RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Passenger List or documents related to a sailingfrom Faial July 1834

2019-05-01 Thread Margaret Vicente
Hello Michael,

Found in date range: 1836-08-05 to 1839-05-07 - a Manuel Jacinto, 15 years old,
passport # 131. It’s a quick find in the link below.

http://www.arquivos.azores.gov.pt/details?id=1567049=horta|passaportes

to know more go here, left side gives specifics i.e. particulars about him:
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/PASSAPORTES-FAL-1836-1839/PASSAPORTES-FAL-1836-1839_item1/P70.html

The record does not contain name of parents but bottom right corner has the
signature and name of the person who was taking Manuel Jacinto; Antonio Ramos
da Silveira Coutinho, who late became Horta’s County Prosecutor.

This should help you narrow down his birth date, so you can go try find his
birth record in Pico.

Best,
Margaret

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Passenger List or documents related to a
sailingfrom Faial July 1834

Hi, I'm hoping someone can give me some guidance. Unfortunately I only speak
English, so researching online public domain in the Azores is not possible. I
believe that my great great grandfather, Manuel Jacinto (born on Pico and son
of Manuel Jacinto Avila) arrived in Trinidad on 15 July 1834 on a British
Schooner, "The Watchful" from Faial. The ship contained indentured workers for
Trinidad's plantation owners. The results were disastrous for all workers and
in 1835 the remaining Portuguese (some later arrived from Madeira) to be
supported by the government and returned to their homelands. My great great
grandfather was 10 years of age. I was hoping to confirm he was one of the
passengers and find out if he was alone or travelling with family.

Public records in Trinidad were destroyed in 1903 in a fire in Government
house. Newspapers in Trinidad only record the number, 44,  passengers, 7 women,
29 men and boys and some children.

Can anyone help?

Regards
Michael Emmett

2019-05-01 Thread Cheri Mello
Hi Michael,

The vast majority of this list speaks only English and many of us did learn
how to "read" the Portuguese records. More like bumble our way through, but
many have learned how and are successful and now help others. Many prefer
researching though Tombo.pt, as it's much easier to navigate than the CCA
itself.

Passaportes leaving from Faial begin in 1836. Your information is 2 years
early.

A list of researchers for hire can be found on the Azores GenWeb below.
Some researchers may not take your case, as some may feel you do not have
enough information. Maybe someone will try with your information and you
may pay them for their research time and they still may not turn up
anything. But if you want to start emailing them, here's the list:

John,
That's WONDERFUL to know.  I  now will request some documents that are "fishing
expeditions" in hopes they are documents for individuals I hope they are.

I recently ordered a plain photocopy of a birth record for the sole purpose
of gathering data. I was charged 2 euros for a plain photocopy which means the
photocopy was just that, not an official vital record. The difference? No seal
and much, much cheaper. For the purposes of researching genealogy I NEVER order
an official vital record, just a plain photocopy. Minus the seal there is no
other difference.

Hi Deb,
You can go to the local office and ask for the copies. I think the fee for each

Cheri,
I don't want to hire someone.  I am wondering if I can go to the appropriate
office and request a copy of records for my great grandparents, for example,
who died after 1911.

My family is primarily from Faial, then Pico. We will be visiting those islands
