Maria do Coração de Jesus (heart of Jesus). The dates are correct, but
genealogy format is born 25 Nov 1850 and baptized 8 Dec 1850.

2017-09-02 Thread Cheri Mello

Today, Roberta Estes blogged about what happened with Hurricane Harvey and
some FTDNA employees. There's a photo of one employee's home.

Bennett Greenspan and Max Blankfeld, the founders of FTDNA are not only
donating part of the proceeds for September sales to Hurricane Harvey
victims. They are matching dollar for dollar any donations directly made to
a special fund that will benefit FTDNA employees who were affected by
Hurricane Harvey. It is through You Caring and is explained below in

Ally, Nah, I think I was more shocked than anything. If I had a minute it
would have dawned on me who you were, but with everything that goes on at a
conference, I don't have a whole lot of time to think about it!

We're aiming for Spring 2019 (18 months). The Salt Lake Institute of
Genealogy (SLIG) will have a Portuguese course (mainly paleography and
handwriting) in January 2018. More info here: https://goo.gl/HqAqwW

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Baptism Help

2017-09-02 Thread JR
Not bad. Born April 29- 1848, not 20th.

Padrinho is Jacintho Rapozo Borges; Witnesses- Manoel da Silva, sachristao
(priest's helper) and same Jacintho Rapozo Borges. the re is no godmother
listed. Notice that bride and groom are form different parishes. Both Relva
and Arrifes adjoin Ponta Delgad are today like suburbs of Ponta Delgada. In
fact, the airport is located in Relva on the border with Ponta Delgada.

so good to be able to reconnect with those who attended the first
conference, way back when. A note of laughter --- Cheri has worked with me
over the years, since the first few conferences. She hasn't seen me in a

she was totally clueless who I was. She read my name tag, and we both got

Re: Re.: [AZORES-Genealogy] Menezes genealogy, Sao Miguel

2017-09-02 Thread kerrysullivan67
An update here - I have located one of the sisters that I mentioned below.
Maria Conceicas married Charles Mello and also, along with her sister
Mercedes, moved to Cambridge. Mary, as she was known, died in 1973 in
Cambridge, Massachusetts. They had two children, Anthony and Alice. Also,
to add to the Menezes/Ledo children below, I believe there was also a son,
Angelo, who remained in Ribeira Grande. This is according to the
immigration paper that lists the contact remaining in the country of
origin. I have just unearthed a photo of Mercedes' trip to Ribeira Grande
in the 1970s, and it is her with, I believe, Angelo.

Thanks, Kathy! We both had so much fun meeting everyone and swapping
stories! Many new DNA cousins were found too, so great! See you in 2019!!

[AZORES-Genealogy] 2017 Azores Genealogy Conference

2017-09-02 Thread Kathy Cardoza
Well, the latest Azores conference concluded yesterday. I attended, and felt
that Cheri Mello and Rosemarie Capodicci did a fabulous job organizing all the
classes and materials. I saw nothing but big smiles on everyone’s faces and
heard many comments about how much was learned from the classes and individual
help folks received. As an added bonus, you get to meet new friends you’ve
shared emails or postings with and, of course, spend time and swap stories with
friends you’ve met before.

Thank you both for all you do to further our Azorean research and for to help
our little community! Your work is very much appreciated!

[AZORES-Genealogy] UPEC Membership records on Azores GenWeb

2017-09-02 Thread Kathy Cardoza
On my recent trip to Salt Lake City’s Family History Library for the Azores
Genealogy Conference, I completed digitizing the remainder of the UPEC
Membership Records. The collection is now complete on the Azores GenWeb site.

If you’re not familiar with these records ….. they are for California ancestors
only. The UPEC is a fraternal society that many of our ancestors joined for the
insurance benefits as well as the socializing with others from their country of
origin. They list men only but mothers, wives, children, etc. may be listed as
their beneficiary. They can be an important resource for finding out the
details of where your ancestor came from. Go here to find out more (you may
want to copy and paste the links):
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~azrwgw/research-aids-a---l/fraternal-societies/

The records are listed here:
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~azrwgw/research-aids-a---l/fraternal-societies/upec-records.html

New records recently added:

San Leandro #55, E. Oakland, Madera, Sonora, Valona, Newcastle, Folsom.
Roseville, Guadalupe, Santa Maria, Crockett, Gilroy, Chico, Palo Alto, Mt.
View, Santa Maria, Newman, Point Loma, San Juan Baptista, Vacaville, Vallejo,
Los Banos, Turlock, Lincoln, Castroville, Atwater, Fort Bragg, Felton, Oakland
#82, Oakley, S. San Francisco, Greenview and Etna, Rodeo, Elmhurst, E. San
Jose, San Luis Obispo, Martinez, and Napa.

Enjoy!
Good luck and happy hunting!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] ftDNA, a class act.

2017-09-02 Thread Cheri Mello
A few FTDNA employees attempted to work from home Monday - Thursday. On
Friday, some of them made it in to the office. There's at least one
employee there now (Saturday), as I'm emailing him, taking care of a couple
of DNA order problems that occurred at the conference here in SLC.

So not only are they donating to help the Hurricane Harvey people, but they
are really dedicated as well! Cheri
