[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Help reading a name
Thanks, everyone. It is indeed dos Reis... I found the marriage record and baptism records of the children with corresponding dates. I don't see a "São" there. I think it is "dos Reis" but written as "do S Reis" if that makes any sense. Wow, it makes all the difference in the world. I was looking for Regina daughter of Francisco Camillo and Maria Da Gloria. The mother of Francisco being Maria Espirito Santo and the parents of Maria da Gloria be Maneul Machado and Isabel Josefa. Francisco Camillo from Village of Praia, Island of Graciosa Looks like I missed by a long shot on this one. Thanks to all for the help. My grandfather was born in Conceicao back in 1889, I think. His name was Manuel Joaquim Leal da Rocha Homem (changed to Manuel Rocha Holmes). If Angelina is your ancestor, then we are very distantly related. I think the most recent connection is from the late 1500s. I have traced her ancestors way back. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Help reading a name
Doug, In re-reading the document again, I think I have to disagree. The name of the child is Regina. I found a birth record for another child and it makes Regina's make sense now. Francisco José Dutra Camillo, fisherman, born in the parish of Matriz de São Matheus of Villa da Praia, Graciosa Island, and of Maria da Gloria, domestic labor, born in this Parish of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, where they were married and are parishioners, living in Rua do Castellinho. Granddaughter, on the father’s side, of unknown grandfather, and Maria do Espírito Santo; and on the mother’s side of Manoel Machado, deceased, and Isabel Josefa. Now I just need to understand where the Jose Dutra is coming from. It is only in these 2 birth records that this name is used. He was born on 4 Nov 1865 in Sao Matheus, Praia, Graciosa and baptized on 5 Nov 1865. His mother is listed as Maria do Espirito Santo, and she is a native of Santa Barbara (Ribeiras), Pico. The father is listed as unknown. Maternal grandparents are listed as Jose Pereira and Maria do Espirito Santo. They are natives of Santa Barbara (Ribeiras), Pico. I am attaching the baptismal record I made a copy of at the Family History Center. You can find more info going back on the maternal grandparents Jose Pereira and Maria do Espirito Santo on the University of Minho website in the Lajes do Pico, Ribeiras section. http://www.ghp.ics.uminho.pt/geneweb/gwd.exe?b=Ribeiras;lang=en;p=jose;n=pereira;oc=2 On the website link, the mother of Francisco Jose Dutra is presumably the youngest child of Jose Pereira and Maria do Espirito Santo, born 25 Jan 1820. Hope this info helps, and let me know if you have any other questions.
