Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Hello :) New here and a little lost (Researching husband's family)

2016-12-04 Thread Hughes Roselyn
Hi Samantha,

I'm glad that you are excited, and that I could help. You're welcome.
However, Please, Please, Please, remember that you should try to find the
passport information or other information that will confirm that this
record is correct. You would not want to trace this record and find out
later that this information is not correct. As Linda pointed out you
should look in the passports from Angra. I don't know if you can read the
records, so It would also be great if others would check my translation for
you. Thank you.

Benedicto is the first name and Antonio is the last according to this
record. Do not transpose the names.

Correct, women are usually not documented with a last name. They are
usually the daughter of, wife of, or widow of; but you can actually find on
occasion that a record will show a last name.

As Cheri posted: There's a whole list of how-to on the Azores GenWeb
here: https://goo.gl/xYgVpZ
This is a wonderful site filled with important information for anyone
searching for their Portuguese ancestors. Just ask and their is always
someone on the list that will help if you have a question.

Best Regards, Roselyn

 I'm looking for

 Joachim Benedicto
Born in the Azores (there is no US record as to where) about 1876
 Died in Sacremento on 1/21/1913

 and his wife
 Maria Josephine Lestinho
Born in the Azores (there is no US record as to where) 10/6/1886
 Died in Sacramento on 4/3/1960

They were already married when they left the Azores to travel to
America. They sailed from "St Michaels: on 3/19/1906 on the SS Brooklyn.
There were no other family members with them on the ship that I can see.
All of their children were born in the US.

I've started going through the March 1906 passport records for Ponta
Delgada hoping to find their names. I'll go forward a bit and look at the
whole of March for that year and back to the start of the year.

Joachim may also have had a cousin Maria Correa (Coria, Corea, Cory)
who also came to the US about the same time. She was born in the Azores on
 12/23/1896.

Thank you s much Roselyn. This does indeed look like them.

I'm not familiar with naming conventions in these documents. I'm assuming
that Joaquim's father is Antonio Benedicto yes?

Also, from what I can see women's last names are not generally documented
yes?

Thank you again :)

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Hello :) New here and a little lost (Researching husband's family)

2016-12-04 Thread linda
Hi Samantha,

Assuming the couple that Rose found for you from Santa Lucia, Terceira is
correct, you should try looking at the passports from Angra.

Like Cheri suggested, start from the sailing date and go backwards, and
keep in mind that they might not have been married yet when they got their
passports.

:)

2016-12-04 Thread Rosemarie Capodicci
Samantha, don't be afraid of questions, there is always someone on the list
that will try and give you some help.
Yes, he could have had a surname that he dropped, happened all the time.
It generally was a week to a month before sailing that the passporte is
dated. It could be more but that is just what I've seen with my immigrants.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Help reading two words...

2016-12-04 Thread linda

For the father's occupation, I see "siareiro", a grain grower-- most likely
wheat, I believe. Santa Maria has the driest climate of the islands, and
is the only one that had any significant amount of cereal production.

The paternal grandfather's first name looks like "Simplicio" to me, but
I've never seen that before and don't know if it could be right or not.

hope that helps,

Linda

Hi Rosemary :)

Thanks for the reply and apologies for the questions; I'm so new at this.

Are you saying the Joaquim may have had an additional name (surname) which
he then dropped upon arrival in the US? (I'm familiar with the name
change/anglicization of names - my husband's German side is another
challenge lol)?

Also, a general question. Does anyone know about how long before boarding
the ship a person would be registered for their passports? Days, weeks,
years?

Many thanks

 Hi all

I'm building my husband's family tree on ancestry.com. His maternal
grand parents arrived in the US from the Azores in 1908. I have the ship
name and passenger list from Ellis Island but I'm struggling to work out
how to get more information about them from the Azores.

Currently I'm slowly looking through the passports but I don't even

 I've
also joined http://www.portugueseancestry.com/ as it seems one of the
family trees there has the surnames involved (just waiting on my login

Any other suggestions for research will be most gratefully appreciated.
All I have are the grandparents birth dates (no specific location in the

ancestry.com DNA test but, it seems, without more information I can't
really start researching the Azores matches.

 Many thanks

The baptism 12 Jul 1781 could be the Francisca you are looking for.

I do not think the last record is relevant to your search. (re I wonder if this

You won't be able to determine the father unless a record shows it. It
would have to be reconciliation record that specifies the father. However,
you should keep this record in case it better helps to ascertain the
identify the parents of Francisca.

It might be better if you looked for the marriage the Francisco de Medeiros

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Hello :) New here and a little lost (Researching husband's family)

2016-12-04 Thread Samantha B
Hi Becky and Cheri

I'm looking for

Joachim Benedicto
Born in the Azores (there is no US record as to where) about 1876
Died in Sacremento on 1/21/1913

and his wife
Maria Josephine Lestinho
Born in the Azores (there is no US record as to where) 10/6/1886
Died in Sacramento on 4/3/1960

They were already married when they left the Azores to travel to America.
They sailed from "St Michaels: on 3/19/1906 on the SS Brooklyn. There were
no other family members with them on the ship that I can see. All of their
children were born in the US.

I've started going through the March 1906 passport records for Ponta
Delgada hoping to find their names. I'll go forward a bit and look at the
whole of March for that year and back to the start of the year.

Joachim may also have had a cousin Maria Correa (Coria, Corea, Cory) who
also came to the US about the same time. She was born in the Azores on
12/23/1896.

Regards
Samantha

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Hello :) New here and a little lost (Researching husband's family)

2016-12-04 Thread Cheri Mello
Samantha,

You are not ready to start researching in the Azores. You need to do more
work in the U.S. first. It would be similar to someone posting that their
ancestors came from America to England, yet they can't even provide the
state in America.

There's a whole list of how-to on the Azores GenWeb here:
https://goo.gl/xYgVpZ

As for the passenger list, it should state which of the 3 ports the ship
sailed from. When I search the Azorean passaportes, I start searching there
on the date the ship arrived in America (yeah, I know the ship didn't get
to America in 1 day, but I don't want to miss them either) and I go back
about a couple of months.

Good luck,

 Yes, there
is a problem. Maria is not to be found on the prescribed
date of Nov 30- 1793. And her parents are not in the
expected period. Suggest you look in Povoacao, then
Nordestinho and Achada. Jose de Aguiar is from Achada and
married in Nordestinho. But frankly, I suspect error on part
