[AZORES-Genealogy] Help with place of passports

2016-10-07 Thread Steve Wright
I have found the ship (Canopic) manifest for my great-grandmother and my
grandmother. It arrived in Boston, MA on September 16, 1913. Says it
sailed from St. Michaels.

They were from Graciosa. Is it most likely they went to Horta to obtain
passport and sailed to Ponta Delgado and left for states from their.

Any clue on which passport book to look - Horta or Ponta Delgado.

Thank you,

Colleen

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Need help with a birth place

2016-08-03 Thread Steve Wright
Yahoo! Found my grandfather's passport information. It verifies what my
father always said that he was from Sao Mateus, Graciosa! He left from
Angra and came through New York at the age of 11! Settled in Lawrence,
Mass. Doesn't look like he traveled with his parents though - so more
unanswered questions!
His name was not written correctly on ship's manifest which added to
confusion. I have been searching for him for several years. I had records
of him once he was in Massachusetts but not in Azores. So exciting to have
this information.

Thank you Cheri Mello and Richard Pimentel all for your help.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Need help with a birth place

2016-08-03 Thread Steve Wright
It was my mother's DNA. Francisco Sousa Rosa is my father's father.

I found the ship manifest and he is listed as Franco de Sensa Rosa age 11.
When looking at writing, I'm almost sure Sensa is Sousa. He was born Oct.
1887, so age fits. Shows leaving from Terceira. So I will search passports
for Terceira now. Trying to make out other passengers names he may have
traveled with.

If I did my DNA, would it help in showing my father's? My only brother has
passed and no other living males. I see that FTDNA is having a sale now.

So excited to finally find out more about my dads side.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Need help with a birth place

2016-08-03 Thread Steve Wright
I finally found my grandfather, Francisco Sousa Rosa's, Declaration of
Intent for Naturalization in Boston, Massachusetts.
At least, I think it is him. Birthdate and name are correct. He has been
my brickwall for several years.

Form was definitely completed by someone else because his signature does
not match writing on form.

My question is for birthplace it is listed as Fenais, Azores. Has anyone
ever heard of Fenais? Also, on the form it states he immigrated to the
United States from Sul, Azores on the vessel da Maria and arrived at New
York harbor on Oct. 5th, 1899. Also, lists last residence as Said Fenais,
Azores.

Do you think person wrote what they thought they heard? He was 24 at time
of Declaration.

My father always said he was from Graciosa. I'm not so sure because when
visiting Graciosa several years ago, I couldn't find anything. I have also
had Joao Ventura search to no avail. His wife Elvira Cunha was definitely
born there. Have fun most of her records. They married in Massachusetts.

Thank you for any help with my brickwall.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] GRACIOSA researcher's list

Hi Eliseu:

I would like to be added to your Graciosa list. I am researching my
grandparents, Francisco Sousa Rosa and Elvira Bettancourt Cunha. Thanks to
Joao Ventura I have found information for my grandmother Elvira. I have
been to Graciosa several years ago and saw my great grandmother, same name
as grandmother, gravestone in village of Santa Cruz. My grandfather is my
Brick Wall. I even wonder if he was really born there. Both immigrated
to Massachusetts at different times. My great grandmother also immigrated
to States but later went back to Graciosa.

Thanks for adding my email.

How does someone in the U.S. go about finding marriage records in the
Azores (specifically Terceira)? The story was always that Avo came over
alone after being married by proxy (1920-1921). I would think that would
involve lots of paperwork but not necessarily church records. I suspect it
is just a story because I've found conflicting information in the Ellis
Island database and in passenger line records.
Is this the kind of thing you'd need to hire someone (on Terceira) to
research? Has anyone had any success with this?

Thank you in advance for your help and suggestions.

I am up to page 129 of 188, not to shabby for a non reading engineer,
and I will agree that it is a well done unusual book, an easy read, and a
 pleasant read.

I bought the book because my mothers maiden name was LEWIS. Her
grandfather Manuel, my G Grandfather Lewis, also came from FLORES, AZORES
as did the author! The earliest record I have found for my Manuel is as a
member of the crew on the Whaling ship Ocmulgee docked at Edgardtown
Harbor on Martha's Vineyard Island off the Massachusetts coast in the 1860
 census.

Starving for information on the Lewis line, and particularly on the
Island Of Flores Azores and the reviews indicate that the book is an
autobiographical novel, I was sort of hoping, and expecting mention of
family members such as names, ages, locations etc, of siblings,
aunts/uncles nieces/nephews grand parents etc that came and went around
family gatherings etc., would be noted in the book.

Unfortunately, so far, I have not found that is the case. It goes
into detail of a boys dreams, hopes, fears, joys, sorrows, anticipations,
etc, school, teachers, church, the color of the sea, or trees, the moon ,
the sun etc. but not about family or relatives. He mentions his mother and
father often , punishments, encouragements, and difference in approach
between his mother and dad etc. but so far genealogical type of data of
names, relationships, dates or locations are not featured. .

Again, it is a well done unusual book, an easy read, and a pleasant
read. It does what the reviewers have said it does. It provides
documentation and the development of the society at the time as seen
through the eyes of a frank and honest person who lived it and has shared
it. But it would be misleading to hope or anticipate a trove of
 genealogical information.

Thanks for the information. I have just began my research for my
ancestors. I haven't been able to get much information.
So far I know that my grandfather Joseph (Jose) Machado Silva was born
about 1894 on Terceira and from Angra or San Mateus. His parents were
Antonio Machado Silva and Maria Luz. He and my grandmother came to the
United States in 1921.

My grandmother was Maria Augusta Gonsalves Silva born Jan. 14, 1897 in San
Mateus. Her mother's name may have been Maria Clementina.

That is all the information I have right now. I would love to know how I
can find out more. I may be traveling to Teceira in August, 2012. Is it
best to go directly to the churches for information.

I am also told that my grandmother's father may have been left at an
orphanage on a table. Any information about how orphanages were run would
be appreciated.

Thanks again,
