Most of all I would not want to jeopardize access to the records for

2017-03-30 Thread 'Caroline Gomes' via Azores Genealogy
Here is an update to the search for Manuel Enos Gomes:

DOB: 03 October 1876

Baptized: 15 October 1876

Parish of: Santa Luzia, Angra do Heroísmo, Terceira

Son of:

Theotónio Ignácio Gomes

Luzia da Conceição

Paternal grandparents:

Ignácio José Gomes

Thomázia Victorina

Maternal grandparents:

Francisco de Souza

Josefa da Conceição

A brother of Manuel, also named Theotónio Ignácio Gomes, also came to the
USA in 1906 and it looks like he went back to Terceira, married and came
back with his wife in 1910. With help, I was able to find Theotónio's
passport record for 1906 but still not able to locate Manuel's.

The search continues...

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Sao Jorge Marriage Database

2017-03-30 Thread 'Jeremy G. B-C' via Azores Genealogy
There would be no copyright infringement!! AND this has nothing to do with the
CCA. When you have offered to help with indexing and have been turned down it
sounds like they are turning you down from hosting the index in a professional
manor.
This would be an index private persons put together for personal use. Also the
info is merely being extracted from the records, and I am not copying any
digital images which would be an offense.
Whose to say I am getting this from the CCA? What is the CCA? I could be
spending hours on LDS MICROFILM - don't assume I am not. I am making a PERSONAL
index. This index will NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES BE PUT ONLINE. It will
merely be made by me for personal use, and others will make their indexes for
personal use, and we will join them, and give them out to people at our
"prerogative."
As for Rosemarie's point about the older records being harder - that is valid,
espescially with all the abreviations, but that just means we have to take our
time to get it right.,

Any guidelines?
Leave out the de, da, do, etc?Use the most current spelling of the name (i.e.
Joaquim vs Joachim)?Place spaces between the date (12 Sep 1899 vs. 12Sep1899).

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Sao Jorge Marriage Database

2017-03-30 Thread Cheri Mello
You guys need to STOP. It's not that I'm trying to rain your parade, but
there's problems.

First, whenever the CCA was approached about helping to index, we were
always turned down. ALWAYS. They don't say why. Just a no thank you. I've
thought about it. And I made up the following reasons why we are rebuffed:
1) They aren't in control of the project. 2) They have a bunch of
non-native speakers doing this. 3) There's really no cross-checking.

I could solve #2 & #3 for them. Do it like FamilySearch does. Two people
independently index the same set of records. Someone compares the records
to make sure they are extracted the same. If they are not the same, it goes
to a 3rd person (who should be a native speaker in my opinion).

2nd Problem. There's NO standard. You MUST set a standard and the CCA has
to agree to it. You don't even have freguesia spelled right! The dates most
likely need to be in European format and most likely need to be with
Portuguese abbreviations for the months. The names must be in modern
Portuguese (Ana, not Anna). And there needs to be a rule for d', de, da,
do. You are doing this from a completely egocentric, American point of
view. This is exactly why they don't want our help.

3rd Problem: You DO NOT have permission from the CCA to do this. "It's on
the Internet and it's free" may not apply in a European court. Would they
go after you? I don't know. Could they take down the whole site so no one
has access to it? Sure they could. Do you want that on your shoulders?

So, do not do this. Like I said, I'm not raining on your parade. Things are
done differently over there.

If you can figure out a way to make a proposal to them, they can read it.
Maybe they will respond back.

Please do not jeopardize the records for all of us. Do NOT do with without
the OK from the CCA.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Sao Jorge Marriage Database

2017-03-30 Thread Rosemarie Capodicci
Jeremy, the 1900 to 1911 records are beautiful and no abbreviations. When
you get back to the 1600 & 1700's you are talking about many abbreviations,
bleedover from the previous page and horrible handwriting. It would have to
be someone who was very familier with all of that to even try to extract
the info. On top of that I think that you have to have permission from the
Azores Govt. You couldn't do it for sale just maybe for personal use. I
think that the Gov't did the one for Terceira. Lots of questions on this.

Don, I originally bought the to books from a bookseller in Lisbon. My books
do not have any 'sellers' stamp and I can't remember who I bought them
from. You can try to Google the title: Notas Historicas, Estudos Ssobre O
Concelho da Calheta (S. Jorge) by Artu Teodoro de Matos. Published by the
Universidade dos Acores. So maybe you can email the Archives an see if they
have an anwer or the University. The books are very thick, about 3 inches
and come with every other page sealed together, in other words I had to sit
there with a knife and open up every other page! Wish I could be more
helpful.

Jeremy,

Any guidelines?

Leave out the de, da, do, etc?
Use the most current spelling of the name (i.e. Joaquim vs Joachim)?
Place spaces between the date (12 Sep 1899 vs. 12Sep1899).

You rock!

Nancy, There is a Joao Dias Teixeira in the index with about 5 or 6
references. I looked up one and he is married to an Ines Lourenco, that's
not to say he didn't marry your girl later (or before!). I don't have time
to look at the rest right now, I'm off to work at my volunteer job in a
few! When I come back this afternoon, I'll look the rest of the references
up and let you know what is there.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Francisco Garcia Andrade

2017-03-30 Thread Cheri Mello
You'll want to use the modern spelling of "Faial."

You probably won't find much in the U.S. on a man who lived there from 1900
to 1908-1909. You might find him in city directories, listed on his
children's baptisms, or in court records if he wound up in court. It's
probably too short of a time period to find out very much on him.
Good luck,

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Searching for grandma Cabral, Lagoa Sao Miguel

2017-03-30 Thread Cheri Mello
Olivia,

The whole reason I'm against people stating the relationship of their
ancestors is: 1) That's your special name for her. Only a select group of
people get to call her grandma (or the select group that get to call dad
"dad" or mom "mom."). 2) Also, that's strictly the relationship to you. She
could be someone's aunt, 1st cousin once removed, etc. We can't look up
"grandma" in our genealogy programs. Or 1st cousin once removed. We can run
reports and find all the grandchildren or 1st cousins, but we can't look
them up that way.

You need to create a paper trail for her in the United States. That should
cover "immigration, etc." So follow the suggestions listed in this how-to:
https://goo.gl/vOijK0

However, you won't be able to search by "grandma." You have to use her real
name.
Good luck,

Born in Praia do Norte , Fayal in 1873. He married Maria Filomena Cabral in
