Hi Walt, I believe that all of the films are now on-site. We will check
though before we go in Sept. to make sure. It's good that we have the CCA
and also the continent records available online too. Good luck on your
searching, you really are doing very well! We'll miss you this year at the
Conference!

Rosemary - I don't know if it still this way or not, but a number of years
ago I went to the SLC FHC to review records from Portugal (not sure if it
was for the Azores or the Continent) and they were not present at the
library. They were in the granite mountain vault and it would take 3-4
days to get them to the library. I would suggest that if one is planning
to look at certain films, they look on-line, or call the library, to make
sure that they are physically there. This would tend to alleviate
disappointment.

Also, thanks for your encouragement and help with the translations.

took her back into Portugal/Spain/France!

No, Nancy, you have to order it. I was hoping that it would be digitized
already but it's not. I have it here in my FHC and it may be in other
places but I don't think it's in Arkansas!! One of the good things about
going to SLC it that all the films are at our fingertips, which helps
sometimes. If I'm having a hard time reading something on the CCA I can
always go to the film and sometimes it's easier to see that way!
I think that there is another Sao Jorge genealogy that they've taken of the
site. The index looked different in the back, not like the one I told you
about. Darn, I wish I knew the name of it!

Okay, here is the site:
http://www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt/bd/pesquisa/default.aspx?cat=1
It's the one on the right by Mateus Machado Fagundes de Azevedo. There is
an index in the back, so check there for the name. Let me know if you need
any help. I think it's pretty straight forward though, it looks like a
Pedigree Chart.

Just FYI, the Sao Joao manuscript is also on one of the microfilms that SLC
has of our Azorean records. It's on one of the Sao Jorge ones. If you have
the microfilm at your local FHC, you can look at it that way too. I've
written to Cheri and she will send me the shortcut when she gets home from
tutoring. I am going to work at my volunteer job @9am until 3:30 or so. I
will email you after that sometime.

Hi Nancy Jean, I don't connect as far as I know. The trouble is you get to
the end of the line in Norte Grande and you can'tconnect because the
records are just missing! So frustrating! As to where I saw his name, I
think it's in the unpublished manuscripts section of the CCA. I'll have to
ask Cheri for the shortcut she made to the site because I can never get
there by myself! I think it's under Biblioteca Digital. I'll email Cheri.
Anyway, there are about 5 unpublished manuscripts written in the 17 &
1800's by priests when there were still record books to use and maybe oral
histories. Two for Sao Jorge, a couple for Terceira and one for Graciosa.

Well, if the son-in-law was good for his daughter, then the sister would be
good for him? I had a widowed man marry his widowed mother-in-law. His wife
died in childbirth. He needed someone to help with the kids, so he married
their grandmother!

Thank you so much! I just wasn't sure of what I was seeing! I sure wish they
put the ages in the records during this time. Between the name changes and the
marriages within families it's very difficult to know who's who! I still have
no idea why Antonio Abreu/ spelled Habreu on his marriage, would take part of
his wife's father's name, de Quadros. Why not his full name of de Quadros
Pereira? Yikes!

I've never seen a record where a man married his son-in-laws sister!

Also, thank you for posting the links and the suggestion to look for Maria
Bernarda's obit. This is my direct maternal line and Maria Bernarda's records
are very illusive. I'd love to be able to trace her line back further.my Mt
full sequence is H3b with 5 extra mutations and within the Iberian Ashkenazi Mt
DNA Project at FTDNA our H3b is flagged as "likely Sephardic"and I have no
close matches at allonly 1 and she's a genetic distance of 3no clues
there.

Best regards,

Nancy Jean

Here is what I think I see, along with links to the records:

27 Nov 1794, Velas

Joao Jose da Silveira, son of Antonio Alvares de Quadros and Joanna Maria,
native and parishioner of Velas

Anna Bernarda Poderoza, daughter of Joao Ignacio da Souza and Maria Bernarda
Poderoza, native of Norte Grande and parishioner of Velas

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SJR-VL-VELAS-C-1788-1806/SJR-VL-VELAS-C-1788-1806_item1/P37.html

Month? Day? 1797 (presumably between 17 Sep and 5 Nov 1797), Velas

Joao Ignacio de Souza?, son of Joao de Souza? Machado and Tereza? Maria de
Jesus, widower of Maria Bernarda Poderoza, native of Velas and parishioner of
Norte Grande.

Joanna? Maciel Alvares, daughter of Antonio Alvares de Quadros and Joanna Maria
da Silveira, native and parishioner of Velas

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SJR-VL-VELAS-C-1788-1806/SJR-VL-VELAS-C-1788-1806_item1/P54.html

It appears to me that the father of the bride in the first marriage is the same
as the groom in the second marriage. Since Anna Bernarda's marriage does list
her mother as defuncta (deceased), perhaps she died between 1794 and 1797
(possibly in Norte Grande).

It also appears to me that the parents of the groom in the first marriage are
the same as the parents of the bride in the second marriage. If so, then you
are correct that he married his son-in-law's sister.
