it out. Please thank Suzanne Edvalson for all her work on this project and that

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Dual citizenship

2017-11-18 Thread Cheri Mello
Suzanne C,

This is a genealogy list for researching your ancestors back in time.
However, this topic has come up in the past from genealogists wanting dual
citizenship. I'd search the archive for the rules to obtain Portuguese
citizenship. Some people do need a language test and some need the parent
to have Portuguese citizenship. There are many rules. They were posted
previously. I'd search the archive/web board of this group for "portuguese
citizenship" and if that doesn't turn it up, try "dual citizenship."
Good luck,

My maiden name is DeBettencourt and I have come to realize it's actually de
Bettencourt through my years of research. I have seen many spellings on records
like Cheri mentioned but keep the the original spelling and make a note of the
other spellings in the tree records.
I wonder if there is any connection here to my ancestors.

Hi Pat,

Pretty much what Rosemarie said.
Today most (if not all) famillies use the spelling Bettencourt.
The ways you find it spelled throughout the years in the census or the
church records usually can be justified with the fact that priests often
wrote the names like they heard it. You will find Bettencourt, Betencourt,
Bitancur, etc...
