RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Joao da Souza born 1847, Ponta Delgada (no island specified)

2018-05-04 Thread Aaron Pereira
Hello Peter,

I have some good news. Using the information you provided, I searched Archeevo
, it’s a searchable database of some of the holdings of Azorean Archives-
http://www.arquivos.azores.gov.pt.

What I did is search using Joao’s parents, and although Joao’s particular
record did not come up, his brother’s ( Jose) passport citation did. It
indicated Jose was born in Sao Roque do Rosto de Cao, a parish in the municipal
of Ponta Delgada. From there, it was easy to find Joao’s baptism record. He
was born on May 27th, 1847. Both are nice records, with Joao’s having the 1869
certification. Joao’s mother, Teresa, is from Lajes do Pico, so thats where
the Lagoa confusion arose.

I’m happy for you. Now when you visit the Azores later this year, you’ll have
a deeper appreciation of your ancestors and where they came from. Good luck
with your research and I hope you enjoy your trip.

Here are the links to Jose and Joao’s baptism record: With this information you
can locate records for any other siblings Joao may have had, and his parents
marriage and baptism records.

Joao’s baptism link:

Jose’s baptism link:

Yes, indeed.
My family, as I recognize, from my great grand father, Antonio Carvalho
Noia. He died before I was born. I remember my great grand mother. I met her in
about 1962/3. She died a short time later & her son, Antonio Jr. died a short
time later. My great grand father is # 9 was one of thirteen children according
to the fabulous list you provide. Noia name is first mentioned, I believe, in
the 2nd or 3rd generation? Who carried the Noia name in the De Fraga beginnings?
I still don’t know how the Noia name came about.cliff

2018-05-04 Thread Cheri Mello
Joy,

I don't know what you mean by the register at birth. The Azores uses
baptismal records. There are a few nascimentos for non-Catholics. Those are
online too. Maybe you should provide a link to this document that you speak
of so we can see what you are talking about, as you are not giving us all
the information.

Yes, your researcher translated it wrong. There's no such place as Lagoas
anywhere in the Azores.

When you get "there?" There as in where? The Azores? I don't know what
island you are going to. That question was never answered, so I can't
provide any type of advice.

Thanks again Cheri. I don’t have any baptism details at this stage. As for
Lagoas that was what was on the Register of Birth. Maybe the person
translating this register misspelt it. Do you have any sites I can visit, or
places to visit when I get there for such information? Being such a “common”
name it may prove difficult?
I know he came to Australia in 1869 after “voyaging in the southern waters on a
whaling ship. However at this stage I’m more interested in the Azores area to
look for his family there etc.

I’ll search further over the weekend.

Hi Joy,
Glad you found something. What was your island for the baptism of your Joao?
The district archive of Angra covers all 9 of the Azores islands.
Also, there's no place called "Lagoas" on Pico. There's no place called
"Lagoas" at all in the Azores. There's a Lagoa, but that's over on the island
of Sao Miguel. The only place with an "L" on Pico is Lajes. Hope that is what
you meant. Cheri

I now have a Register of Birth which specifies the name Joao de Sousa born 27

Joy,

There's a Ponta Delgada on Sao Miguel island and another on Flores island.

On both islands, Ponta Delgada can refer to the city itself, or the
county/province.

Since you believe you have the birth date, search the baptisms on line at the
Azores government site, the CCA. Start with the city itself, then move to the
other churches outside the city, but within the council (county/province).

https://tombo.pt/en/d/acores

Pick the island from the left column, then the council of Ponta Delgada, then
start looking for every Joao born on 25 May 1847.
If you need maps as you expand your search, go to the Azores Gen Web here:
