just a neighborhood Luz or Sao Mateus or wherever you were
researching.

Now I have a homework assignment for you. Go here and print out this map of
Graciosa and its 4 freguesias:
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~azrwgw/maps-churches-and-villages/graciosa.html

Memorize that Guadalupe (the freguesia) has a church named Nossa Senhora da
Guadalupe. Luz (the freguesia) has a church named Nossa Senhora da Luz.
Praia (the freguesia) has a church named Sao Mateus. And Santa Cruz (the
freguesia) has church named Santa Cruz.

The Portuguese records are housed by freguesia (villages) just like you
have to search realtor.com by city. Not neighborhood. It's nice to know
(you can put that info in your genealogy program), but you need to register
the event (baptism, marriage, death) by the freguesia it occurred in. If
you are using someone else's tree as a guide and they are doing the Happy
Heights thing, well, that is why you are confused.

Hi Carmen,

I'm seeing mostly the same as what you have, except:

I'm reading Francisco/a, spelled with an "i",

I see "sete" ,7, for the baptism,

and for the second godparent I see Guimar de [Jesus?], "solteiros, tios
maternos" of the child

hope that helps,

:)

Thanks MaryAnn!

That book is available via Google Books too, making it easy to download and
put on a reader. But, being able to access the images directly through the
culturacores site is much better for extracting the images.

thanks again!

"Could an Azorean woman one property at that time in the Azores?"

Yes. I have female relatives from slightly before that time who owned
properties in the same area.

"Second, if she really did own this property, what would have happened to
it when she died? Would their have been some sort of probate process in
the Azores? Would it have passed down to some relative in the Azores? All
her children were in America at the time. It does not look as if anyone
pursued the property by trying to claim rights or trying to sell it."

Generally speaking if there is no will or claim to the property, it will be
seized by the government and resold. If nobody claimed it, there's a decent
chance that's what happened. As to how to go about getting that sort of
information, I don't know. It's possible that the municipal hall in Ribeira
Grande would have those records. I doubt they'd be available online, though.

I didn't find the death for the Antonia/o in 1837. Weird, it says Emilia has a
twin (gemios (sp) which is crossed out). And what looks like obito by the
twin's name. Something is weird with this record.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Graciosa Confessional Roll abbreviations

2016-09-04 Thread Christian Day
p.s. Tammy, if you ever find Manuel (or Manoel) Jose (Joze) Machado around
1800 to 1806 let me know. My ancestry research says he was from Feiteira,
Graciosa but that come up as Feteira, I think, on the Tombo.pt site and I
haven't had much luck. While I know his general info from his son's
baptismal records, I'm not really sure where he's from. Manuel's wife is
Maria do Rozario. If you ever come across them, please let me know.
According to his grandson's baptism, he was apparently was born to an
unknown father and a "Roza Maria."

I also took this image of Manuel's son Francisco's baptism from another
Ancestry user but I haven't gone through to see the original at the Azores
site. However, it seems like Manuel should have been in Sao Mateus or Praia
(which are listed separately on Tombo.pt I think) also though there's
something about Feiteira that the Ancestry user put in and my sense is it's
a mistake.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Making sense of 2 Norte Pequeno Marginal Notations

2016-09-04 Thread Cheri Mello
Antonio's looks like:
Died in the freguesia of Sao Lazaro (church of Sao Lazaro?) of this council
on the day
18 November something register of death number something something
oito page 69 backside, of the book No. 30 ..a bunch of stuff I can't read...
...more stuff I can't read (I'm not an owl that can turn my head sideways)
18 November 1939

I think Antonio died 18 Nov 1939 in Norte Pequeno, which is the Sao Lazaro
church.
