2012-06-22 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
I use Priceline.com to scout out prices and then go right to the airline
site to get the tickets. It is easier dealing with the airline than
Priceline. Usually tickets are cheaper to Boston than Manchester unless you
are visiting in NH then Manchester is a great airport to get in and out of.

Marilyn, it may still be too soon to find deeply discounted airfares online
between the west and Boston -- assuming that you, like me, are willing to
accept restrictions in order to get the lowest possible price.

In general, the US airlines list their cheapest fares about 5-6 WEEKS BEFORE
departure date. However, I like to start "stalking" airfares about 10 weeks
before departure date so I have some notion of the market, although I know
that usually the price I'm willing to pay isn't available for about another
month. (I check Expedia, but there are other similar aggregator sites, as
well as a few airlines that aren't listed on any of them, e.g., Southwest).

In off-season (ca. October-April), SATA typically flies only between Boston
and Ponta Delgada, São Miguel, and only on Tuesdays and Fridays (except for
a smattering of extra flights around various major holidays), with Tuesday
fares generally a bit lower. However, domestic US fares to/from Boston tend
to be significantly lower on Tuesdays than Fridays, so substantial savings
on those might help you decide, if your schedule permits.

One smart move SATA has made lately is to schedule their return flight from
PDL to BOS for a few hours earlier than it used to, so that it's due to
arrive in late afternoon, allowing sufficient time for connecting passengers
to clear Customs, then make the next flight (previously, their flights
arrived so late that a continuing passenger had to spend the night in
Boston, and hotels there are pricey).

Don't hesitate to ask if you have further questions. Katharine.

Last week Southwest had a Fall sale (they usually post their sales every
Tuesday, I signed up on their site for notification) and I was able to get
a fare from Sacramento to Manchester NH (I'm sure it was probably the same
price or close to it for Boston) for the end of September 2012 for $306.80
RT. I like Southwest because if you have to cancel, they don't give you a
refund, unless you buy the senior fare, but they do give you a credit for
the amount and you have to use it one year from the date you made the
reservation, which is exactly what I did as I had a reservation to Salt
Lake to attend Cheri's conference which I had to cancel last minute so I
used these credits.

Marilyn, it may still be too soon to find deeply discounted airfares online
between the west and Boston -- assuming that you, like me, are willing to
accept restrictions in order to get the lowest possible price.

In general, the US airlines list their cheapest fares about *5-6 WEEKS
BEFORE* departure date. However, I like to start "stalking" airfares about
10 weeks before departure date so I have some notion of the market,
although I know that usually the price I'm willing to pay isn't available
for about another month. (I check Expedia, but there are other similar
aggregator sites, as well as a few airlines that aren't listed on any of
them, e.g., Southwest).

In off-season (ca. October-April), SATA typically flies only between Boston
and Ponta Delgada, São Miguel, and only on Tuesdays and Fridays (except for
a smattering of extra flights around various major holidays), with Tuesday
fares generally a bit lower. However, domestic US fares to/from Boston
tend to be significantly lower on Tuesdays than Fridays, so substantial
savings on those might help you decide, if your schedule permits.

One smart move SATA has made lately is to schedule their return flight from
PDL to BOS for a few hours earlier than it used to, so that it's due to
arrive in late afternoon, allowing sufficient time for connecting
passengers to clear Customs, then make the next flight (previously, their
flights arrived so late that a continuing passenger had to spend the night
in Boston, and hotels there are pricey).

We were in São Miguel, São Jorge and Terceira in late October-early
November one year, and the weather was lovely -- not as warm/muggy as
summer (which I don't like), but still mild, sort of like my beloved native
San Francisco Bay Area. It only seriously rained 1 day out of 10 (but hey,
that's what museums are for!), plus brief showers on a few other days, so
pack an umbrella and light jacket. Best of all, practically no other
tourists, so you can really get a feel for the place (it was my husband's
first time there), and tourist attractions aren't crowded.

Boa viagem! Katharine.
