"x" is an abbreviation for "ch." You'll also see "Paxeco" in some records
for Pacheco. I'm sure there are other examples as well.

I show the last name as being spelled Caxeta. Francisco Pereira Caxeta is a
child of Manuel Pereira Caxeta and Maria Silveira and 45 years old.
(Manuel's mother's brother) This would make him Manuel's uncle. I have not
seen the name of Antonio Homem da Costa before. These mysterious names that
pop up!

Thank you Sam, Bill and Cheri for your help!

2019-02-07 Thread Leonor Bertoni
Hi,
Invoking the the parish saint (for my town, it was Nossa Senhora do
Rosario) was common practice back then. Normally, they just referred to her
as "Nossa Senhora". Someone needed to represent Nossa Senhora and it was
normally the Sacristan or someone chosen by the family.

Yes, they invoke the Virgin Mary (Nossa Senhora or Our Lady) by someone
touching the crown. It was typically done before the 3rd time period, but I
still see it here and there in the 3rd time period records.

After the godfather, which as Sam said is Antonio Homem da Costa (who is
single), it is mostly the normal church script as Cheri said. I think the
confusing part is that they did not name a godmother. Instead it says that
for Madrinha they invoked Nossa Senhora touching the crown of the statue
and it names Francisco Pereira Cachete (a married stonemason). I assume he
must the one that did the invocation or is named as a witness to it. I am
not familiar with this practice.

My translation might not be exact but I hope it gets the gist of it.

David L,

Can you specify what parts? After the godparents, it's the usual church
language about that the baptism was read back and everyone verified it was
true and the baptism was drawn up in duplicate (one set for the church and
one for the Diocese/Vatican or wherever it goes), and the witnesses or
godparents sign.
