Looks like the records that Aaron found are correct and I can see how they
misspelled Lajes. It definitely looks like Lagoas at first glance.

Most Portuguese in Hawaii came from Sao Miguel island in the Azores (the ship

Please give the full name of the immigrant, approximate age, if he was married

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Origin of surname Noia on Flores

2018-05-06 Thread luiznoia
Antonio was one of six children born to Manuel de Fraga and Maria Pimentel
that I have found. It's a common occurrence for a child to have a different
surname than his father. It may be from his mother's family , or his
father's maternal family.

Hi Joy,

The title of the book explains a lot. "Registration Book MUNICIPALITY of Ponta
Delgada, Azores, Portugal." That would have to be Sao Miguel island. The other
Ponta Delgada on Flores island is not a "municipality" (concelho) but a
freguesia (village) in the concelho of Santa Cruz. It would still be nice to
see a scan of this, just for curiosity sake.

On the island of Sao Miguel, there are 6 Registo Civil (Civil Registry) - what
you could call a town hall. They have records there from about 1915 to the
present. They are not a research facility though. You are in a time period
though that you don't need the Civil Registry. The older records are over at
the Arquivo e Biblioteca. It's located on the top floor. They will sit you down
and put you on the computer to view the records which you can do right now.
Tombo.pt/en Stay in the left column and click on Azores, then Sao Miguel, then
Ponta Delgada, then Rosto de Cao. I think someone said you wanted the Sao Roque
church. So pick that record set.

How to read the records is here: https://goo.gl/4Tzc2i

You can go to the church in Sao Roque and see it. And you can wander the
streets. The chance of finding tombstones are slim to none. After 7 years, the
graves are reused and the bones places in a ossuary. Some older tombstones and
markers exist. Families pay a fee every year to keep family interred. It's very
doubtful to find a family paying for the interment of family from 200 years ago.

You can try www.practiceportuguese.com to
learn some language. There are others out there too. This one is reasonable and
you can sign up for a few months.
