Jesse,

I am not sure if I ever contacted you! I am just going through my gedmatch
list and you are one of my top matches. You match me on my moms side of
the family who has mainly Ribeira Quente ancestors.

Reach out to me if you want to compare trees.

I'm interested.

My dad's direct maternal line is a V.

The farthest I go back on my dad's direct maternal line is:

Barbara RAPOSO of Nordeste, Sao Miguel born before 1780

[AZORES-Genealogy] Rainha Santa Isabel connection to Joao Afonso das Grotas Fundas

2016-05-06 Thread manita.morgado
Hello my fellow Azorean genealogy researchers!

This is my story of how I discovered my connection to Rainha Santa Isabel.
Perhaps you're connected to her too?

The perfect audience for this blog post is newbies to Azorean genealogy
research. It's also a beautiful story of how interconnected we all are.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Census records for the Azores

Census records for the Azores.

Has anyone ever used such records for genealogical purposes?

Here's some basic information below but I want to be able to look at the actual
census records for my ancestors in São Miguel.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Alberto Profirio Botelho Arruda - Povoacao, São Miguel

2015-10-12 Thread manita.morgado
Attention to anyone that has ancestors from:

Povoacao, São Miguel born in the early 1800s. I suspect the Vila of Povoacao
and so Matriz Mãe de Deus church records but not necessarily.

Could you please look in your trees for:

*** Alberto Profirio Botelho Arruda ***

He was most likely born around 1810 to 1830 in Povoacao, São Miguel. He was
definitely buried in the Povoacao cemetery, Santa Barbara. I know as I saw his
tombstone a few weeks ago when I was there.

Thank you in advance for your help.

[AZORES-Genealogy] locating land records in order to get more informatioin on my family

2015-09-04 Thread manita.morgado
Yes, that title is correct ... LAND RECORDS

One of my goals for my upcoming trip to Sao Miguel is to *locate some land
records* with the *name of my paternal great grand mother who left lands to
her children*. Such is clearly indicated in her death record. She died in
1944. I know that *the land is located in outskirts of the Vila da
Povoacao. *My goal is to find those land records so that I can determine *HOW
she got those lands. *We believe her dad gave it to her as a gift, but I
heard from another family member that her and her husband purchased it and
that it was not a gift. I want to solve this mystery.

I am meeting someone there to help me navigate the system, but I want to
come prepared with all the information I could possible have to make that
visit as productive and successful as possible.

Does *anyone here on this list have any advise and/or ever had to do such
research for land records in order to gain more information on their family
members?*

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] João Afonso das Grotas Fundas

2015-09-01 Thread manita.morgado
I would like the answer to that question too!

I have a few questions:

1. What is the story?

I tried to read the section on him in "Familias Antigas Povoação" but my
Portuguese is limited. I only recognize words ...something about torture,
abandon, going to Rome to ask the Pope for forgiveness, walking to Santiago de
Compostela and building a hospital.

2. What is the controversy?

3. Is there further study being done on him? What other source records exist
on him?

4. Now that we have DNA testing. Is it possible now to prove who he was?

I'm completely fascinated.

5. Also. Where exactly if Grotas Fundas? I want to go visit this place when
I go to Sao Miguel next week.

Looking foward to any information you have on him.

Thank you!

[AZORES-Genealogy] RR book - Errors and Ommissions

2015-09-01 Thread manita.morgado
Good morning from Toronto,

I have a question about a possible omission in RR's book.

Here are the specifics:

My 4th great grandparents Rosa Maria Barbosa married Francisco Furtado in 1775,
Ponta Garca, Sao Miguel. The marriage record clearly states her parents as
Ciprianno do Rego and Antonia Barbosa of Vila Franca who married in 1745.

Ciprianno and Antonia are in RR's book and can be found in Cap. 240, section
2-6. Only 4 kids are listed and their daughter Rosa Maria Barbosa is not in
RR's book.

There are two possibilities here:

1. There is an omission in RR's book

2. I have the wrong parents for Rosa Maria Barbosa. I only found her marriage
record that has the correct parents names but didn't find her birth record. I
definitely need to put more energy to finding it to prove via another document
that this is indeed her parents in RR's book.

I suppose a third possibility is the another couple with the same names, dates
and places but that's hard to believe.

This is my question:

Is there a list somewhere of verified and confirmed omissions and errors in
RR's book?

Also, is there anyone else on this list with the same ancestor? If it's
confirmed that Rosa Maria Barbosa parents are indeed Ciprianno Rego and Antonia
Barbosa then the line leads to Joao Afonso das Grotas Fundas which is an entire
separate post in and of itself.

Thank you in advance for your help.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Bookstores in Sao Miguel

2015-08-31 Thread manita.morgado
2 weeks from today I will be in Ponta Delgada looking for genealogy books! I
am interested in purchasing an original copy of RR's book for example.
Assuming it's affordable as I'm running out of cash with all the DNA testing
I've been doing.

What other books are worth purchasing?

And finally ...where are these special bookstores? Google couldn't find them
but I'm sure there are a few of you that can point me in the right direction.

Thank you :)

[AZORES-Genealogy] An original settler of Sao Miguel in RR's book

2015-08-30 Thread manita.morgado
Hello,

Here is a question for those of you who have been able to research as far back
to an original settler of Sao Miguel. I have a few branches on my tree where I
have an original settler by way of connecting my ancestors to RR's book on Sao
Miguel.

How do you now take the leap from Sao Miguel, Azores to the mainland?

What do I need to do? What advice would you give?

Now having said all that, because I have connected to the original settlers via
RR's book, it begs another question that may negate my question above to a
certain extent: because we know some of the original settlers via RR's book, I
would suspect that the research of figuring out where those people came from
before arriving in Sao Miguel has already been done. No? How does one go
about finding the records prior to arriving in Sao Miguel?

Looking forward to your guidance and thoughts on this.

Thank you!
