Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Avila, Borba, Azevedo, Nunes, Machado from Brazil and Sao Jorge island

2015-02-08 Thread Robin Lebo
I also have ancestors from Sao Jorge. My great grandparents were married in
St.Catharina church, Calheta. There used to be a big family reunion in Gustine
my grandfather and his siblings used to go to. My grand father was George Silva
and his father was Jorge da Silva. Jorge was traveling with cousins who got off
in Brazil. He continued on to San Fran. He married Arminda Aurora Luis. Jorge's
parents were Joao Faustino da Luz, His wife was Maria Inacia da Silviera.
Jorge's three brothers were in Calif eventually. Joao's mother was Isabel
Angelica do Coracao de Jesus. No father has been found yet. Arminda Luis
parents are as follows Manual Luis Sineiro and Maria Isabel Dias. Manual's
father was Luis Jose Fagundes and his wife was Antonia Jaconta.
Still researching the lines but I have been told Avila, Bettencourt, Borba,
Pimental, and a few others are related. I haven't found the connections and my
mother is starting to forget things. If any lines cross drop me a line.

I am Patricia Phillips, and have been trying to make connections pertaining
to my mother’s family heritage. It is difficult to do so because my
grandfather died in 1929, and my mother was only 10 years old.

Her Aunt was Mary Avila (Avilla), who was married to John Borba. In the
History of Stanislaus County book, his last name is listed as Azevedo. I
understand John Borba came to the United States from Brazil. To my
understanding all the children from his marriage are deceased.

My great grandfather was Joseph Machado Avila (Avilla). He was from Sao
Jorge. He married Isabelle Conceicao de Nunes. Their sons with the
exception of one carried the Machado middle name. My Grandfather was George
Machado Avila (Avilla). I shared the Avilla, because the family was uncertain
about the spelling of the last name, and when doing my research, I need both
 names.

My mother is Annabelle Avila (Avilla). She was born on my Great
Grandfather’s ranch in Crows Landing, California. Her name is the
combination of two Avila Aunts: Anna and Belle Avila.

My Grandmother was from Gustine, California, but she was not Portuguese,
therefore, after my Grandfather died in an automobile accident on the Pacheco
Pass, my Grandmother distanced the children and herself from the Avila family.

This may not be helpful to anyone, but I thought I should share this
 information.

 Patricia

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] DNA Relationship of 13 people on list

2014-04-29 Thread Robin Lebo
Sam,

I read this list all the time. I've done my DNA test for the female line but
not family finder yet. My mother is a Silva through her father. She is from
Manteca/Escalon, Calif area. My 2nd great grandmother is Maria Inacia da
Silveira born in 1853 Calheta, Sao Jorge. Her spouse was Joao Faustino de Luz.
Her mother (my 3rd great grandmother) was Marianna Inacia Silveira born Aug 26
1820 Ribeira Seca. Maria's father was Joao Silveira Nunes. Mariana Inacia
Silveira's parents I have listed as Isabel Silveira s. Pedro and Manuel Michado
Mendonca Borba. I don't have birth dates for all the parents or grandparents
yet. I'm a slow reader of the baptism, etc pages. Does any of your Silveira
line have any of these Silveira names listed? I have my family on
tribalpages.com. I don't know how to do Gedcom, post my DNA results, or even
understand them. I saw your post that had Silveira and the correct island so I
thought I would ask. Thanks for your time.

The special is stay 3 nights (at $85 USD + taxes) and get the 4th night free

This would be from Monday, April 14th, through Sunday, April 20th, 2014.
Our conference would run from Tuesday, April 15th through Friday, April
18th. EASTER SUNDAY is April 20th.

So, if we pick the above dates, would it impact our attendance? If you were
to join us, would those dates work for you if you are considering joining us
(we are not going to hold you to it).

The other dates we are thinking of are Tuesday, April 8 through Friday,

special of stay 3 nights and get the 4th night free.

Please keep me posted with what you find on that side of your family. Have not
gotten that far. I have been trying to find out how Joao's son Jorge (my great
grandfather) came to America. I was told he took care of the animals. His boat
arrived in San Francisco in 1898. He went got his new wife and arrived a second
time in 1906 in New Bedford. Might have to let it Go for a while and come back

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] would they?

2012-08-26 Thread Robin Lebo
Michael,

I have a similar situation with my great grandfather. He came here supposedly
in 1898. The only vessel for that year is a schooner from his island Sao Jorge
to Provincetown, Ma. There are names that look like his brothers, but he is now
where on the list. They are all probably related somehow since it is a small
island. The lady in New Bedford, Ma helping me said that not all ships
manifests have been done. We could not find info on the schooner so seeing if
he was crew has not been found either. We checked other records that say he
came here in 1898 but they do not record the actual date or how. We checked the
whale men out of New Bedford he is not there so he did not work in that field.
The search continues. He is found in 1906 when he brought his new bride here.
They went to New Bedford. Trying to find out how long they stayed in New
Bedford and with whom and how they got to California.
He has a common name as well Jorge Faustino da Silva, 1880-1950 son of Joao
Faustino da Luz.
Keep searching it will be found.

then, would they have traveled here together? no matter how much I look I
just can't find her, or him for that matter with anything definitive.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Terceira marriage records... how to find?

2012-06-05 Thread Robin Lebo
 A recommendation;
Joao just finished obtaining records for me as well. The first steps in
breaking through my current brick wall. He found exactly what I requested and
was extremely quick getting my records. I thought it would be slower, like
those of us in Oklahoma.
I got a packet today, but have yet to open my mail. ( Not home long enough. My
son also wrote from boot camp. It's a great day for mail.)
I tried for months to do it myself and got very lost, who went where with what
name.
I highly recommend Joao Ventura.

How does someone in the U.S. go about finding marriage records in the Azores
(specifically Terceira)? The story was always that Avo came over alone after
being married by proxy (1920-1921). I would think that would involve lots of
paperwork but not necessarily church records. I suspect it is just a story
because I've found conflicting information in the Ellis Island database and
 in passenger line records.
Is this the kind of thing you'd need to hire someone (on Terceira) to

Dear Mike,

I went into find a grave and found a Manuel Joseph Pine b 1893, d 1914. His
find a grave number is 88554320. This is at the Holy Ghost Cemetery, Fremont,
Alameda County, California. Plot: Row 18. It says it shares the stone with
Frank. I went to the Frank Pine in the same cemetery, but I could not find
which Frank it was. the Frank Pine listed had others in that area but not the
same plot. I found others, Pine, Joe and Joseph, but none had died before
1920.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Sao Jorge family names

2012-01-21 Thread Robin Lebo
To all,

Talked to my mom about the name issue. She said that Ava Arminda said they
changed their names on purpose. This may not be for every family, but this is
what she was told. They were really poor in the Azores, so when they came to
America they felt rich and they wanted rich names so they changed their names
to be wealthy Americans. They were so very proud to be called Americans. They
kept their heritage but the names were changed. When they went home to visit,
the family in the village expected them to have a festa. The visitor showed
their wealth by paying for the festa. We have pictures of an aunt paying for
her festa. The celebration was a large one.
This is a family story of what was expected. It may not have been that way with
all families but it might explain some of the name issues.
I do not understand it, but I don't know all the issues associated with it
either.
Hope this helps

To family of Enos,

There are quite a few buried outside of Stockton, Ca near Escalon, Ca and
Manteca, Ca. If you go to www.findagrave.com.
Go to cemetery lookup tab. Enter St.John's Catholic Cemetery in the
country:USA, state:Ca, county:San Joaquin. I just entered the last name and
George Enos, John Enos, Maria Enos, Michael Enos to name a few came up. Hope
this helps in your search. The name of the church beside the cemetery is
St.Patricks, Hwy 120, the town is either Escalon or Manteca.

This cemetery has a lot of Portuguese buried there. My grandparents and great

Adair,

This might be a cousin link somehow.
I wish my grandmother had let us meet the family and maybe this would really
not be as tough in trying to find info.
The Cenus records have my great grandparents in the town of San Joaquin in 1920
and 1930. They have my great grandmother's name spelled wrong. They have my
great grandfather and my grandfather's name as Geo Silva. My g uncle is listed
as Willie Silva. Other names are spelled incorrect at that time as well.
My mother Evelyn Catherine Silva was born around 1940 in the Manteca area. She
tells me her grandparents lived out in Merced county, but not specifically
where. They are buried outside of Escalon.
Her father's birth records are from San Rafael. Her father was a topper for one
of the lumber companies when she was a child. Do you have any family that
worked in the lumber industry?
I do know that the Silva side of our family would have an annual reunion in
Gustine every summer. I never attended it though.
I will go through some of my pictures and see if any have Borba for a name. I
use Archives.com, so I have the records I have found attached to the person in
my tree it goes to.
What sites have you used to get information from Sao Jorge? I use a translator
on my phone to translate for me. My husband thinks I am crazy to be searching,
but I am determined to find the line.

Maria,
Thanks for posting the success. It gives me hope in contacting with my family

I, too, have had wonderful success. Our Sao Miguel family emigrated to
Brazil in the early 1900s. Half of the siblings returned to Sao Miguel and
half stayed in Brazil. Through posts and the mention of names and google
searches, I received an email (6 years after the post) from someone in Brazil
claiming to be a cousin. He told me we share the same great-grandparents.
He also asked if I had the copies of birth certificates of his
great-grandparents, he would like to see them. Still a bit skeptical, I sent
them on, after all, what harm could it do, they have been gone for over 50
 years.

He returned my email with a thank you and a photograph of my
great-grandmother. Still, I kept thinking how do I know this is who he
says it is, so I forwarded the picture to our only living grand-daughter,
who confirmed that it was her grandmother!

The cousin in Brazil and I have set up a family tree (through MyHeritage.com)
and it has been wonderful. We have most of the branches from our
great-grandparents put together. Everyone keeps in touch and shares old and
recent pictures. We had two weddings this year, one in Sao Miguel and one in
California. The mothers of the brides are first cousins and had no contact
 with each other previously.

It is amazing to look at our family tree as the branches have reached Rio de
Janeiro in Brazil, California, New Jersey, Toronto, Canada, mainland of
Portugal, and still a branch in Sao Miguel.

Facebook has also made it very easy to keep in touch.

This has been very rewarding and I have received many thank yous from family
 members.

Bottom line, never give up hope. Someone out there is also searching for
your family and they will find you. It is only a matter of time.

I, too, have to thank the Azores Group for all the help and pointers I was
given. You are truly an amazing group of people!

 ANOTHER SUCCESS STORY!
I AM VERY HAPPY TO REPORT THAT I HAVE FOUND MY FATHER'S FIRST FAMILY,
and in less than a month! After having found some very important
documents on Ancestry.com, my real success was through THIS Azores
Genealogy group. E Sharp in California adopted me immediately (See
her entries below.) and provided me with all sorts of leads.

One of these leads was an obit that led me to a woman who turned out
to be the widow of my cousin. This widow then got me to my deceased
cousin's other cousin who turned out to be my half-sister, the only
remaining child from my father's first family. She is still alive and
at 92 is living in MA. Her daughter, my half-niece, contacted me and
we have already established a close bond. After the family circulated
the info among the whole family, I heard from 2 more half-nieces.
Everyone I've heard from has been very gracious, warm and receptive to
the surprise info that I've provided them. (To this point, everyone
thought that my father, their grandfather, had died long ago. They
didn't know about me and his second family.) We have exchanged family
pictures, have seen family resemblances, and have made tentative plans
to visit here in VA and in MA. Everyone wants to keep the new bigger
 family connected.

I continue to be absolutely amazed at how this has worked for me -
first finding out that my father had another family decades before I
was born and then finding the family. I can't say enough good things
about how this Azores genealogy site works! I thank all of you who
have responded with good information. And I can't thank E Sharp
enough for her help with this search. I could never have accomplished
 this without her!

Good luck to all of you in your searches. If there's any way I can
help you, I'd be happy to try. As for me, I'm off to the Azores next
summer to visit a cousin who still lives there!

 Thankfully, and still in shock,
 Lorraine

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] transferring genealogy programs

2011-11-30 Thread Robin Lebo
Reading the posts, another site that I use is TribalPages for keeping a copy of
my family tree. A distant cousin suggested it. I love that I can put notes and
pictures all together for the person. It is free up to a certain point and
after that the annual fee is relatively low compared to ancestry. This is not
for everyone and others connect it with their FB. It is just another tool.
I have all my files saved to a memory stick. So far no compatibility issues
with any computer. I have one I use on trips. I can use it anywhere I go to
save records on a computer. It just makes it easier for me. If I get a new
computer I just open and continue on. I have had no file or program issues yet.
Have never used a Mac. So that might be different.
I have a couple of programs that I use one is Legacy, but I don't really like
it.
A lot of genealogists maybe farther ahead in their knowledge than I am. I just
thought this might help.
Blessings to all on their searches.

I haven't monkeyed around with RootsMagic in a while, but if it can directly
read from FTM, that would better than doing a Gedcom. In RootsMagic, look
under File, then Import. See if it will directly read from FTM.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] (da) Silva, George Faustino, Sao Jorge, Calheta and Luiz(s) from Terciera- California Silvas from Gustine, Merced, Manteca, San Rafael. .

2011-11-21 Thread Robin Lebo
Dear Adair,
My records are limited to what I have found on websites and what I was told
which is not much. I have been searching but there are so many with similar
names.

My great grandmother Arminda Aurora Luiz(s)went through Ellis Island. She
married Jorge Faustino da Silva in the Azores. Sao Jorge, Calheta, Santa
Catherines(?) in 1906, then she came to America. I have not found the records
for Jorge, just his citizenship in Calif. It is under George F Silva in San
Rafael, Ca
My Grandfather, George Faustine Silva was born on Feb 24, 1909 in San Rafael,
Ca. He was a logger above Sonora before becoming a janitor in the Valley. He
had a broken back from falling off the tank house as a kid.
Jorge (George) and Arminda eventually had a small dairy in the Merced area. If
I get that info correct according to my mom. She has talked about other
properties her Uncles had that are now gone. My mother, Evelyn, was baptized,
but the records burned, she had to find the 90 year old priest to confirm it.
That is on record in Chowchilla's Catholic Church. She was born in a barn on
the dairy.
My Great Uncle used to donate the beef for the Manteca Festa years ago. My mom
was raised in Manteca and Stockton and went to St. Mary's high school in
Stockton, Ca. I was born in Stockton, but I grew up in Porterville, Ca.
I was told there used to be a family gathering every year in Gustine. I have
old pictures of relatives but I don't know who they are. I never really talked
to Avo George about his family, never saw cousins. My mom has though. She says
we are related to Silva, Pimentel, Borba, Luis(z), Diaz. They are cousins she
says.
Now I have to put the puzzle together. Hopefully I can find some cousins I
don't know. I have been taking my Grandfather's siblings and trying to get that
info because it is all California. That is why I listed them.
I am starting to chip at the ancestral part that goes back to cousins in New
Bedford Mass and to the islands.
Thanks for the contact,
Robin Lebo
