I have a Luis Souza’s son change his Surname to Luiz/Luis in the mid 1800s
on São Miguel.  From the Ponta Delgada area of San Miguel in the town of
São Roque  ( I believe the town was previously called something else). The
Souzas went back generations there.

Lillian,
You really  need to do a lot more searching in the USA records to find the
original village. As Cheri has said before, there are 26 Concelhos on Sao
Miguel to try looking! She will be looking for de Souza or in this country
probably just Sousa with an 's' with no 'de'. Bettencourt is also de in the
Islands or just plain Bettencourt.

Mariana Josefa de Bettencourt (3rd & 4th cousins, mrd  5 Nov 1832, NG) so

[AZORES-Genealogy] Bettencourt, Norte Grande, Santo Antonio, S Jorge

['Gerri Martin' via Azores Genealogy]

My second great grandparents were Manuel Jose de Bettencourt and Ana 
Severina Baptista married in 1856 in Norte Grande. I have Baptism record of 
one child Victoria Soares de Bettencourt born Feb 18, 1861 in Santo 
Antonio. my great grandmother. 

Currently searching through CCA looking for other siblings to make a cousin 
connection. Just curious if anyone has these names in their family tree.

I wouldn't rely on the census for correct spelling. If the person being
interviewed was illiterate they may not have known how to spell their name.
Then it was up to the census taker to sound it out, sometimes from a heavy
accent! Even the records in the Azores have different spellings for some
names in different eras. I have most often seen it spelled Bettencourt here
in California. (My ancestors are from Sao Jorge and there is Bettencourt in
the family.)

Where did the Bettencourt you are looking for settle in the US? East or
West coast or somewhere in between? I would pretty much bet they were from
the Azores.

with my progress. Last known data ends with my great great grandfather:
Manuel Jose deBettencourt b. MAY 13 1826 m. Anna Josquina b. June 15 1834
Sao Jose... hoping to find connection one day and fill more gaps. All the
