I have another one!

I found the husband of a first cousin twice removed listed in the Pescadero
records stating that he was from Topo, Sao Jorge. I found his baptism in
the archives and from that I know the names of his parents and
grandparents. Although he is not my blood relation, there are descendants
of his (and his wife who is my relation) with family trees on Ancestry.

I tried to contact them several years ago but did not get a reply. They
even linked to some family photos I uploaded without contacting me.

Oh well. I'm hoping this information will be useful to them anyway--if
Ancestry gives them the "hint".

More fun from these records! Someone I am researching has the middle
initial "C". On his draft registration he used the not very Portuguese
middle name of "Casey". Though he was born in California, both his parents
are Portuguese. No Irish in his ancestry. :)

His UPEC record lists his middle name as "Casaco" which makes a lot more
sense. It also lists a wife's name and I did not know about that
marriage and haven't found anything else about her yet.

I'm sure there is more treasure to be unearthed.

Yes, what Rosemarie says is so true! It appears that often the books were
copied over at certain times. So look at all copies of the books as you never
know what you will find. In one book, the secretary, or whoever made the entry
may only give an island….but in another there may be more information, a
village possibly! Through these books, you can see life events for some
members….they marry, their wives may pass away, and these changes will be
reflected in the beneficiaries. So good advice from Rosemarie…..read though all
the pages of your council…you will find brothers, fathers etc…..just don’t zero
in on the one person that you are looking for.

out the oldest book. Often the men who joined were single when they joined.
They gave their Mother as beneficiary and then when they married they

For the last several years, Susan Vargas Murphy and I have been digitally
copying the UPEC membership records that have been filmed by the Family History
Library. In the past, I have offered to do lookups from the records I have but
that won’t be necessary any longer. I have put these records into my Dropbox
and the links are on this page as shareable files:
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~azrwgw/research-aids-a---l/fraternal-societies/upec-records.html
You do NOT have to have a Dropbox account in order to see these records. You
can view them or download them to your own Dropbox (if you have one) or to your
computer.
Good luck and happy hunting!

2016-10-09 Thread 'looking4roots' via Azores Genealogy
Hi Kathy and Susan,

What a treasure to have at our finger tips!!!

Kathy, you were kind enough to look up my great uncle's info years ago. That
opened a few doors. Thanks again for your help.

For some time, I have been looking for more info on my paternal great uncles.
I will need to do a bit more investigating, but I think I discovered my 2nd
great grandmother's name, as well as my great uncle's wife, in the Pleasanton
records. I am so excited. More paths to follow!

Thanks for your time and efforts on everyone's behalf.

2016-10-08 Thread Mary Bordi
Thank you so much! I am interested in the history of my particular area as
well as my genealogy. There are so many familiar names from Pescadero and
Half Moon Bay.

It's interesting that some bookkeepers only wrote Açores, some just the
island and some the village. My great grandfather was one with just
"Açores" but no matter--I know where he was from. On the other hand the
husband of my grandmother's cousin is listed by village and
island--something I did not know!

And there are quite a few non Portuguese listed, too. And I'm not done
looking, either!

Vey very interesting!

You’re very welcome _??? I couldn’t help but notice that you didn’t sign
your name to your post and there doesn’t seem to be a way to respond to you by
name. If your purpose is to do genealogy research, you may want to rectify that
so that folks can respond to your posts properly. Just my thoughts.

And before anyone asks...The UPEC is now defunct. They merged a few years
ago and they are under the umbrella of PFSA. That stands for the Portuguese

OK, I'll say it again, in a different way
UPEC
U= Uniao (Untied)
P= Portuguesa (Portuguese)
(of the - not part of the acronyn)
E= Estado (State)
(of - not part of the acronym)
C= California

Uniao Portuguese da Estado de California (United Portuguese of the State of
California). UPEC. Take the capital letter of each of the Portuguese words
and there you go.

It's like a Portuguese fraternal society.

UPEC for those who don't knowUniao Portuguesa da Estada de California
(United Portuguese of the State of California). It's a Portuguese fraternal
society, kinda like the Moose lodge, Elks, Lions, etc.
