RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Family Nicknames
Researching in Terceira just now and was reminded of your Canhoto nickname.I have 8 people using that as a surname, most from Terceira and ranging from the 1500s to 1800s.There are Fernandes Canhoto, Gomes Canhoto, Cardoso Canhoto, Machado Canhoto and Vieira Canhoto.I'm sure you know, but some might not realize that a great many surnames today started as a nickname.Even Furtado, for instance. To an English speaker, it's often funny to translate surnames. It's not Portuguese, but just tonight we were having salad with bacon bits and my in-laws from Slovakia were saying the word "slanin" and so I asked my son if he knew what that means and he says "bacon." So then I asked does he realize he has ancestors named Slanin? And he just laughed, but it's true. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Family Nicknames
Nancy, Interesting that you also have the alcunha Bonito in your family, who knows could be a connection. I am convinced that Pico received settlers from Sao Miguel not during the initial settlement process but probably 100-150 years later when they began developing their vineyards. One of the strangest alcunhas that I have heard is Bolor which means mold. RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Family Nicknames
Antonio,We have "cebola branca" (white onion) referring to their head of hair from Angra.I found it interesting what you wrote about the Lajes do Pico families. On my first trip to find cousins in Piedade, Pico, I asked around for anyone using the "Leal da Rosa" surname combo and got that blank look from just about everyone. But one person thought there was a person he knew with that surname, but called Jose Serafim. He was right because first of all, Serafim is not that common so is a great choice to use as alcunha, and second it comes from his grandfather named Serafim Leal da Rosa. So I found him and many relatives. Showed me their wine-making, ate the fish they just caught for dinner. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Family Nicknames
Antonio, my Couto line, from Arrifes and Sao Roque, Sao Miguel, has Bonito for an alcunha, and I've seen it in church records and on passenger lists. I've seen other families with the alcunha Feio, so I guess my family was lucky. My maternal grandmother's Frias family from Lagoa, Sao Miguel, has the alcunha Malassada. Another branch of my family was called Pingao. I'm remembering this from many, many years ago. I was told the word meant squash, but my dictionary suggests that it means a very large drop. I suppose a squash resembles a very large drop. Have you ever come across Pingao? Nancy On Fri, Sep 19, 2014 at 10:45 PM, Cheri Mello wrote: > I have Viola as an alcunha. I've been working on a Pimentel family from Flores. For a few generations the were Pimentel Belo. Belo = beautiful. Then the next generation is Pimentel Canhoto. Canhoto means left-handed, but also, like the French word gauche, also clumsy, coarse, awkward. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Family Nicknames
Hi Anthony, I can't speak for every place in the Azores but I can speak to you about the use of alcunhas in Lajes do Pico. My father frequently talks about people from the old country he lived there until his early 30's and usually refers them by their alcunha seldom by their surname most families were known by an alcunha and they were usually passed down along the paternal line just like a surname in the United States, surnames however were inconsistently passed down. Surnames are even today seldom used in everyday conversation I suspect due to so many people sharing common surnames. If you walked into a village and asked for Manuel Cardoso most people wouldn't have any idea who you were talking about even though that may be that person's official surname, But if you asked for Manuel Melao(Melon) or Manuel Pombo(Pigeon) someone would figure out who you were talking about. Interestingly those are actual alcunhas for two different Cardoso lines. I've looked at the information from the Rol dos Confesados for 1883(This information was collected by the parish priest and documents all those of age to confess by household) and found some interesting alcunhas for some of mine and my wife's line's. Some I am able to translate, two are also used as surnames by some families Bonito(Handsome) and Craveiro others I found are Touro(Bull), Toucinho(bacon), Caipiras(Countrified, the American version I think would be Redneck), Zarigo, Burrinha(Donkey), Carocha(Bug), Zidro, Pe de Galinha(Chicken Foot, very interesting!) I have also noticed that some of my lines didn't have alcunhas recorded for some reason especially the one's that owned more property. I'm curious if anyone else would care to share their families alcunhas. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Family Nicknames
They were used pretty much like we use nicknames today; find a word that describes someone, and, attach it. Perhaps a woman named Maria was very adept at growing flowers - she particularly loved the scent of carnations, she became Maria das Cravos; or, a man named Joao liked working in the Orange groves, he became Joao das Laranjeiras - it was anything that could be used to identify a person from others in a community. Thank you for the clarification Dano. I'm assuming the 'alcunhas' would have some type of significance to the family, but is there a certain rhyme or reason for how it's chosen? Can the alcunhas be something other than a surname? I'm not familiar with this custom, so it is a little strange to me. Although, there are multiple reasons for using "alcunhas," or nicknames, they are often used to identify members of a certain family that may have a very common name surname in a particular area. As for the examples you say that you've come across, they appear to be corruptions of legitimate surname - one, in particular, resembles the very old spelling for the surname Rebello (Rebelo, Rabola, Rabella, etc).
