[AZORES-Genealogy] Athayde/Ataíde research
[Changed the subject to not hijack Suzanne’s thread on hiring a genealogist] David — We took it back to the 1600s. I have death records for a husband and wife ~1700 but can't find marraige or birth records. Have not yet attempted dispensations, but that seems to be a long search with low possibility of success. Anyone else researching this line? My 8th great grandparents note from João Ventura: "Pedro Afonso Balieiro (d. 08 Oct 1706 Guadalupe) and Maria Rebelo de Ataíde (d. 20 Apr 1700 Guadalupe) are likely connected to the noble families: their daughter (D. Maria de Ataíde b 29 Sep 1663) uses the title of Dona (D.) in the 1600's; he owned a grave in a chapel." The name line back from me (jumps two maternal twice): John Michael Athayde (b 1977 Houston, TX) William Paul Athayde (b 1949, Oakland, CA) Hubert Paul Athayde (b 1923 Merced, CA) Manuel Correia Athayde (b 1893 Guadalupe) Adelaide Isabel de Athayde do Conde (b 1856 Guadalupe) José Espinola de Ataíde (b 1795 Santa Cruz) Manuel Espínola de Ataíde (b 1749 Santa Cruz) Domingo da Silva de Ataíde (b 1720 Guadalupe) D. Catarina de Ataíde (b 1683 Guadalupe) D. Maria de Ataíde (b 1663 Guadalupe) Maria Rebelo de Ataíde (d 1700 Guadalupe) We did not search church dispensations yet. I was hoping to find someone with some already discovered information before going down that rabbit (and financial) hole. I also researched another line of a nominal cousin in California whose Athayde ancestors were from Gracioça as well, but found no direct connection there. I have those records here if you’re curious.. I’ve found one other researcher with whom I share the 8th great grandparents, but that’s it and she hasn’t gotten any further back either. I’d love to make an actual connection to someone listed in the Nobalario but that may not happen anytime soon. Thank you Doreen. The issue like you state is that my 2xGreatgrandparents went back and forth to Brazil and had children there and also in Tericeirca. Joao Ventura has help me on this family and was able to help me with most of the children earlier and that was born in the Azores, One person death record he was not able to find was my 2xGreatgrandfather Antonio Machado Evangelho. RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Genealogist for hire in the azores
Joao also did a lot of work for me. I plan to use him again for the Passport records. He is accurate, quick and is a great value. When you are first learning you can easily make mistakes. After receiving the information and digital copies of the records with English summary of the facts I went back and located the records for myself. I learned a lot this way and knew that I was not making a mistake. Now I’m beginning to feel a little more comfortable to work on my own (searching and translating). Still need a lot of help so I’m always asking for assistance here. I’m presently working on developing width in my tree (in other words siblings of my relatives or family groups). This helps me find the connection between my DNA matches (aka cousins). Good luck. The people you meet doing this are great people. They are so helpful. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help with translation
Suzanne C, There are 3 records on the link you provided. Can you name your ancestor? Can you pick anything at all out of the record? It burns out the translators when the record is translated and the person writes back, "Oh that ancestor is not mine." So we want to be sure we are translating a record for your ancestor and it's not a wild guess. Suzanne C, Since I don't know if you are a 20 year old with grandparents who were born in the 1930s or if you are an 80 year old with grandparents born in the late 1800s, it's kinda hard to tell you what to do. You can look at the researchers for hire on the Azores GenWeb here: https://goo.gl/nDfVUx Include the names of the ancestors, their birthdates (or approximate), and their birth locations. If you don't have the birth location, most of the researchers won't be able to help you.
