Thank you Hermano and Margaret! I guess my next question would be does "veteran of the front line troops" mean anything special or is it a generic line for most soldiers? I've read many of the obitos in Maia from 1860-1884ish and this is the first time I've seen this notation. I think that you have mostly "tropa de linha", iine soldier. According to what you have said he must have had a military carreer or at least he served his full term.
