David,
I am curious, did your son secure citizenship as a result of your
citizenship or did he have to go through the same process as you did?
Thanks.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Dual Citizenship

2017-01-10 Thread Phil Lopes
I am a grandchild, parents born in US, grandparents in Portugal.

A language test was required, reading, writing, and speaking. I was
required to travel to San Jose State University an official testing center,
to have the language test.

Since, as I said in my previous email I secured citizenship a few years
ago, the requirements may have changed.

Hope this helps.

2017-01-10 Thread Phil Lopes
I secured dual citizenship several years ago and it took 5+ years but the
offer for second generation citizenship was new at the time. It seems the
process now is less time consuming. My major stumbling block was that since
I had lived in three countries, I had to secure police reports from each
which was impossible. The block was only overcome by the Portuguese Consul
General in San Francisco securing a waiver of this requirement for me.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Fwd: Interested in Portuguese citizenship

2015-08-20 Thread Phil Lopes
I received my citizenship about a year ago. I was required to take a
Portuguese exam offered by the University of Lisbon at San Jose State
University. At the time exam was only offered twice a year. Exam took about
three hours and included comprehension, writing, and conversation and cost
about $100.00. My guess is that the ability to speak Portuguese will
continue to be required.

 Good afternoon Ms. MaryAnn Santos,

I hope this e-mail finds you well.

On 29 July an alteration to the Portuguese Nationality Act was approved in
order to consider the grandchildren of Portuguese citizens Portuguese by
origin. In sum, under the newly enacted law, obtaining citizenship depends
on three requirements: (i) knowledge of the Portuguese language; (ii)
regular visits to Portugal; and (iii) the applicant cannot have been found
guilty of a crime with a prison sentence over 3 years.

I attach hereto our Legal News Alert on the new law.

If you feel you meet these requirements, kindly complete the assessment
 form attached hereto.

Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

 Best Regards,

 Lisette

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Seeking Portuguese citizenship

2014-07-07 Thread Phil Lopes
Sam,

Did not keep close track of costs but not counting expenses of trip to
Colombia to try to get police report, I would guess costs were about $500
which was for translation costs, language test fees, and processing fees.
I did not use a lawyer.

This is my answer to another inquiry about the language exam:
Hard to assess difficulty of exam. At the time I spoke my best Brazilian
Portuguese over 25 yrs ago I took a standardized test and scored just below
an educated native speaker. On the test for citizenship which I took last
November I received a score of 85 which barely got me into the top
category, a muito bom. The test took almost three hours and included
written, reading and listening comprehension, and conversing with the test
monitor. When one signs up for the language test (and pay your money) you
will receive a sample test which I found very useful.

You do not have to show connection to all grandparents. The Portuguese
government accepted my connection to my paternal grandfather only who was
born on the mainland. However, interestingly my Portuguese citizenship card
lists my parents who were born in US.

I do not know if one's children can become citizens if you get it through
this process.

Hope this helps.

it entirely written or also spoken?
3. Do all 4 of your grandparents have to have been born in

4. Will this citizenship pass on to your children? (or make it
