If you looked for a 10 year period and that's the only Alexandrina you've
found who is an exposto, it's her. Plenty of women use the name of the
church as their religious middle name.

Test all 4 grandchildren with Family Finder at FTDNA: https://goo.gl/X0gSGr

The test is $79 + $12.95 S&H. If you can buy all 4 at once, great. If you
need to purchase one at a time, and not knowing how old or what the health
is of her 4 grandchildren, start with the one who is the least healthy.

What a wonderful tribute Susan, to such a kind friend to so many of us.
She helped me as well early on, with generous encouragement to learn to
read records and was always willing to get involved with many obstacles I
shared with her. I so enjoyed meeting her personally and admired her
spirit of grace. She touched many of us with kindness and was truly a
teacher at heart.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Would appreciate some help from the Pros on what to do when you see "de avos ocultos"

2016-09-25 Thread George Sousa
Thank you Cheri. As I suspected the only way to proceed is to use DNA.
Alexandrina da Assunção has four grandchildren that are still with us (two
males and two females) and numerous Great Grandchildren and their
offspring. Who would you recommend be tested and what type of test would
you suggest?

As a bit of an aside, after posting this question I've continued looking
for any Alexandrina born in Santa Maria between 1860 and 1870 who was an
'exposta'. Alexandrina is not a very common name and I have found only
one... baptized on March 17th 1862 in Villa do Porto. The link to the
record is
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMA-VP-ASSUNCAO-B-1860-1864/SMA-VP-ASSUNCAO-B-1860-1864_item1/P88.html.
In this record she is described as "uma crianca do sexo femenino a que dei
o nome de Alexandrina que foi exposta na Roda da Casa da Camara depois da
meia noite, filha de Pais nao sabidos".

Of course there is no way to know from this information that this is the
woman that I'm looking for but now I'm curious to know from others if you
have found orphans who were given a second name based on the name of the
church in which they were baptized. If this is a common practice then
Alexandrina da Assunção may have gotten her second name from "Nossa Senhora
da Assunção", the church in which she was baptized. Again, I know that none
of this proves that this is the lady that I'm looking for but I'm inclined
to think there is a high likelihood that this is her...

Thanks,

George

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Portuguese-African ancestry

2016-09-25 Thread Nelia DiBiase
I've been doing some research on the Portuguese slave trade. My reason for
doing so is because I took a big interest in this as every time I've gone
to either the USA or the Carribean I'm always asked if I'm mixed.

The first time I was asked this question was over 20 years ago in Jamaica
and I was taken aback as I do have green eyes and naturally lighter hair.
I've been told over and over again that I have "black traits". I became
intrigued and tried to find if there was any African in my roots ( haven't
found any as of yet)

Apparently in Madeira there is a greater probability of African DNA and a
small amount in Sao Miguel.

It's a very fascinating subject to me and I have come across some very
prominent Portuguese Moors who contributed greatly to the USA

Hello John, did you find documentation on the country of origin of the
three documented slave ancestors and also which island and freguesia are
those ancestors from if you don't mind I have an interest in the topic.

Thanks for your tribute to Arline, I agree totally, that was very much how she

the records on the microfische! She was so helpful and so organized and
wonderful in transcribing the records and had beautiful, readable handwriting

Alexandrina do Assuncao is the mom. Neither grandparents are known, so
Alexandrina herself was an exposto, foundling, orphaned.

There's no way to verify the family stories from this document. You may be
able to use DNA if you could obtain samples from all the descendants
mentioned in your stories.

The margin on page 2 says Raulino was married to Maria d'Andrade Melo and
he died in this freguesia on 1? May 1931? 1937?

Thanks for the info and links.

(Cross posted again)

Carole M from the Azores list found a discount code for the new book, "The
Family Tree Guide to DNA Testing and Genetic Genealogy" by Blaine T. Bettinger.
If you order from the publisher (link below) and use the discount code
SFTTHOMAS1, you can get the book for $17 USD. Also, I was mistaken on my
original post. The book will sell for $30 USD, but is being sold on Amazon and
elsewhere for the sale price of $20 USD. I guess at some point it will go for
the retail price of $30. This is the paperback price. The Kindle or E-reader
prices are a bit less. Thanks, Carole!

[AZORES-Genealogy] Antonio de Sousa Estrela and Maria Rosa, NS da Estrella RG, SM

2016-09-25 Thread Herb
Recently I acquired the birth record of a great uncle born in Sao Miguel.
He was my grandfather's brother. I was astonished to find their incognito
grandparents listed in the birth record. I have been searching for any
information on their grandparents for over 20 years and all of a sudden I
see them. At first I couldn't believe it, I didn't even realize it at
first. They are listed as Antonio de Sousa Estrela and Maria Rosa. I
have been searching marriage records from the time period of 1837 to 1884
in NS da Estrela Ribeira Grande. Hoping someone has this couple in their
records. One theory is that maybe they married after the birth of my
grandfather and great uncle. I haven't gotten to the Conceicao records yet
or the nearby Sao Pedro records in Ribeira Seca. Thanks.
