2014-10-11 Thread linda
I thought I had replied to this post, but my internet connection often
fails for a few seconds and it may not have gone through.

First, I apologize that that my list of ancestors was posted to the board
rather than sent privately to Joao; I replied from email and didn't notice
that the reply address had defaulted to the entire Azores Genealogy group.
I'm slowly getting the hang of this message board-- thanks for bearing with
me.

Yes, *Tenente* Ignacio Vicente de Mendonca. His first wife, Maria de
Jesus, had an unusual and very poignant obit. I can post a link and my
tentative transcription if there's interest. His second wife, also Maria
de Jesus, was my ancestor. Over 40 years, he fathered about 15 children
divided almost evenly between both wives.

Many thanks for the DNA info. It's now on my to-do list.

Vicente de Mendonca. He's the tenente?

 Linda M,

You should consider getting your DNA tested. The Azores DNA project is
with Family Tree DNA. They will have a sale at the end of the year, in
December. The Family Finder test is regularly $99 + $10 shipping (USD).
It has gone on sale for $79 in past sales. Don't know what they will do
with it for the Holiday Sale at the end of the year. You'll match the
Duarte sisters (not on this list), Bob Luis and the people he's tested, and
Eric Edgar. There will be other Flores people too that you will match.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: an introduction and a thank you

2014-10-09 Thread João Ventura
Hi Linda,

In the spirit of sharing, feel free to browse the people I have from Cedros
in my
database:
http://venturas.org/familytree/placelist.php?parent%5B%5D=Portugalparent%5B%5D=A%C3%A7oresparent%5B%5D=Floresparent%5B%5D=Santa%20Cruz%20das%20Floresparent%5B%5D=Cedrosged=venturas

I've been adding people that are related to my wife's family in some
manner, so it's possible that depending on the individual they may or not
tie up into my wife's ancestors. If they do, I'll probably have researched
all I can about that person.

 Hi Everyone,

My name is Linda, and all my antecedents are from the Azores. I've always
had an interest in my family history, and I had thought that someday it
would be fun to tackle the project of expanding my family tree. About two
months ago while I was idly googling this and that, I discovered that the
Islands' parish records are now online. I found my grandparents' baptismal
records, and that was it-- I was completely hooked on chasing down the rest
of the family as far back as I can.

It's been great fun. I read a little Portuguese, enjoy history and
puzzles, and have a research background, so the learning curve hasn't been
too bad-- though I'm certainly finding that deciphering the handwriting on
some records can be challenging to say the least!

I knew that my family migrated to California from Terceira (Villa de Praia
and Santa Barbara) and Flores (Santa Cruz and Cedros mainly), but I was
surprised to discover that Santa Maria figures prominently in my family
history too. It looks like I also have a connection to Faial though I
 haven't pursued it yet.

So far, I've done a little of the Villa de Praia line (back to about 1800)
and most of the Cedros line (though with gaps).

At the moment, I'm concentrating on Santa Maria and have got back to circa
1710, mostly via the marriage records. I'm currently working on the
records from the Matriz de NS de Assuncao, and then will tackle Sao Pedro
and Santo Espirito. So far, this branch of my family is packed full of
Resendes, with a few Curvelos, an Almada, a Cabral and a couple of
 Figueiredos and Souzas.

Finally, a huge thank you to everyone in this group. I've been reading
old posts, and the information they contain has been extremely helpful. I
really wish I'd known about the Flores marriage book before trying to slog
through the Cedros records (agh!), but it will certainly be useful when I
return to working on the relations from that island. I've also read the
posts on software recommendations, and I appreciate all the various points
that were suggested for consideration. At the moment, I'm working with
paper and pencil, but I definitely see the need for a database. Trying out
a couple of the programs is one of my next priorities.

I expect that I will be asking for help with decipherment and nuance. As
my skills improve, I hope I'll be able to contribute back to the group too,

for now, back to reading baptisms,

 Linda

2014-10-09 Thread linda meneses
Hi João,

Thanks so much for your note and the link to your relations. It's a
pleasure to make your (virtual) acquaintance. I think that it's highly
likely that we share a common ancestor just beyond the available
documentation.

Here are my earliest Cedros ancestors; they all share surnames with yours:

Manoel Pimentel Nunes

   - born c. 1760, roughly estimating from a grandchild's baptismal record
   - Married to Maria da Trindade
   - daughter = Catharina Pimentel (no record; I would check her madrinha
   if I could)

Alexandre Rodrigues

   - born c. 1745, calculated from his obit
   - died 12 Dec 1815
   - married to Marianna de Jesus

Manoel Ignacio da Silveira

   - born c. 1770, assuming he was 30 when a daughter was born and the age
   on her obit was correct
   - married to Maria Ursula

Capitão João Ignacio da Mendonca

   - born c. 1755, assuming he was in his 30's when his son Ignacio was
born and the age on Ignacio's obit was correct
   - married to Maria Roza
   - son = Ten. Ignacio Vicente de Mendonca

Caetano Pimentel de Mendonca

   - born 1770, roughly estimating from a grandchild's baptismal record
   - married to Maria dos Santos
   - daughter = Maria de Jesus dos Santos, the second wife of Ignacio
   Vicente de Mendonca

I would guess that we share a common Mendonca ancestor and perhaps one or
more of the others as well.

I noticed a strong trend in my family's Cedros records for the men to marry
when in their 30's and to marry women about 10 to 15 years younger than
themselves. So, when estimating birth dates in Cedros, I used that as a
general assumption.
many thanks again for your note,

Linda
