not translating it to find out it's not your Francisco.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Translation please

2015-06-18 Thread Cheri Mello
OK, the Passaportes leaving the Azores.

The Passaportes are from the 3 ports of Ponta Delgada on Sao Miguel island,
Angra on Terceira island, and Horta on Faial island. It does not mean that
a person was from that island just because that is the port they sailed out
of. Think of it like going on a cruise now. You are from _ and your
cruise ship is leaving from Vancouver, British Columbia. Are you from there
just because the ship is leaving there? No, you are not. So it's the same
with the Passaportes.

The Passaportes will vary with the information that they contain and they
vary from port to port too. You hope for a Passaporte with the most
information. The ones you are looking at are not listing the parents, but
do list the place of birth. One link you provided says the guy was born in
Faial and the other says Pico. Many Pico people left from the port of Horta
on Faial.

Francisco Ignacio is such a common name though. You first said he is
from Faial and this says Pico. Do you know which island for sure? I can't
 remember.

Pat,

What is this and where did you get it? It's in Latin, not Portuguese. And
which record are you referring to? The one with the 1875, Oct 14 date?

Looks like the marriage of Joseph F, native of the Azores, (son of?) Joseph
F. Rose and Francisca (Jacinta) with Flora (can't tell if that's an M after
her name), native of Faial (Azores), (daughter of?) Joseph Vargas and
Francisca (Ludovina) and the witnesses were Joanna B. Silva and and Maria
B. Silva. By Joannes F. Cassidy, Pastor

Joseph is Latin for Jose of course.

I didn't study Latin, so this is my best guess.

Pat and Cheri,

This looks very much like the records that I have looked at in the archives in
Menlo Park on microfilm thereis this from Mission San Jose? If not, they
are just like this. The priests did them in Latin and sometimes they almost
seem to make up names that they don't know how to translate. Knowing what we do
about Portuguese women's names, I bet that Ludovina is probably Luiza/Luisa.
You did a good job with no Latin Cheri
Usually the records that I looked at had the names in the sidebar also

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Translation please

2015-05-04 Thread 'Pat Rose' via Azores Genealogy
Hi Susan,
I know I worked with you in the past and it might very well have been on this
same record.  And you are right, the record did come from St. Patrick's
seminary in Menlo Park.  The day I was there the Father visiting was kind
enough to take pictures of the records I found as I hadn't thought to take a
camera with me.  He then emailed me the pictures about a week later.I changed
computers and lost my emails from you so I'm starting from scratch again.  I'd
love it if you would send me your email address again.  Mine is
rosebuds...@sbbmail.com .
I have recently been in touch with Michelle LeVeira Flores, also on this group,
and Harold Rose, and we're pretty sure the three of us are related at some
level.  Got some great pictures of Flora, her daughter, and some of Michelle's
other relatives and it ties into Harold's records as well.  It's been a lot of
fun and once the three of us have time to sit down and go over more of our
information we'll probably get together to see how it all fits together.I did
get some Latin translations for ex=from, et= and, and that natum=born but it's
back to what were the names and what did they get translated from before they
came to America.
Thanks,
Pat Rose

This looks very much like the records that I have looked at in the archives in
Menlo Park on microfilm thereis this from Mission San Jose? If not, they
are just like this.  The priests did them in Latin and sometimes they almost
seem to make up names that they don't know how to translate. Knowing what we do
about Portuguese women's names, I bet that Ludovina is probably Luiza/Luisa.
You did a good job with no Latin CheriUsually the records that I looked at

That is what I see. It appears the priest wrote only the first name of the
groom and bride as the custom that they took the fathers family name which
follows. The bride’s name is spelled Floram which is Latin for Flora.

The “ex” means from so the priest wrote Joseph F native of Azores ex (meaning
coming from) Joseph F. Rose and Francisca Jacinta.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Translation please.

2012-05-28 Thread Cheri Mello
Leonard,
I don't do so well with newspaper articles, but I can get the gist of it.
Others will clarify more.

Charles N. Silva
He died yesterday, at his residence,
316 Hawthron Street, after
a prolonged illness, Mr. Charles
N. Silva, pharmacist, that
had established at
corner of the streets Pleasant and
Spring (I think it says he was the corner druggist at Pleasant Spring).

Something...he was a native of this city
something 38 years of
age.

On 9 Jan in 1922 he married
with Miss Mary C. Rogers.
He belonged to the Masons.

His funeral will be
on Sunday at 2:30 in the afternoon
something Wilson, at the corner of the
streets County and Elm.
Central Catholic Portuguese.
(Guess that's the church).

I am getting better at this already! This is my gr grandmother's brother. I
found the record myself!! Yipp! I can read the 20th day of November 1892
church of Sao Mateus do Calheta, Angra do Heroismo, Father is Jose daCosta
mother is Emilia Augusta residing in Canada do Biscoitiho. Joaquim daCosta and
Luiza Candida are paternal grandparents and Jose Periera Gil and Theodora
Joaquina are maternal grandparents.

How can Jose Periera Gil also be a godparent? Anna deJesus is godmother. Can
you tell me if it shows Manoel's birthdate? Please tell me what I have missed
or gotten wrong. I appreciate any assistance.

I went through 1890, 1891 and 1892 looking for siblings. Siblings are:
Virgina, Matthew, Victorina, Amelia and Maria. My eyes must be getting tired I
didn't find them.

  Thank you!! Karen :)

2012-04-19 Thread Karen Huffman
This is the island of Terceira. Shirley thank you for replying with the
dates. I looked at it as the 14th as the baptism. The 28th is obvious after
you pointed it out!!
