You better have birth certificates of your family that ties all and all

The consulates in USA especially in the East coast of USA are ridiculous
I have a family member that lives in Minnesota and she has to go to
Washington DC when she needs the consulate
She comes often to Massachusetts yet the consulate in Boston WILL NOT
 let her do anything there
She is lucky because she works for an airline and can get flights to

 Tanya S,

The 3 major companies that offer DNA testing for genealogy are Family Tree
DNA (FTDNA), Ancestry.com, and 23 and Me. The Azores DNA project is housed
 at FTDNA.

 1) Ancestry.com: Ancestry started out in the publishing world, with
genealogy books. Then they went digital by scanning and making things
available from your computer with their Ancestry.com (or .ca or or or) web
site. In my opinion, they should have stopped there. Being traded in the
stock market means you have to please your shareholders and make them
money. So they got into DNA testing by buying out other companies to
start. I've watched them as they've basically bumbled their way around
DNA. I've even called them on the phone, with a DNA question. They try to
sell me their World Membership instead and avoided my question. Maybe they
are better now. I haven't called them in a while. However, they used to
offer all types of DNA testing for genealogy. They made an announcement
about a month ago that they are dumping all the DNA samples and results
from Y mtDNA and just staying with autosomal. This is a shame because
some people tested a relative who has died and they are just going to do
away with all that?!?! You can test with Ancestry.com. Just be aware your
results and sample may not be there in a few years. Also, they have no
projects there. I find their help very, very limited.

 2) 23 and Me: They really started out doing stuff for medical reasons.
Anne Wojcicki, one of the founders, is (was?) married to Sergey Brin (one
of the Google guys). Anne had found some medical thing in her family (or
Sergey's family?) and wanted a way to utilize DNA to solve the problem.
The chip that is used for medical DNA has the genealogy stuff on it. So
they offered that too. Most people on 23 and Me don't answer genealogy
requests because they are there for medical. Then the FDA came in around
last November and told 23 and Me that they can't sell the medical part to
the consumer. So currently, they are offering only the genealogy portion
until they can compile with the FDA rules and regulations. So if you test
with 23 and Me, you may wind up with your medical info in the future. Some
people don't want to know that they have the gene for Alzheimer's,
Parkinson's, etc, etc. Other people want to know. There are no projects
there. Most of the help is through their message boards.

 3) Family Tree DNA (FTDNA). This is where the Azores project is held (we
have 713 members in it; 407 have had the Family Finder test run). FTDNA
was founded in 2000 by Bennett Greenspan. He had a genealogy mystery that
could be solved by DNA, just as DNA helped solve the Thomas Jefferson
Sally Hemings question. There wasn't any company out there that could help
a genealogist. So Bennett started FTDNA in 2000 and used the lab at the
University of Arizona (FTDNA built their own lab 2 or 3 years ago and all
tests are now run in-house in Houston, Texas). They are the oldest and
have the largest database for genealogists. They have some big name
geneticists on their advisory board. It's absolutely crazy what us
genealogists have made the geneticists do. We've asked questions and
pushed them into making discoveries that they didn't initially think were
possible. Anyways, Katherine Borges founded the Azores DNA project with
FTDNA around 2004 or 2005. They have projects, message boards, admins, and
customer service to help. They are working on improving their Learning
Center, as they recognize their strength is delivering results but not much
in the way of interpretation or really, really good comparison tools.
Since we've had the Azores project there for about 10 years, you will find
more matches with people of Azorean descent there. Oh, they save your
sample for at least 25 years.

There are other small DNA testing companies too.

Also there are 3 or 4 or 5 types of DNA testing, depending on how you look
 at it.

 1) Y-DNA testing: Only 23 and Me and FTDNA offer this. Y-DNA is taken by
a male and traces his father's father's father's line only. That's the top
of his pedigree chart. Just that one line. So if your maiden is Smith and
you wanted to know about your Smith ancestors, you as a female, would have
to have your brother test or your uncle or male cousin named Smith take the
test for you. Since the Azores are somewhat isolated out there in the
Atlantic, it will take time to get a sample from every family that ever
settled in the Azores (we have about 340 men who have taken a Y-DNA test
who are of Azorean descent). The string of numbers is compared to

The following is from an Azores Government publication concerning the
 Hawaiian migration.

The Portuguese migration to Hawaii was fueled by poor economic
conditions in the mother country, and
particularly in Madeira. The production and export of fine wines had been
for many years the mainstay of the
Madeiran economy. During the 1850’s, however, the vineyards were laid
waste by a blight that crippled the wine
industry for decades. Unemployment and hunger followed the destruction of
 the vineyards. As conditions worsened,
Madeirans looked for a better way of life in Brazil, the United States and
 Hawaii.

During this same period, the Kingdom of Hawaii was in need of laborers for
her sugar plantations. The large scale
cultivation of sugar depended upon a continuous supply of inexpensive
 labor. The demand for plantation
workers increased after Hawaii concluded a Reciprocity Treaty with the
United States in 1876, which facilitated the
exportation of Hawaiian sugar. The dramatic decline of the Hawaiian
population had caused planters and government
officials to look abroad for suitable immigrants to work the land and
increase the population of the Kingdom. Several
thousand Chinese emigrated to Hawaii during the 1860’s and 1870’s. Yet the
 Chinese seldom brought their families,
and distinct cultural differences between the Chinese and other residents
of Hawaii caused many of the latter to
demand an end to the large scale importation of workers from China.

In 1876, *Mr. Jacintho Pereira,* a Portuguese citizen and proprietor of a
successful dry goods store in Honolulu,
came forward with an interesting idea. Pereira suggested that the Hawaiian
 government investigate the possibility of
solving Hawaii’s labor and population problems by encouraging the
immigration of Portuguese from Madeira. The
government contacted *Dr. William Hillebrand* who was living at that time
in Funchal. Hillbrand acted as Hawaii’s
agent, and carried out all of the details required to place the first
contingent of Portuguese immigrants aboard the

 I
have only two more days here. I originally thought I found a picture of it
but now I am thinking that this is a candelaria on another island. I was a
little frustrated as we went through the town, it was not what I expected,
streets very narrow, no where to turn around safely, almost got bit by a
dog, got lost a bit, cars tailing meyikes! can someone please help? I
did notice an old church with no access and looked deserted on the main
road, covered with bushwas that it?

I have church baptism record showing my third grandfathers birth as well as
family names. says they are from nossa senhora de candeias of Candelaria.

I thought the link was for the island of sao miguel.

If any one is familiar with that area please enlighten me. I am stomped.

 thank you,

Yes, the streets are narrow and people can drive closely together.

 Hello all,

I've got a few private emails, so I think it may be better to republish
this post from December 2012, updating it a bit in the process.

Francisco Gomes has published his 'Casais das Flores e do Corvo' book in
e-book format. This book covers ALL the available marriages in the islands
of Flores and Corvo between 1675 and 1911, for a total of 10.247 marriages.
This book is ESSENTIAL to anyone doing research in either of these two
 islands.

You've got a choice of stores, each with it's pros/cons:

 - Amazon (pro: Kindle, con: only Kindle, more expensive $18.44)
 http://www.amazon.com/Casais-Flores-Portuguese-Edition-ebook/dp/B00AQAOOF6
 - iTunes (pro: cheaper $14.99, con: only Apple devices)
 https://itunes.apple.com/us/book/casais-das-flores-e-do-corvo/id588378486
 - Barnes Noble (pro cheaper $14.99, con: NOOK format)
 http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/casais-das-flores-e-do-corvo-francisco-gomes/1114254163?ean=9789892034348
 - XinXii (pro: DRM-free PDF, con: most expensive $19.58)
 http://www.xinxii.com/pt/casais-das-flores-do-corvo-p-339506.html

I suggested this to him recently after I saw the website for the book
disappear from the web. I was informed that he had managed to sell all the
paper copies, and I asked him to consider keeping it 'alive' as an e-book.
Even though I own the paper version, I bought one e-book, because of one
important factor that the paper version lacks: the ability to do a
full-text search on the contents. Note that I know from having traveled to
Flores last year, that the new 'Museu das Lajes das Flores' still has paper
versions of this book to sell. They also have lots of other books on sale,
including the Familias das Flores from the same author (which I'd also like
 to see as an ebook).

I bought the XinXii version, as I prefer to have my e-books in a format
that I know I'll be able to open 20 years from now. If you decide to do the
same, please be responsible when sharing it in your family.. I'd like to
see the 'Famílias da Ilha das Flores (Vila das Lajes e freguesias da
Fazenda e do Lajedo)' book be re-published as an e-book one of these days,
and I don't see it happening if the author only sells one e-book copy.

 Best regards,

 João Ventura

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Bizarre...but is it true?

2014-04-25 Thread Tanya Smith
I found this in an academia paper cited below. pg. 7 talks about secondary
burial. I am wondering if the Beating of the Body was actually the beating
or patting of the dirt (earth) that covered the body at the secondary
burial. Just my two cents.

Secondary burial - In many small parterres (burial grounds) the corpses are
buried in ditches made in
the soil, and they are covered with earth at a depth of three or four
inches. The soil
that covers the corpses is left loose, and is not even beaten

This description was probably referred to funerary rites taking place
according to
the mechanisms of secondary burial. Dead bodies buried under small heaps of
loose
soil; corpses not yet decomposed that were recovered so that their clothes
could be
changed; finally, exhumation of partially decayed corpses aimed at
completing the
defleshing process within niches within the walls ...

mummification practices in the Kingdom of the two Sicilies', Mortality, 15:

Interesting study and research here.

So, Manny says his mom said what her aunt said this story. OK, so this
story is being retold and translated. That answers the WHO.

But WHEN did this aunt say this? It is something this aunt remembered
from the age of 5? A memory is always open to question. A childhood
memory seems more so. And this story is being retold.

HOW did this aunt know? Did she stand there and watch?

I don't know...beat the body brings an image to mind that a stick, bat,
meat clever, something was taken to the body to basically abuse it. To me,
it just doesn't seem right. Maybe it was a custom to that area? I thought
some type of acid (lime?) was used to aid decomposition. To beat a body (or
a piece of meat - which is muscle) is to tenderize it. But I don't have
any experience with beating a piece of meat and observing the composition
either. So I concur, maybe beat isn't the right word here, but what
would be the correct word? I'll have to ask some of the people at the hall.

The body that was dumped in the ocean - sounds like an isolated incident
 to me.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Any information regarding: Henrique Jose Rapozo de Amaral Spouse: Geronima Maria - Portugal

2014-04-02 Thread Tanya Smith
This is terrific. Thank you so much. I'm still in process of converting my
old PAF files to Roots magic. This site has been so helpful in gathering
information from my ancestors.

So this records are from Nossa Senhora das Candeias of Candelaria church?
I goggled that church building and it is beautiful, I need to do further
research of the building to see what has been restored, etc. I am so
excited to visit Candelaria and actually have a tangible connection between
my relatives.

So, the next question is where do I go to find more birth and death dates/
places of the parents and grandparents? How do you find records without
dates attached to names? My mind is spinning. Sorry, so excited with new
found info.

thanks to you and Cheri! I think I am becoming addicted to this work.
Can't concentrate at my job.not good ;0)

Mahalo to the both of you.,

Manoel, legitimate son of Henrique Jose Rapoza and Geronima Maria
naturaz Nossa Senhora das Candeias of Candelaria.

Paternal grandparents Thome' Rapoza de Amaral and Marianna de Jesus

Maternal grandparents Manoel Moreira and Anna Theresa

 Born 15 and baptized 24 September 1826

Padrinhos Manoel de Freitas and his wife Joaquina Eufrazia.

I am not sure of the exact translation of Naturaz. I think it is similar
to originally from but hopefully someone else will add on to this.

 Padrinhos are godparents.

On many of the baptismal records, if someone named is deceased at the
time of the record, the priest will write defunta. I did not see that in
this record. It could mean that all the grandparents were still alive at
this time, or it could be that the priest didn't record it. I add this
little bit because I found many family records before I learned this and
had to go back and re-read all of them.

 Your welcome,

 Erica B.

Maria Elena, since you now have a criteria for your genealogy program (you
like it in the cloud and being able to access it from anywhere), look into
 RootsMagic.

 http://www.rootsmagic.com/

The PAID version of RootsMagic (RM) has their RootsMagic To-Go feature.
 Their Web site says:

Take RootsMagic with you wherever you go! RootsMagic To-Go allows you to
copy the RootsMagic program and your data onto any simple USB flash drive
or removable drive. Take the drive to a computer, plug it in, and run
 RootsMagic directly from it.

It literally runs off your flash/USB/thumb/travel drive! So you can
always have your genealogy with you.

In addition, RootsMagic has a section on their site about PAF users
switching over. They are one of the sponsors for the Azores Genealogy
Conference, too. Bruce Buzbee, owner, donated a full, paid copy of RM as a
 door prize!

I too, visited the cemeteries on my first trip to the Azores and found
that, in my family, they did not have the money to put up markers or
purchase their plots. This means that after a few years, the graves are
recycled and the church again is the last place where an ancestor had a
mass said for them. Unfortunately, I also saw that a lot of the altars
have been redone as they age. So, that is another reason I used the
baptismal fonts as my connection to my ancestors.
Let me know when you receive the CD. Sometimes, things get lost in the
mail, just emails sometimes don't make it through the maze and get lost.
