It was Joao Brum Santos Macedo, which is the name shown as father on my
grandfather's birth record. The change was to Joao Brum. The Santos was not
used by his ancestors but was for at least 2 of his children. Now I'm
wondering if that note is on all his children's records. Always something more
to do!

This is the first time I have seen this. It is possible that the priest made a
mistake when writing that record and changed the father's name. Later he needed
to mend this and went to Court.

An example: my paternal grandmother is Emília Cândida Gaspar. On my father's
birth record his mother is listed as Maria da Conceição, who actually is his
paternal grandmother. If this would be an issue, we would need to mend his
birth record.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Name change

2015-02-06 Thread Eddie Machado
Hi,

I have been researching my paternal side of my family Machado or in the
Azores d'Azevedo Machado. I have found all the birth records for my great
grandfather and his brothers and I have found 5 of the 9 in the united
states. I have run into on the obit for my 2x great grandmother Maria
Borba in 1913 that two of the sons may have taken either their mothers last
name or their step fathers last name which in this case is the same
Borba. On another brother's obit in 1930 for Anton Machado it lists one
of the brothers again as Borba, but when I get to the final brother to
pass Michael Machado the obit it lists the two brothers that were
previously labeled Borba now as Machado. I have attached each of those
obits to this post. In this case it is Jose/Joseph Borba/Machado and John
Borba/Machado. How common is this? Makes it difficult to find people I must
say.

I have a great grandfather who was Jose (or Joseph) Azevedo Machado. He
was born Feb. 25, 1871 in Calheta, Sao Jorge island, Azores and died Nov.
5, 1944 in Gustine, Merced County, California, USA. He had an older brother
named Manuel Azevedo Machado who also lived in Gustine. I couldn't find any
Borbas in his relatives, just Silveirias and Texeiras. Do you think there
 might be a connection?

 Hi,

I have been researching my paternal side of my family Machado or in
the Azores d'Azevedo Machado. I have found all the birth records for my
great grandfather and his brothers and I have found 5 of the 9 in the
united states. I have run into on the obit for my 2x great grandmother
Maria Borba in 1913 that two of the sons may have taken either their
mothers last name or their step fathers last name which in this case is the
same Borba. On another brother's obit in 1930 for Anton Machado it lists
one of the brothers again as Borba, but when I get to the final brother
to pass Michael Machado the obit it lists the two brothers that were
previously labeled Borba now as Machado. I have attached each of those
obits to this post. In this case it is Jose/Joseph Borba/Machado and John
Borba/Machado. How common is this? Makes it difficult to find people I must
 say.

my husband's grandfather was born at Pico . his name was Antonio Joaquim
 Vieira.
He applied for a passport in 1870 and used the name Antonio Vieira Fogaca. We
visited the Islands in 1985. No one on any of the islands knew any one named
Fogaca. Does any on e on the list know of any one using that name.
