Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Unusual surname help: Minhoto

2019-03-05 Thread Ângela Loura
Minhoto is what people from the Minho region are called.
>From what i checked i think there's no connection between the 2 men you
mention. I found a José Candido Chaves Minhoto, son of Boaventura José de
Chaves & dona Catharina Ignacia Soares, married to dona Joanna Carolina Da
Câmara, daughter of João Bernardo da Câmara Coutinho & dona Maria Thereza
Ferreira. Both him and Heitor are refered in the RR book, but in different
lineages.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Joao Coelho Cabral (Confusing Birth Record) Help Please Santa Maria

2019-03-05 Thread Leonor Bertoni
I am not sure what it meant in the early days but in the early 1960's when
my aunt adopted my cousin (she was her brother's daughter) she had to
"filiar" her, my uncle had to "desfiliar" his daughter. In other words, he
(and his wife) had to give up his rights as parents while my aunt and her
husband had to recognize her as their daughter. This stuck in my head
because I read the word "desfiliar" as "desfilar" which is slang and means
something very different than what my uncle was doing. They could also have
made a mistake and used the wrong word, who knows. In today's dictionary
the meaning is pretty much the same.

*per·fi·lhar* - Conjugar

(*per- + filhar*)
*verbo transitivo*

1. Receber por filho, segundo os preceitos legais. = ADOPTAR, FILHAR, FILIAR

2. Considerar como filho. = ADOPTAR, FILHAR

*fi·li·ar* - Conjugar
(latim *filius, -ii*, filho + *-ar*)
*verbo transitivo*

1. Reconhecer legalmente como filho. = ADOPTAR, FILHAR, PERFILHAR

This one is very confusing. It seems to be saying something about
confirming him being born some thirty years earlier and that the two people
mentioned are his parents. I can read the various dates and the people’s
names. I’m just not sure about the context of it all.

2019-03-05 Thread Ângela Loura
Filiação is not the same as Perfilhação.
Filiação means naming your parents, this expression often appears in forms
we need to fill and name our parents. Perfilhação means that if you were an
exposto your parents later confirmed themselves as your parents, or only
one of them, or in other cases adoption. There's also the Legitimação.

In this case, the priest must have forgotten to write down the baptism in
the book. Many times they wrote down in topics in a small piece of paper
and pass it to the books when they had the time, and sometimes they lost
the little paper. I'm not making this stuff up. Check the recent
book/manual on Portuguese Genealogy "Descubra as suas origens".

It is refered in this record that at the time of the baptism, the priest in
charge "deixou de lansar", which I'm interpreting that the priest simply
didn't recorded the baptism as he was supposed to, and maybe Manuel needed
the papers to get married or buy some land and got a little surprise.

Thanks Margaret and everyone else who contributed to this thread. Sometimes
reading the words doesn’t fully explain the situation. What’s that saying, “it
takes a village”!

Thanks again all,

Hello, Sam.

The record is a 'JUSTIFICATION' for a baptism that missed its recording at the
time of the event for Manuel Coelho Cabral, born in that respective parish on
June 11th 1852, baptized in the same parish on 29th of same month and year.

10th to 8th line from the bottom reads . " . Soares de Figueiredo, que
por lapso deichou de ser Lansado no respectivo Livro de baptismos, filho
legitimo de Manoel Joaquim ...

" Lapso" translates to error, mistake, negligence

{Soares de Figueiredo, that by mistake was not recorded in the respective book
of baptisms...]

Children were baptised after the fact many times. I have one set of parents
that bapized 3 children at the same time! It was more common practice to
baptize within a few weeks or even sooner. Sometimes the child was ill at
birth, premmie or just small, and was baptized by the midwife then at the
church later.
Sometimes, the original book was destroyed and the baptisms had to be
redone before marriage!
